    It's a good idea to carry firearm everywhere you go.I don't think I've ever went on a hike in the woods or a camping trip where I didn't carry a firearm. You may not need it but you definitely don't want to be the person that needs it and it's sitting in the truck or at home.

    Always carry. not only bear, but big cats depending on where you are and also people. Deep woods are perfect for people to hide and rob a hiker or kill I always carry 2 pistols and bear spray. Better to have and not need than need and not have. I also carry 2 combat knives and a few other little gadgets that would help in a self defense situation. I haven't been in grizzly country yet and spent little time in black bear areas so mabe its different when you are used to it but I think its kinda crazy that we go off into the woods where grizzlies, black bears, mountian lions and criminals on the run hang out. Yet we don't bring a gun because we are more worried about being fined or jailed for having a gun without a permit. I did read a bear attack book that was intended to make people carry bear spray instead of guns but the book made me terrified of them all together.

    • @JourneyMore

      Totally understand your point. We do carry occasionally but we have the proper permits and would only use it for last resort. Bear Spray is very effective though! But still having a fire arm when you are trained and have the proper permits can add another tool of protection as last resort.

    I understand the cons being presented. However, in my 50+ yrs of riding in automobiles, i have to wear my seatbelt EVERY time i get into one. yet of the hundreds of thousands of rides i have taken, i have been in an accident ONCE (i was a passenger). So that would also be considered VERY rare occurrences. And i understand that i still have to wear a seatbelt just in case. I take a firearm on every hike that i take. Because during the times that you find yourself in the isolated spaces of a hike, and you do come across a situation where you might need something to defend your person, having and not needing is way better than needing and not having. You can deal with 'the law' from a healthy standing later on.

You may want to carry Glock 20 or 40 that shoot 10mm. 9mm ain't going to stop bears, but 10mm would have much better chance to go through their hard skull. From my experience in the wild here are my opinions on what to use for which animals.
    1.) I’d recommend bear spray for big bear attacks
    2.)For coyotes, a pellet gun or whistle,
    3.) Mountain lion you’ll need a Multi round pistol or a rifle/shotgun.
    4.) A moose you’ll need a rifle or bear spray. The creatures can be bigger than cars so you’ll need a lot to protect against them.
    5.) For humans I’d recommend a taser or pepper spray.
    6.) Wild dogs or sick animals a gun would be best in case of your safety.
    Pepper spray will work with most animals however some animals are more susceptible to it than others. That’s why understanding what animals are near your area would be important to understand before backpacking or camping.

      That’s ridiculous. Bears are far more easily deterred with bear spray than a firearm (which, given the topic of this video is the alternate). A firearm requires a precision shot, either right into the heart or brain. In order to defend yourself from a charging bear with a pistol caliber you’d need to have remarkable pistol skill under stress and adrenaline.
      Bear spray, however, is weaker than human spray. Why? Because bears’ noses/factory membranes are significantly more sensitive than those of a person. Bear mace wouldn’t affect a human like human mace would.

    I plan to bikepack across the entirety of North America later in life. Set aside a year or two to complete it all.
    I’m not stupid when it comes to bears. Those guys are not to be taken lightly and I’ll be damned if I come across a hungry smoky the bear without the blicky 😂
    But I’m not a American citizen. Probably going to have to live in the states for a while before I can get a permit to carry. I wish to travel lawfully and not get arrested every time I get pulled over 😅
    But I’d rather be Freud at court then become a angry animal’s meal. It’s hard to have a worse death than being eaten alive 😅
    I need to study American law. In japan where I’m from and still currently living at you cannot carry *any weapons period* regardless of where you go.
    You can own a gun if you have a hunting license but that’s about it.
    Unless you go to Hokkaido you won’t have to worry about bears and In general you don’t have to worry about criminals because there aren’t many.
    That being said it’s not like you won’t get attacked by anyone period.
    I carry a knife in my tackle box when I bikepack. I also carry a hatchet. My reason to the police if I ever get pulled over is that I’ll use them for camping. Laws be damned I ain’t gonna get hit by people that don’t abide by the laws just because I chose to do the opposite of them.
    Arrest me later I’m gonna fight. Probably gonna lose though 😅
    Best thing to do is to run.

    The law...yeah my 2nd Amendment. Weight? that's only for those ultra-lighters. Would bear spray deter mountain lions? also, mountain lions STALK their prey. Humans are also the biggest threat. Always carry your pistol in a holster. ALWAYS.

    every argument against pretty much boils down to a statistical argument. you're unlikely to this or that degree to need it. this is a silly argument. your cruise ship is unlikely to sink, but it's still a good idea to have a life jacket.

    Sorry…… Bear spray I guess is ok, but wind not in your favor with a bear attack situation is your funeral if there’s anything left of your body! You NEED a firearm! Me…… I’ll go to jail instead of watching myself being ripped apart!

    No. The answer is no. You do not need a firearm. All you’ll do is freak people out, add extra weight to your already heavy pack (because tacticool people always overpack) thus adding discomfort to your shoulders, and experience chaffing to your hip.

    • @JourneyMore
      @JourneyMore  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It really is taxing to carry that thing in a pack! Thank you for watching and sharing!

      That makes no sense, a gun would be on your hip or chest. It is useless in a back pack.

    • @SophisticatedDogCat
      @SophisticatedDogCat 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@xtreme4stringbass In your pack would be a weapons maintenance kit and likely spare ammunition. Besides, I never said the weapon would go into your pack. I even said towards the end that you'd experience chaffing to your hip.

      Well good luck when you run into a bear or big cat there buddy. Since you're against carrying a firearm, or some psychopath out in the woods. It doesn't ass hardly any weight carrying on my side.

      @@D-A-1776 Seen many bears on trail across the US, even had my tent visited by one. Never needed a gun. That’s how I know you’ve probably never done an overnight trip in the wild.
