Andre's commentary at 1:40:45 is pure gold. Probably the most introspective and insightful tennis interviewee in the history of the game.

what's interesting is that he won 3 of his first 4 slams (W92, US94, FO99), having little to no chance going in, which I think is WHY he won those slams, i.e., no pressure.

@@uncletony6210 not sure if I agree with the first ( Wimbledon’92 ), Yes, grass wasn’t his forte’. , but keep in mind he was zero for 3 in his first 3 slams, ‘’ I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I lost to Goran in that fifth set, I guess you could say it would’ve been career suicide ‘’...... @@spirg absolutely no one was picking AA to win Wimbledon in 1992, as he only started playing the event the year before and had just gotten crushed by Courier in Paris.

Was just about to type this, so Ill just agree with you. A really underrated booth in terms of covering tennis.
I loved these USA Network night matches at the US Open. Wimbledon is the Superbowl of pro tennis, but Andre was right at the beginning of this. There aint nothing like a night match at the US Open. Especially in the 80s and 90s.

@@chocolatetownforever7537 I think from the late '80s to the mid 2000s USA network had the best coverage of event in the U.S. market. It had the best commentators and almost around the clock coverage of the U.S. Open. On the west coast, the matches would start at 8am, then the day session would much blend into the night session, and then it would all finish up after 10pm. Sometimes USA network would show the match of the day for the overnight. And I don't ever remember USA putting on air panels of commentators instead of live tennis. It was almost always about the tennis or the players, and never about the new exclusive sushi restaurant on the tournament grounds.

@@VoltagePurpleOf any event? Are we talking just tennis? And are we just talking the US Open?
That CBS booth during those years was awesome as well. Some dont, but I loved Mary Carillo. I think she was knowledgeable, and added a lot to a match. Tony Trabert was excellent as well, and I loved both of their enthusiasm for the game.
Hard to find better, but I personally think THE best tennis booth of all time was Enberg, Mac, and Collins at Wimbledon. Yes, the specialness of Wimbledon just as an event helped, but their voices, especially Enberg and Collins, were as much as a part of the tradition of Wimbledon as strawberries and cream. I looked forward to watching and hearing them every year almost as much as the tennis.

@@chocolatetownforever7537 For me, the USA network U.S. Open broadcasts were the best tennis events broadcast on U.S. TV. For sure there were some other great commentary teams and events, but I think the amount and quality of the coverage on USA network was the best. At least for me.

He was an animal, and I think intimidated a lot of guys, especially on clay. I have a lot of respect for Muster. You had to beat him, because he almost never beaf himself because he had such consistent and awesome ground strokes. To this day he has the best winning percentage in finals, winning 44 out of the 55 he made it to. Pretty clutch.
Most "clay courters" want that one French Open before they retire. Im glad Thomas got his, because he really deserved it.

@@dbehr27 lol....uh...yes I was going to say, it's 'pretty routine in the pros. I'm not a pro, but I've practiced with some, and I've broken at least a hundred balls in my life. One world class junior I used to hit with (was a practice partner for Courier once) used to break his strings about every hour lol. He needed to do multiple racquets each day. At that time I was complaining because I switched to 17 syn gut and broke my strings about every 3 hours. He used 15 and broke it hourly.

    1. When tennis was watchable - this was the last days of the golden era of modern tennis; 2. The last years of sensible, modern equipment (not overdone); 3. A year or two after this, the horrid clothing started to make it's way into tennis, especially with the western/north american players (sacks, and cheap material).

@@costage Sure, you know my age and my life. Haha. Both unfortunately and fortunately, the world surpassed the long period of when people would say "You just miss the old days" or "You're just older". It ended in the late 90s. It's no longer an issue of generations, but it is now a question of quality. Just look at the millions of TH-cam videos and social media accounts of people always mentioning about things of other eras things being better, or how awful things are these days. And many of these are from people who were either not even born yet but feel better about something from decades ago, or they were born already but too small.

I like the collared shirts, and there were still ways to be stylish and still wear them. Its a touch of class that todays clothing doesnt have.
