Years and years after buying one of his "rubbish" charcoals off the street (which i love and is beautiful) he sends me his catalog of paintings. I look at his paintings at least once a week, have tried to study them, and copy them. He has been compared to Sickert. Of all the painters i love his brushmarks makes me smile the most and his compositions are gems. So many great paintings. Pete the Street rules ok.
The Pete Brown honesty and modesty from a talented and sincere artist. Few are able to articulate the the creative process with practical advice that will inspire others.
A few things strike me about this. The main one is just how naturally brilliant a painter he is; another is his resilience, doggedness, hardiness [to weather etc]. I also wonder if he is regularly bothered by the general public much, either in the form of general timewasters, jaywalkers, or even just those lost in admiration and awe [as I would be]. I love this type of NEAC/RA [before it went trendy] style of painting, have aspired to it for years and more or less failed to achieve something like it. For this reason, I admire it even more. I attended art schools for many years, met hundreds of students and tutors and never encountered anyone doing it or teaching it.
LOVE, LOVE! Thanks James Gurney for sharing this post! Peter Brown does nail it: painting is a process, a verb, not an end result. It is the act of engaging and of creating and deepening a connection with what surrounds us.
While watching this man paint I was seeing another masterpiece taking shape over the years: a beautiful soul that has endured challenges and setbacks but tenacious in the desire to live life to the full.
Wonderful, insight with honest advice. Exceptional. I've been painting for over 20 years on and off and never had the confidence to paint on location until after I attended your zoom meeting on the Harrogate exhibition. I've become increasingly more drawn into how you work, it really is captivating. I've only done two plein air paintings since and wish I'd done it sooner, it's a completely different experience. Thank you Pete.
I felt he DID nail it, loose, fresh, wonderful colour matching and spot on values, it is a lovely painting full of detail but without being fussy. He's so talented and doesn't realise it.
Fully agree with all the foregoing. How unassuming and how much more beautiful paintings often are than the original reality. Bravo Pete and thank you.
I loved watching that scene take shape but it's ridiculous how much time I spent worrying how Pete was going to get that painting home while it was still wet... 😁
I am glad I have run into your video. I miss doing what the video about and what your saying I have experienced do the outdoor painting wish to do that again. this year. I just need some buyers. Thanks so much.
Hi Pete. I can totally relate to your description of the process as I go through basically the same thing when painting florals. Make me want to get out and do some more plein air though.
@@nedbrown8783 I left Paris in 2022. I moved to the South of France. I have two flats side by side one is an art studio with bedroom, wc, kitchen and a decent art studio with a fabulous view. Cannes. Great to paint the views down here Cannes, St Raphael, Antibes, St Tropez and inland like what the fauvists did and Winston Churchill after WW2. The times of year mid May to mid October. There’s about 10 lifetimes of painting to be done here and you’re the man for the job 😅
Every american artist even the not so good ones i see on youtube in these kind of videos just spout out a load of incredibly pretentious sounding nonsense trying to convey themselves as "deep" or "profound" and i find it so cringey and hard to watch, so its lovely to see an english artist as i am yet to find one who is not humble and honest and trying to actually share with the viewer and not just promote their 'deepness'.
"you'll never nail it"--just like life--what a wonderful artist & beautiful spirit
I thought the same. He says this as he paints this gorgeous piece. He comes across so genuine and humble, the real deal.
Great maestro painter PETER BROWN, I'm só fan !!!!

I remember those 'Rubbish' charcoal drawings we elected Pete a member of the RBA on the strength of them.

Because most are too busy trying to sound profound and deep over some super emotional music and not actually sharing anything interesting or useful.

I love the way his initial washes of colour capture the light and the overall tonality of things. Fabulous painter!
Love your attitude and approach..."the process". Living life, making footprints in the sand.

A wonderful observation.

I loved watching that scene take shape but it's ridiculous how much time I spent worrying how Pete was going to get that painting home while it was still wet... 😁

Hi Pete. I can totally relate to your description of the process as I go through basically the same thing when painting florals. Make me want to get out and do some more plein air though.

Another nice piece Pete, you could seal the back of your MDF, but you may already do it.

Be great if someone paints this part here and call it "The painter" 10:03
Mute. I want to see you paint. Not hear you talk.
Loved watching this! Thank you.
