Then you can relate with the adjustment period when going to or coming from Python. I really wish Python had them as well then I wouldn't have to think about it every time I switch.
As an amateur writer I love this so damn much: I strive to be as descriptive as possible in my prose while still flowing smoothly, and it isn't always as easy as I wish it was. Thank you for giving me words (and punctuation) to internalize!
This video was beautiful, informative, and therapeutic; a discussion which allows us to think about how aspects of language shape and drive our own lives.
This is gorgeous; punctuation is such a turn-on. I think the experience of hearing or reading poignant or profound punctuation is like a beautiful dance: not anticipated but swept away by the rhythm and feeling. Thanks for all you create and share
Combining the two most enjoyable subjects I have ever come across, this channel keeps schooling. Thanks for great vid and that drilling animation bit really sums up the quality of this channel: DEEP.
This is me: for years I had these thoughts too! Although never so eloquently expressed; people always seemed a bit caught off guard, even annoyed by my use of colons and semi-colons - as well as my use of other types of punctuation. It was such a struggle for me, that -after a while- I found it very difficult to have any sense of how to use them anymore; it felt as if I had unlearned a part of language; unlearned, repressed, a part of myself: a part of my personality; playful use of language and punctuation, but still intentful, while content with the grey messiness of translating speech and thought to writing.
Thanks a lot for explaining this ! I often have trouble with semi-colons; I basically used them when I wasn't sure whether to use a comma or a period. It kind of works. And is enhanced by the fact it's called a "period-comma" in French XD
English as a language always makes me want to learn more ways to express myself! These videos are top quality and makes me happy I'm subscribed to you guys!
All of my teachers growing up absolutely hated semicolons, because they found it hard to tell if someone had used it correctly. It’s easier to tell if someone understands the use of a colon because if what they right isn’t a fact after the colon then they are clearly misunderstanding it. Semicolons, like you said, link ideas together that can be related but aren’t a definitive. Because if this, I haven’t been allowed to use semicolons in my school work, and now find it hard to write with them.
I was really angry today and this video showed up. In 2 minutes everything was calm and beautiful again. How is this even possible? Again, thank you so much for being here in my times of despair :)
I've never thought of comparing colon and semicolon. In German these two punctuations aren't named near. It's clear that a semicolon is between a full stop and a comma.
'The Semicolon, by gently linking ideas together, invites reflections and interesting juxtapositions.' Wow, so well stated. I tend to use them a lot, particularly in close proximity to comma (as shown near the end of the vid).
English is not my native language, so when I read the words colons and semicolons, I thought it was a video about a**holes and the semi a**holes in one's life.
I'm not sure how much you care about grammar, but fyi neither the semicolon nor colon were used correctly in your sentence. The semicolon should've been a comma and there shouldn't have been any punctuation where you put the colon.
What a great idea to remind us of the significance of what we never really understood to began with; therefore we went through life asking ourselves which one do I use: semicolon, colon, comma, or just a damn period.
This is grammar served on a philosophical plate; I like the combination. Also, really impressed by the video: its animation and the narrative voice. (I am sure I nailed the use of semicolon and colon....)
Genius is an education, without a teacher in a mumbled sentence. Thankx for explaining, something Christ's College, C anterbur, with it'spomp, never shared with it's students, in the 1980's. Bravo, for now!
That quote with the string of semicolons - they were used the same was one uses commas in lists, but used when the individual items already have commas, so as not to confuse them. The semicolons in that quote did not have them implication you delineated.
Tofran Bohk colons : is for a fact and semicolon ; is for a describing one thing that could contribute to a statement If you had a feeling for example (easiest way to use a semicolon) it would be: Jim was sad; it’s nearly fall. This suggests that the change in season isn’t the ONLY reason Jim is sad, but is one reason. It suggests that Jim might not know the other reasons for him being sad, but knows that one of them is because of Fall.
@@stevenglansburg856 I think you can only use a colon after a complete sentence so it would probably be. I went to the store and picked up some things: batteries and groceries.
Concerning the second William James example, he "lists" several statements that begin with "by". Previously in this video, it was stated that a semicolon could always be replaced with a full-stop. This appears contradictory to me. What am I missing? Shouldn't the James example have actually used colons for the "by" statements?
I'm sorry but because English is not my mother tongue: I can't catch the subtle differences in meaning between 1:28 and 1:47; Could you please help me to understand? Thanks for your help.
Hyun-woo Park 아 한국인이시네요, 제가 이해한 것을 말씀드리면 세미콜론을 사용한 문장은 "마리아는 너무 빡쳐서 다른사람들에게 오해받을 바엔 혼자 있기로 했다." 라는 정도의 뜻이 되고, 콜론을 사용한 문장은 "마리아는 다른 사람들에게 오해받는 것에 빡쳐서 혼자 있기로 했다" 라는 의미로 보실 수 있을 것 같아요!
Thank you. I am surrounded by people who had that English teacher, the one who believed that semicolons should never be used and taught (apparently) thousands of students...
Thank you for this! I had a good handle on colons and semicolons back in high school and college, but as I've gotten older my grasp on how the semicolon is used has become slippery. Could you please do a video on all the uses and conjugations of the verbs LIE and LAY? I would also like to see you explore the words EFFECT and AFFECT. If I remember correctly, they can both be used as nouns and verbs. Oh, and when is it better to use a dash rather than a colon or semicolon? And why do book publishers have that special long dash when our keyboards only have that measley short dash? We have to type two of them, making our sentence look stupid.
Gabriel Rodrigues The dash stops temporary the flow of the sentence to inroduce information or describe what's being talked about even when it is not necessary or related.
Nice definition Alejandro M. ! You can also use a pair of dashes around a clause to add information without slowing the flow of the sentence, like parentheses but less aside-y.
Alejandro M. You mean when the dashes enclose a sentence - like this - which is different than when they do not enclose a sentence - rather, they separate parts of an oration.
This is it! Semicolons deserve so much more love for the fantastic function they possess! I have always gotten complaints from teachers in school that my sentences are too long and that I should use more full stops; in my defiance I just continued using multiple commas and semicolons. For me a sentance is the totality of a thought, not in the grand scale of a philosophical concept but rather a meaningful thought in context. I don't think we really think with full stops most of the time, I suggest that we think with commas, semicolons and abrubt endings and beginnings.
I wish Maria all the best in life.

Honestly how else could we close out statements only to find you left one out and it has ruined an entirely different line of code

The semicolon is slowly disappearing; it had me rather melancholic.
semicolon are not disappearing on programming for sure.
Ironic, because colon would have been more fitting for the logical rigidity of programming.
Yeah, ironic. But colon was already used. So they needed both.
