Just a tip that I learned from my dermatologist. The easiest way to have your skin absorb the correct amount of sunscreen is to put it on in layers. Put some on, wait a couple minutes, put some more on right on top of your original layer etc. it’s much easier to rub in and you still get the correct amount of coverage. I find this is the best way…especially for your face.

Interesting side note: I have the Coola sunscreen spray and the instructions for how to apply state that it should NEVER be sprayed directly onto the face. Rather, one is to spray the sunscreen on the hand and then apply to the face. I have to say, kudos to Coola 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Two years ago one of your videos made me realize I needed a magnifying mirror for applying makeup better. It was then I saw this tiny bump on the inside corner of my upper eye lid. I knew exactly what it was because I had a basal cell on my cheek at 16 years old. Sure enough that's what it was. So I'm embarrassed to say that I was thinking that I might get a mini eye job out of this because basal cell doesn't spread, right? Not that worried because I've been down this road before. Well then my doctor ordered an MRI to make sure it hadn't spread to my eye and if so, I could lose it and/or my tear duct(s). Boy that sure changed things! Luckily it didn't spread down into my socket, but required MOHS surgery and then I was sent right after the removal (a huge hole for a tiny bump) to a reconstructive eye surgeon that same day. He had to take tissue from my other eye lid to fill the hole and put a stint in my tear duct.
I'm 52 and that was a wakeup call! Both surgeons said this is so common in that area so for anyone reading this, don't forget to go around your eyes! I never did because of chemical sunscreens burning and finally realized mineral sunscreens did not. You'd think every derm would tell you little things like this and maybe they assume everyone knows, but I had to learn on TH-cam. All the tanning beds/laying out in the 80's and soccer games in flip flops have done some damage, but no more. I'm on board now, finally. And I used to be a pharmaceutical rep calling on derms! When we're young we think we're invincible.
So, I just had to tell you. I came to your channel for makeup advice and you ended up possibly saving my eye, Angie. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! I've been meaning to tell you since my surgery last year and this video reminded me and I hope you see this.

I believe in multiple sources so I watched Doctorly (Dr. Shah), Lab Muffin, and Glow By Ramon measure their faces and do the math; and they all concluded about 1/4 tsp total for face, neck and ears.
I think they mentioned different densities of formulas but it’s negligible. Lab Muffin said mineral sunscreens have about 1/5 less volume than chemical but how precisely are you really going to measure day to day?
And your videos are always so informative and like listening to a really smart girl friend or sister. Thanks for discussing reapplication. 70% of SPF 50 by the end of the day is still great! I’ve been topping off once midday with a thinner layer because I figure the goal is to maintain an even film since modern filters don’t degrade as much as they migrate with skin oils or get rubbed off during the day.
I’m glad you also mentioned hats and sunglasses. My regular eyeglasses also have UV Protection.

I apply my sunscreen in the morning; I apply one layer, wait a minute or two and then go in with a second layer. I top up with mineral powder SPF from Brush on block, skinscience, Peter Thomas Roth, (now discontinued) and one from a Spanish brand. I tap it over my makeup rather than rubbing as this seems to prevent the bristles picking up any oils from my skin. I am very conscious of where the sun is and always walk in the shade. I wear hats and take sun protection very seriously since living with melasma is no joke.

I'm so grateful to my esthetician (she's also an NP)who found a suspicious blemish on the side of my nose. Sure enough, I saw my dermatologist and she said it was a precancerous lesion. She removed it, and I go back for a followup.
The effects of the sun are definitely cumulative. I stopped baking in my 20s, use sunscreen daily, and every once in awhile, a precancerous spot crops up.
If I'm driving in the afternoon, I do use a powder mineral sunscreen. I believe it's by Mineral Fusion.
I love the hat. That's something that I truly need.

Thank you for another truly great and informative video! 😊 👏
Just one thing: The volume (ml) may differ depending on the formula, it’s the weight (mg) that’s the same in the testing of the spf. For instance, oils and silicones weigh a lot less than equal volume of water and glycerin, they differ in density. How much air that’s “whipped” into an emulsion may also differ and effect the difference in volume. That’s most notable if it’s a mousse, like EVY’s sunscreens.
But I think keeping to the ¼-½ tsp rule is still the way to go. If it gets too complicated, some may just get confused and skip using sunscreen altogether. As they say, the best sunscreen is the one you use!

Hi Angie, Watching this with stitches on my nose from my Moh's (skin cancer) surgery last week. I truly believe that the basal cell carcinoma that I had (and will have more, I'm sure) is from the sun exposure as a kid, before there were sunscreens, I'm 59. Especially since I've worn sunscreen on my face everyday for 35 or more years. I have trouble doing so well on my arms and backs of hands but am striving to do better. I'm hoping that when the 30 and 40 year olds get to be older, they see way less skin cancer than we do just because they grew up in a time when sunscreen was available. Thanks for the video and good info. Hope people are taking action and not just listening.

Don't forget: it's 1/4 teaspoon for face, ears, and neck. Not just to the face. That means 1/8 teaspoon for just half of your face will be giving you more like 1/2 teaspoon for your face, ears, and neck. While there is no harm in overapplying, aside from to your wallet, it will also feel less cosmetically elegant as you found.
Most women only need 1/4 teaspoon for face, ears, and neck.

You informed and influenced me that using 1/4 tsp sunscreen on my face and and additional on neck/upper chest Every. Single. Day. I am not outside much, but I live where it can be quite warm in early Spring, Summer and early Autumn, and blotting perspiration results in some loss of SPF, so I reapply at least twice a day. I consider SPF to be an essential skincare step now and think my skin looks better, but I wish I had started before my early 50’s. I am very pale and burn before any tan occurs, so I have damaged my skin through sunburns on a number of occasions, especially when a child and teenager. After playing around with some of the mineral sunscreens that you scored very high, I learned about and discovered a few Japanese and Korean sunscreens that work really well for me, either a combination mineral/chemical or 100% chemical variety. The biggest difference is I am happy to wear them Every. Single. Day. Thank you.

We are sold so much bs about sunscreens, but this tells it like it is, with science, evidence-based info - and with added hat advice too - after all, after 50 (or in my case 60) we need to keep our faces shaded otherwise we are likely to get brown spots and other delightful marks popping up on our skin - I guess we're lucky in the UK as the sun isn't as strong, but covering up is as important as sunscreen application. Thanks for this great advice!

Very informative video as always Angie. I guess I'm lucky in that I'm photosensitive and have always used the highest SPF available since childhood. Although I used to hate the feeling of it, I'm reaping the benefits now as my skin looks very good for being 50. Most people are shocked at my age and often say that I look in my 20's, although I'm not quite sure I believe that. I currently use the new La Roche Posay UVmune SPF50 that also protects against long wave UVA. It's a beautiful cosmetically elegant sunscreen. Hydrating yet non greasy, non sticky and water resistant. I love it alone and under makeup. In the UK we have a UVA star rating from 1 star to 5 stars, and all the sunscreens I use and love have a 5 star UVA rating. It's a pity you can't get them in the US, but it seems that the FDA is a fairly tough regulatory body in terms of funscreen approval. Thanks for always providing such amazingly thorough content. Best wishes. Anna

She's the one that told me that this is one of the best sunscreens ever. That's why I use it. She said to use a shot glass size of sunscreen on your face and on your body. Just saying. 💖💖💖

AWSOME video Angie!! I always listen to the Budget Dermatologist and Dr Dray and I love them both. But I learned so much from you too especially the makeup powder and a big reminder not to just depend on Cc cream 50 because I stared doing that and now I will apply sunscreen under CC cream as you are right, I was not putting enough of the CC cream on for enough protection. Thank you pretty lady😊

Thanks for this video, Angie. I play golf about three times per week during the warmer months and I started using the Mychelle sunscreen in addition to wearing a hat due to your advice last year in your sunscreen video. I got compliments about my skin all summer long last year. So, this has led to me buying lots of hats, wide brimmed hats, of different materials which I wear all through the different seasons. I find the tinted sunscreens quite messy, however I'd rather have sunscreen stains on my clothes than a skin cancer. Thanks again.

Angie, you look better than ever!! Seriously, you're getting younger looking! I am a living testimony to the anti-aging effects of daily wearing of sunscreen. When I was 14 I started breaking out and my mom let me use foundation, (I know, these days kids wear it at 12). The foundation I used for years was simply Bonnie Bell, which said, "with sunscreen." I never understood what that meant and I didn't choose it because of that. I just bought it because it matched on my skintone and was reasonably priced at the drug store. Because I broke out, I wore it every, single day throughout my teens and through most of my 20s, until I began using Estee Lauder when I could afford department store brands. When I was 31 years old a cosmetologist complimented me on my youthful-looking skin, (I had zero wrinkles), and asked me if I had always worn sunscreen. That was the first time I ever thought about that Bonnie Bell makeup that said, "with sunscreen," and I told her that yes, I guess I had been wearing sunscreen every day since age 14. How do I know it wasn't just a fluke and that it's just good genes? Because my upper chest and arms DO have age spots and sun damage, but my face does NOT, even now at well over age 60! I am a walking "before and after" poster child for sunscreen! Please people, wear sunscreen every day. Even if you don't care about the look of aging, wear it to prevent skin cancer! ❤

I agree with your thoughts on the re-applying two hour hour. I personally do not unless of course I’m gonna be under the rays for long. However, one argument I hear derms make about it is that it wears off after some time. Kinda like how foundation or blush can disappear on your face (def true if you’re oily like me). Which is why they advocate for two hours. Now irl I ain’t gonna be doing that lol but I’m glad you brought up the research of it being 30% less effective cause I can rest more at ease now lol

It's almost like primer for me! still haven't got the Mychelle but I need a day to have nothing to do to go get it! I've been using my standard Elta MD and Colorscience powder. @@jr-pr9lw All windows block UVB. All car windows are TEMPERED glass, which also block UVB, like glass everywhere. The windshield is LAMINATED glass, two sheets of glass with a layer of UVA hating polymer between them. This makes the windshield of all modern cars UPF 50, blocking 98% of the UVA hitting it.

My daughters and I just came back from the Gulf coast of Florida. One can not overstate how strong the sun is there. We spent most of our time under an umbrella, applied lotion sunscreen to begin with, and used spray sunscreen *hourly* when we reapplied. We constantly used SPF 50 face sticks, probably every 30 minutes. We were absolutely militant, and we *still* got a little pink/tan in places. You just can’t overdo the sunscreen and other sun protections.

Even when you're in the shade UVA rays bounce off the sand & water so they can still hit your skin so it's important to apply often as you did or cover up with clothing.

Hi Angie I don’t usually write questions to other TH-camrs but I’ve been watching your videos for a couple of years now and appreciate your content as I’m 51.
I have dry, sensitive skin and use tret 3x a week and still experiencing flaking. I have mild rosacea as well. Just wondering what your top 3 moisturizing mineral tinted sunscreens are? I’ve tried many of your recommendations but all have been too drying- the last one being DRMTLGY which was also too dry. Also I’m in Canada so difficult to find certain ones like the R and R as it’s not available. I can order from the US Amazon site although it’s pricey. If you can suggest a couple and thank you! Very happy at how successful your channel has become. You are smart and your content is very good and you obviously have put in the time and gotten back rightful rewards 👍

Have you tried dropping the percentage of Retin A? I have heard from several derms on TH-cam that consistency is more important than the percentage. I went back to .025% because .05% was making me constantly flake.

Great video to remind us all to ramp up the amount we use! I use the 1/4 tsp approach (thanks to your very early videos) but often have to remind myself what this really looks like. One thing that caught my attention though is the use of 2mg as the testing measure. This is measurement of mass, so consistency would have an impact as measuring in ml via a tsp is a unit of volume, so they don’t equate exactly as you suggested. That said, the difference in efficacy between 30spf and 50spf is almost negligible, so using a 50spf should ensure very high coverage and protection even if it’s a lighter (less dense) product.

Hi Angie! I tried the EltaMD UV elements and absolutely love the way it feels on my skin! It feels like it does good things for this 61 year old face. Only problem was if I put on enough, I ended up looking like I was wearing someone else's face because I am essentially the color of a sheet of paper. 😂 But I solved the problem with a little bit of LA Girl Pro mixing Pigment (the white one) and it's great now! I'm protected from all those UVA/UVB nasties and I still look like me when the make up is done. Just thought I'd share that little tweek. Love your channel!

I have a question that has always left me scratching my head. I’ve noticed some mineral spf 30 sunscreens have a higher zinc or titanium oxide percentage then some mineral spf 50 sunscreens. Any reasoning for this? It just makes sense to me that the higher active percentages would equate to a higher spf rating. I’ve tried looking it up but have been unable to find the reasoning.

I wear sunscreen everyday. I used to just wear an spf 15. But I do go out with my dogs and we moved to Georgia, and the sun seems much stronger when I go out with them. So now I use the spf 15 and something stronger on top of it. At least and spf 30. My husband had some precancerous things taken off the left side of his face. I told him it’s from driving. And I gave him some of my sunscreen and then bought him some for men. I don’t think he uses either one. So he’ll be going back to the dermatologist sooner than I will. I had her check my whole face and a few other places. I had no spots on me. So my sunscreen is saving me, I’m sure he is not. I usually just put a big glob of both on my hand. I want the sun protection.
