Amtrak & NJ Transit High Speed Northeast Corridor Trains @ Princeton Junction (9/5/19)

  • READ:
    Recorded from 1245 to 1945. Track 2 is out of service, so all eastbound trains are routed on track 1. Additionally, for the first half of the video, emergency track repairs had track 4 out of service as well, resulting in westbound trains low-leveling. Enjoy the action =)

    The first time I ever went into NYC, I rode in from this station. I fell in love with broadway and theatre over the coming years, and anytime I went into the city, I departed from this station. I finally work in theatre professionally as of this year, and for some reason, TH-cam recommended this video to me. Thanks for the hard hitter, heaven knows my feelings weren’t ready for it.

      The first time I went to NYC, I rode the NJT NEC in from the Newark Penn station. I then moved to New Jersey and spent a year riding into NYC on the North Jersey Coast line from Aberdeen-Matawan. NJT stations in general evoke VERY strong memories of NYC and some formative times of my life. Walking up those steps from New York Penn onto the sidewalk on 7th Ave just blew my mind that first day. I know what you mean.

    This is my home town. Lots of nostalgia from this station - went here a lot as a kid. Taking an Amtrak here later this week from MD, seeing footage of this station gets me excited!

    It's awesome to feel the "speed impact" of these trains flying through the station at such an accelerated pace. This looks like a good place to spot and film Acela services getting into higher speed mode. The ACS-64 Amtrak electric locomotives really look cool when paired with the Amfleet stainless steel coaches. Even though there are decades between their year of contruction, the visual match is harmonious.

    We used to go down there in the 70's and 80's before they remodelled the station. I loved the fast trains rushing by on the near track. Shiny silver Amtraks...the smell of grease...the blue sparks on the catenary. I was always happy when a GG1 would come through or the Dinky would pull up behind the station.

    I always go from Princeton junction. The scary thing is the Amtracks. They are going a little under 100 but it feels like 500. You don't see the light in the distance and suddenly, with little or no honk, you hear the motors. And before you know it, the floor is shaking like crazy, the loudest sound you have listened to is crazy and the wind is so strong you almost fall down. it's crazy. Imagine japan.

    Great footage, you have a really nice view along the tracks there. The lighting toward the end was stunning - Sunset is a beautiful time to film on the railways.
    I notice the catenary looks very new shiny here, but he old 138kv pylons and sub station are still standing too. I'm guessing they will come down at some point? They must be 80+ years old now? Pretty impressive.

      Force the Freight railroads to upgrade their track and then get Amtrak to invest in High Speed in the west

    • @taoliu3949
      @taoliu3949 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Vxllain Amtrak owns no services in the west except for the long distance trains. The California trains are all owned by Caltrans, Caltrans just uses Amtraks branding on those lines and contract their crews to operate.
      That and its grossly unfair to force Freight RR to upgrade/expand capacity they don't need. If you want the tracks to be upgraded, then be willing to pay the capital costs. Amtrak has a horrible history of changing adjusting/removing service because they don't want to pay to maintain the tracks that Freight RRs don't want to use anymore. Not that its Amtraks fault, but ultimately it comes from the lack of finances to fund such projects.

    What's with the inconsistency in the use of ditch lights, bell, and horn? Even among the same locomotives owned by NJT or Amtrak, some trains will have the ditch lights on, some won't; some trains will blow their horn when passing on the inner track, then the next will blow past the outer track platform without sounding the horn.

    Can anyone explain the type of train at 13:06? Is it a subway car that is above ground or an older style heavy rail unit? It seems weird that they have the more traditional looking units and then these ones.

    • @mattk9644
      @mattk9644 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well no this train is just like any other one it goes to PA to NYC hell maybe even D.C but it’s just the fact that NJT is low on money and it’s stuck with outdated cars from like Idek 80s maybe even older you can see these same exact cars on the ACL or Atlantic City Line but yeah I do like the older style because it’s like that how feeling but the downside is that there isn’t any plug ins for phones and all plus all you got is an ac and can be a little noisy but I like the noise so it’s whatever

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On the 2 middle tracks, Regionals and Keystones (the bumblebee cab car trains) run at 125. The Acela is cleared for 135, soon to be 160. Long Distance trains (ones that have viewliner cars) are still only good for 110. The 2 outside tracks are only good for 110.

    79mph avarage is NOT high speed. It only reaches 150mph "in some sections", I wouldn't call that 'high speed'. The US really needs to rethink what high speed is.

    • @FanRailer
      @FanRailer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      125 mph here at this location is considered high speed.

    • @chris4484

    • @lorumipsum1129
      @lorumipsum1129 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The only areas where the high speed and regionals don't go at what's considered high speed is between NYC and Boston, due to curves, rougher trackages and a couple other things, but it's still fairly quick. We are working with steam locomotive era railway networks here.

    • @amjkodaz
      @amjkodaz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On this section between Trenton and South Brunswick, the inner tracks have a speed limit of 135 (Acela only) and outers have 110 for the speed limit. The average speed of the Acela overall is about 110 MPH ive heard from some sources, and in the future this area of track will see 165 MPH

    • @physetermacrocephalus9986
      @physetermacrocephalus9986 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Average" means nothing. The Acela has to stop and curve a lot more than European and Asian high speed trains.
