  • "Less haste, more speed" goes the old adage which is why it's always better to wait until you're 100% sure rather than dive in before trying to backtrack.
A few thoughts on the importance of décalage in conference interpreting and whether there is any scope for filling in the style of a live broadcaster

Wow, Patrick, as a conference interpreter and conference interpreter trainer, I was already a big fan of your work and how you communicate about conference interpreting. With this video you hit it right out of the park. Sucking up pride, admitting your mistake in front of everyone, analysing it openly in order to prevent it from happening again. Great lesson for all conference interpreters and interpreting students.
I understand your usual technique of adding the surname when a coach only uses the given name. It shows how thoughtful you are of your audience and it’s the stuff that differentiates a great conference interpreter from a good one. Here that technique tripped you up, however, and it worked against you. Regardless of how good our preparation is, a speaker may always mention a name we hadn’t heard before or we wouldn’t think of in this context or setting. Imagine an interviewer or moderator asking someone for their favourite artist or their biggest example in life. Any name might pop up! Another technique we often use when we want to buy time with names is repeat the name phonetically as pronounced by the speaker (without adding or leaving anything out) as good as we can and hoping we’ll know who is meant from what the speaker says next. In that case we use the phonetic name as a filler, cross our fingers we’ll know who is meant from what the speaker says next and then specify that person or pronounce their name again in the way target language speakers would recognise the name (which is not always how it would be pronounced properly, but that’s another topic altogether.) :)

Hi Tom, what a lovely message, that's so nice to hear. Yes, I've done that before with names that I've been less familiar with but you do always get that sinking feeling! I'm glad you got some value out of the video - I was wary of it coming across as self-indulgent!

Hey Patrick, love your videos mate. Do you mind telling us how we can break into the field of football commentary. Like what course do we choose in college, after that where do you go, how do you get noticed and acknowledged in the field of commentary, how do you get hired. It would be great if you could make a video on this.
    Cheers !

Hi Toby, thanks for your comment. Like any career commentary can be lucrative depending on how much value you can add to your clients. Go into it with passion and a decent living should be a consequence

To be fair Roberto Mancini did get it wrong, Jorginho didn’t win the FA Cup, Chelsea lost to Leicester City
