Scary Final Glide with Rigid Wing Hang Glider

  • Final glide in a competition (Hessische Meisterschaft 2022 - Greifenburg/Austria - Task 3). I took a route over the Weißensee (lake) and therefor flew into the leeside of the ridge to the left of the lake. This decreased my glide ratio quite a bit. At the transition from the Weißensee valley to the Drau valley I got quite a bit lower then I'd liked.
    It would have been easy to get a little more height in the area of the beginning of this video. With the height I actually had, I should have aborted my flight and landed safely near the lake. All went well but next time I'm going to safe more height or land.
    The risk in flying depends heavily on one's decisions. Make the right ones...

    05:29 Getting Low
    06:03 The Scary Bit
    07:29 Off to the Landing Zone

    Love it....Could watch this all day...No fast forwarding...lets all enjoy every bit....Am just amazed at the glide ratio of these modern hang gliders! around 6mins in it was just cool watching you glide over the road so close! The odd thing was, when you were looking around a few times, it actually reminded me of a few videos I've seen when they attach cameras to eagles backs, it just reminded me of how the eagle does basically the same thing, flying (gliding) like a bird..amazing feeling...i envy you! Low, lower, lowest. No risk no fun. At minimum 2 areas are without any risk management.
    A little downwash and you would hang in the trees.
    But I am only one of the first 250 hang gliding pilots in Germany. Last flight I did with 66 years. I wish you all this wonderful years, but fly with a brain. Air can have surprising
    conditions, and a low level flight over long distance increase your risk not linear with distance.
    But.. up to you. And great to see. Very nice clip. Good luck!

Only thing ‘scary’ is that apparently, you went through a pass in the mountain range and onto the Lee side of the mountains for the final glide. I don’t see any tree movement so apparently, winds were light and/or variable this day. Fantastic video- thank you ♠️

  • @dkjens0705
    @dkjens0705 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    No doubt you're an excellent pilot with an excellent wing. Still, nobody can predict conditions 100% and that is the danger. All that had to happen during this final was you encountering a bit more sink and you would have had to land out. We've all had flights where we were fortunate things went well but could easily have gone less than well. You fessing up to your hairline decissions here and admitting next time will be different speaks oceans about your maturity.

    What kind of a tailwind did you have? Your ground speed was phenomenal and glide ratio easily 1 to 30 if not more. Was it really Lee side because it seemed tail wind all the way and for landing you turned 180 to face the wind :)

    • @HangmanMo
      @HangmanMo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The first 2 minutes of this video the wind comes from the left, facing the ridge I'm riding. It's a mixture of soaring and thermal updraft, therefor my glide ratio is very good. After that I transition to the other side of this ridge. This is, where my glide ratio gets below normal.
      At 07:10 you can see, that I'm entering another valley. The wind situation here is different and the wind is mainly from the right side of the valley.
      On final though, the wind is very light but straight from the right in the direction of flight.

Mostly I flew the Spirit- in that time. I did this for 1 or 2 seasons and started to fly the Aeros Combat. • @HangmanMo
      @HangmanMo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you've flown conventional gliders this is no comparison when it comes to glide ratio. It depends very much on the fuselage (my body) and how the pilot is positioned against the wind (angle of attack, slip, ...). In the end, truth is something between 1/14 - 1/18. The glide here was very good because of the line and the conditions, not the l/d. But it's so much fun 🙂.

    • @skypix777
      @skypix777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He’s not lying. This is a helpful and useful video that shows the possible consequences of giving into “gotta make the LZ”-itis.
      The one section above the pass where he’s just a few feet above a road and close-in tall trees shows poor judgment. One little pocket of sink right there and he has no chance to make a safe landing. He was lucky and he knows it. A good glider pilot never risks putting him/herself in a situation where they need to have everything work out perfectly or they’ll have a dangerous sudden landing or crash. The corollary problem with an event like this is when a pilot learns (erroneously) that close calls will always work out in their favor.
      Always give yourself margin in the air for that day when the unpredictable bites you in the butt.

    • @user-mv6zp1vb5j
      @user-mv6zp1vb5j ปีที่แล้ว

      @@skypix777 As a retired flexwing and rigid wing pilot of 32 year standing I agree totally with your review. Competition encourages pilots to take on higher risks than we would entertain when free flying for fun. My heart was in my mouth a few times whilst watching this video but the gods favoured the pilot on this day, assisted by the glide ratio of his Atos. I have witnessed one competition pilot fly into the lee of a mountain and got pushed right into the ground in less than a minute, he did not survive. I wish you all many safe landings.

    • @dudleymead1828
      @dudleymead1828 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately you have little context to compare this video to when you say it is not scary. Perhaps you compare it to wingsuit flying or paraglider malfunctions, but in the context of continuing a hang glider flight into regions where safe landings may be compromised, the scary part is that the pilot has to rely on slim margins to avoid the trees ... or worse. It is an excellent video and appropriately named for those pilots who understand the sport and the situation.
