Opposite for me. Would slag the films I love off brutally. Call them pretentious and stuff. Took me a good few years to finally accept that my taste is my taste and that someone like Kermode, who is a film critic, is ultimately an irrelevance and not to be taken seriously. To be fair to me, I was 14 year old lad who had recently become disabled so was really stressed about fitting in and took it all to heart. Still, I stopped watching films entirely because I thought that even someone as sad as Kermode would mock me. I grew up with video games so it was hard to watch films anyway without getting called boring.
@@curiositytax9360 Everything to do with art or critics is an irrelevance if you choose it to be, it's all about if you find them interesting or not, not whether they agree with you or slag off the things you love. I think Trump is a massive dickhead but I still watch some of the less woke channels that think he's actually got a braincell. Mark is entitled to his opinion just as much as you and enough people find him interesting to have made a good career out of it - sometimes he loves films I hate, but whatever, and he also doesn't like video games and I love them. He's at least honest and passionate which is more than you can say for a lot of people now and is really all I ask.
I can’t watch a movie at home without getting distracted. This is the main reason I like going to the cinema. I saw the movie “Challengers” in the cinema. The theater was half full. I didn’t know what to expect. I left the theater on a cloud. The movie was so kinetic and the audience I saw it with were so animated. It was definitely the best movie going experience Ive had this year, by far. I then watch “Challenges” again a few months later at home and the movie I thought was so brilliant the first time around was just ok the second viewing. Then I realization that seeing it in the cinema really elevated the movie and seeing it in the comforts of my living room can’t replicate that experience
This is a great interview, thank you! Mark is my favourite film critic of all time and a true national treasure ❤👌'2001: A Space Odyssey' and 'The Exorcist' are in my top 5 favourite films of all time. I also think '2010: The Year We Make Contact' is a much over-looked and underrated sequel that makes the absolute perfect double viewing with the original!
The reason I really enjoy Kermode is that he is a complete film nerd but there's not an ounce of snobbery or superiority about how he shares his opinions. Ebert was the same. I sometimes have wildly different opinions to Kermode but he's so sincere that I never find his takes baffling.
I don’t think that’s true at all. He is a snob and there is a sense of superiority in what he says a lot of the time. He’s mellowed out past 10 years but that’s because the industries changed so much, he probably just doesn’t want to lose his celebrity. I wouldn’t say I’m a fan of Ebert now that Iv grown up but I do respect him and he’s much better than Kermode. Ebert learnt me a lot about film through his website than Kermode ever did. Kermode just made me feel like shit after listening to one of his reviews.
LOL. The guy literally blocked me from his channel & even his Twitter because of different film opinions. Which is made even weirder by the fact I wasn't even following him on Twitter & hadn't commented on his Twitter in a long time. I used to like Kermode growing up but he's became a lot more about pushing political agendas in the last decade or so & I've seen him rather rudely Tweet his followers to unfolllow him if they don't have the same politics as he did. He's a woke crybaby now & his reviews are a bore.
Wonderful Cinema Curzon Bloomsbury. Four days ago I saw at Renoir Screen "The Room next door". The auditorium is just great and the screening super. It's very important to see films, good films, in the best way possible 👍
The missing version of a movie I want to see, is the original version of "Smokey and the Bandit 3", where Jackie Gleason plays both roles. The teaser trailer for "Smokey IS the Bandit" does exist.
At 23:35, anyone else think Ella is fishing for an answer about The Devils? His previous answer wasn't what she was hoping for. Of course Mark instead takes the opportunity to talk about The Exorcist 3 again!
I also was 11 when I saw "2001" at its original release in the cinema. And I wish I could claim to have felt an instant connection, but the truth is I was bored. My opinion changed radically when I was a teenager in high school.
I was 10. Blew my mind. But I didn’t tell anyone of my friends I’d saw it because probably be bullied or something. I grew up with video games so its become harder and harder to appreciate things like 2001. It was never easy anyway. Now the stakes have been raised further. Film is just seen as boring to most. Big groan when you want to put one on. I don’t even think you could look to someone like Kermode to make you feel like you aren’t a bore because he seems to have folded.
The reason people walked out of the Cook, Thief.... etc. was likely because of the child molestation that HAPPENS on screen. Yes, the adult may have been a actor, the crew may have thought, hey this is art we're participating in, but that was a child and they had no business doing that to him.
“2001” is somewhat less enigmatic to certain music lovers. Right at the start, Strauss’s “Zarathustra” music points directly back to Nietzsche’s ape/man/superman idea and installs it in the viewer’s mind. As to what films mean, the Barthesian pluralist in me notes that a Rorschach test is meant to probe the psyche of the viewer, not of the guy who made the inkblots.
I actually fear for our local Curzon.....Don't get me wrong, it's thriving, has a great selection of films, and is so much nicer than than the usual brands....However, one of the other local cinemas is closing soon, a massive national chain brand, and we are now going to get flooded with that overflow, making getting seats harder. Also, all the chavs.....
Charisma is not a virtue of an Interviewer. She let him speak at length which is a virtue of an interviewer. In other words, you are ignorant on the subject.
@30yearsoldiam1 being interesting and engaging is enough, and Ella is not. Besides, your assertion that charisma is not a virtue of an interviewer is completely arbitrary and not based in any fact. Where did you get that from?
@@curiositytax9360 How could you despise Trump and yet have a problem with someone ELSE who despises Trump? Nothing Kermode has ever said about that monster has been incorrect or out of bounds…I actually found his anti-Trump “rant” on The Apprentice to be quite tame. The things I’ve thought about Trump would probably get me thrown into a concentration camp.
"I've gone ten minutes without mentioning The Exorcist" - Mark Kermode, after not mentioning The Exorcist for only 8 minutes.
Long-term Mark Kermode fan but Ella Kemp is new to me. What a great, delightful, charming conversation between the two of them.
Love Mark Kermode, always a delight!
Always a good listen when Mark Kermode talks film.A big influence on learning about the magic of cinema .

I could listen to Mark talk for HOURS
Especially on the HORROR genre!
Brilliant conversation. Thanks to Mark, Ella, and Curzon for sharing it with us!
I can't believe Mark managed to get as far as 7:55 into the interview without mentioning The Exorcist.
I seem to recall he saw it on a double bill with The Devils.
1 min in a he’s already in ‘review mode’…
Bless him!

Excellent interview.
Well done. I'd never heard of you. You interview one of my favourite reviewers. Now I've heard of you. Curzon.
So be it.
I was born in 1992 and I saw 2001 when I was 12. My brother shut the lights off and made me watch it alone.
good to see Mark's Harrington jacket make it's usual appearance 👌

I had a flipper disc version of Goodfellas, never had any other film in that format
14:55 He is referring to his conversation with Willem Dafoe on the film Antichrist.
Kermode said "it's about misogyny" and Dafoe disagreed.
Legion was an excellent book that deserves a "restoration" cut of Exorcist 3😮. I am also a William Peter Batty/ Friedkin fan. Well done.
Its in Mayfair
I find it funny that Mark Kermode sits in the "Last Seat on the Left"
Ha! I wasn't the only one who felt like there was a jokey reference in there when he said it! :D
Born July 1963 and said he was 62, Mark you only turned 61 in July.
“Alright class, today we’re going to talk to somebody we wouldn’t normally interact with”
At 15:00, he's talking about Willem Dafoe and Antichrist
Curzon in Belfast is sadly gone - good childhood memories though......
That's a shame. Wish we had Curzons here in the Rep of ireland
