  • Here's a peek into a day in my life at work - when I'm technically not supposed to be working actually. It's a bit of an honest catch up with all the questions I'm facing recently: where this channel is going, where I'm going, how I feel about my career and medicine and just the situation I'm in at the moment. Thanks for watching :)
WHO AM I: I'm Elizabeth, a medical student, painter, TH-camr and Podcaster in London. I love to think and talk about life, art, medicine, books and meaning. And also how to find the time to do those things. If you'd like to watch me paint and talk about life, I do that on my podcast ( / @feelosophywithelizabe... ) and if you'd like to read my thoughts and book notes, I have a newsletter you can join (newsletter.elizabethfilips.com/).

We need more Doctors with artistically creative minds. I admire that you constantly question and reevaluate your life's direction and journey. IMHO you will make a brilliant and compassionate MD that will find immense satisfaction in making a real difference in other people's (patients) lives. What a privilege you have to become a Doctor. And once there I hope you continue to be curious, creative, and driven! Besides, if you gave up medicine at this point you will always have an overwhelming feeling that some major piece of your life was left totally incomplete - and - I think you know it?

While doing my dishes at night, I usually let the notorious algorithm decide what I should watch next (or rather, listen to). It was a stroke of luck that I came across one of your videos, Top 5 Books for People like Me. Last week, I noticed that one of the books that you recommended, Being Mortal by Atul Gawande, was available at my local library. I picked it up and bought it home, and never have I read a non-fiction so voraciously. One thing that stood out to me was that while we’re young it’s all about forming new connections and experiencing new things but as we get older, the priorities shift - it becomes more about enjoying “everyday pleasures and the people closest to you.” I guess it is not the number of connections we make but the depth in each of the relations we have that matters towards the end.
So, thank you for the excellent recommendation; I would have never discovered the book without you.

We can't always have it together, a lot of times these periods of indecision and uncertainty in our lives actually lead us to the growth we have been seeking within ourselves. Sending you love ❤

So relatable 😂 "I don't know what the problem is" -- like, WHY can't I manage myself the way I can manage other people?! Medicine is so clear cut: sick patient ➡ investigate ➡ treat them. But figuring out life goals and how to be more effective at reaching them is so much more complicated!

Perhaps you are not looking for another perspective on the matter, but since I have been in a similar situation as you (debating not finishing medicine because I loved my side projects a lot) I will leave my two cents regardless:
I left a comment back when you announced that you were going to take a gap year and I shared how much a gap year had helped me to get clear on certain things. Like you, at the end of my gap year I decided to continue but also kept feeling conflicted. For context, im in the Netherlands so I had 3 years to go without needing to do F1 or F2 as we don't have that here. Now, its been 4 months since graduating and starting work as a doctor. Looking back, two things stand out to me:
    1. I am happy I decided to finish med school. The peace of mind that comes with graduating, even though I do not see myself practicing medicince long-term, is something I wouldn't want to live without. The security that comes with being a doc, and the fact that I have a bachelors and masters degree comes with peace of mind that I didnt knew I needed before. Whatever I end up doing as a job long-term will have the added depth of the mind of a doctor. I work as an occupational health doc atm, which allows me to get home on time and with enough headspace (and financial security) to pour hours into my other interests (I make videos 20+hrs/week). Back when working at the hospital, even as a med student, I was too mentally drained to put hours into anything else.
    2. Deciding to finish came at a cost. Pushing through 3 years of medicine and ignoring my need for more creativity and entrepreneurial pursuits has taken its toll. Looking back its safe to say I am recovering from a near-burn out. My creative muscle is recovering slowly, but it takes a lot of energy to rebuild confindence and allow a that key part of myself to exist again, something I imagine I'll need a while longer to recover from.
I think there are aspects to your situation which put you in a better position than I was: you seem to have financial security already so you don't need the doc job for that, and you seem to balance making videos/consulting and doing medicine better than I could have (at least, this is what I think I see when watching your videos). I wish you all the best! Whatever you choose, you will find value in both avenues im sure!

Hi Elizabeth , Glad that i am in the 100th like of this video. One request , please do make a video on , how can we overcome depression when we feel very lonely in life and we dont have NO friends to talk ? . All are virtual friends in internet and no real friends to interact or talk. Even if we try to reach any friend in phone to share our problems , nobody picking ups phone call and all are busy . Even watching NETFIX , TH-cam , dosent help in reducing the depression. How can we handle such situations. Please do help your thoughts on this . Thanks 🙏

While you may feel that you don't have it together, I certainly admire your work ethic! How do you handle the stress of studying medicine and working full-time while also juggling hobbies and social life? I'm always fantasising about when I get into full-time employment while studying- I'll be getting facials and massages at least once or twice a month because that stuff is stressful. lol.

Many a times what we focus on for long periods at a time, we start to enjoy a bit more ( maybe a consequence of getting better, feeling more competent at it?), same has happened with me, if i take a break from medicine I feel I could have done something else better. If I keep going then I feel yes, medicine was the right choice.

Oh the struggle, I can relate so much to it that almost hurts. To be pretty honest I never ever got close to be as successful as you are on any of my projects or my career, but the struggle to find my niche, the main topic and things like that were real to the point that I just gave up and nowadays I don't have a side project at all... But one book that helped a lot was Refuse to Choose by Barbara Sher, she write about having too many interests and how to deal with them, I couldn't apply all her advice, but the ones I already managed to apply helped a lot.

We humans are terrible at assessing ourselves. We can become experts at assessing other's needs, but are generally terrible at assessing our own needs. I tutor, and continue studying advanced topics, so I know first hand. It's so easy for me to tell my students how they should go about studying, what they should focus on, and what they should learn on a certain path, but I'm terrible making the same assertions for myself.
That's why I seek counsel. It was wise to meet your doctor friend to ask him for guidance.

I wonder if you have some kind of neurodiversity? I have dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and autism spectrum disorder (what used to be called Aspergers) and the pattern of intense all consuming focus on one area for a period of time before moving onto another area is very familiar. Obviously armchair diagnosis and Dr Google can be very dangerous and you only show a very small, carefully curated part of your life and personality in these videos (no judgement, that's actually a GOOD thing!) , BUT things like ADHD and ASD are chronically under-diagnosed, especially in women and girls, and even more so in incredibly successful and intelligent people like you. Some of the difficulties you mention in this video seem very familiar, so I thought it was worth mentioning. I could be totally wrong, I just wondered if you'd ever considered it?

I think most doctors (including those in training) fantasize about doing things outside of medicine often. That’s where hobbies and side-businesses come into play. We are multi-faceted and a lot of us NEED a creative outlet to feel whole. I started a TH-cam channel for that reason. It’s not much and I rarely post but I enjoy using IMovie to edit video (most of which I don’t actually share but I keep them for my own memories.. kind of like video scrap booking)

Hmmm, think if you are still planning to finish medical school and working to become a doctor deciding on exactly what type of content based business you want to create might be hard to pin point. Maybe the lack of committing to anything in particular is your way of making sure you keep yourself available and have space to actually go back to school.

The world need medics like you.
Any advanced ape can specialize and focus but few can connect dots outside their little boxes.
You can not deny that your mindset is rare and it may get a little lonely out there on the right side of the gaussian curve.
Especially as I may assume that you unintentionally evoke quite a bit of envy and projection issues.
All the more reason not to rebel against the often disgusting and straight out unscientific and rigif formality of initiation rituals of becoming a medic. Keep my fingers crossed for you making it past the formal barrier - and I am pretty sure you will not practice. But thats fine.
