A LOT of fanfics are written by teenagers. Often they are using the younger character as a stand in for themselves & they don't see anything wrong with the age gap/power imbalance.
I don’t mind people shipping whoever they want to ship, but what annoys me most is what you touched upon with Ron, Dumbledore, etc, and the other way around with Malfoy and Snape, where they write them hugely out of character just because of their own personal preferences
This is such a pet peeve for me as well!! Fan fictions treat harry like a blank slate and not a character with his own personality too! They’ll make him really submissive just so that they can pair him with Draco even though Harry’s actually really feisty. I don’t get the point of writing a fanfiction if you’re just going to change everything about the characters in order to force them together!! I don’t mind Draco and Harry as a ship, it does kind of work since they’re both so obsessed with each other but people won’t work with the chemistry that has been provided for them and instead make it so that Harry gets pregnant with Draco’s baby, like NO 😭😭. Another reason this pisses me off is that when a ship is gay, particularly two men, they will actively force one of the male characters to act really feminine, like dramatically feminine and it comes across as really homophobic that you can’t have two men in a relationship without making one if them ‘the woman’

I don't know if you read the books or only watched the movies. If you read the books and still think that ron and hermoine don't fit together then fair. But if you only watched the movies then i highly recommend you to read the books, bc in the books ron and hermoine are a much better ship and also are definitely meant for each other. In the books both hermoine and harry laugh at the idea of being together bc they are like borther/sister (if you think that harra+hermoine are better which people who don't like ron+hermoine a lot of time think). Generally the books are also a lot more detailed and the characters differ a lot to the movies, specifically ron and ginny, who were properly character assassinated in the movies, leading to a lot of fans rather leaning into harry+hermoine rather than harry+ginny and ron+hermoine.

Out of the 2 incarnetions of this ship Tomarry is the more popular i think, the fics for this one always tend to fall under two major camps: time travel fix-its where Harry is send back in time for whatever reason and decides to try and stop Tom from becoming Voldemort or Timeline mergers where Tom and Harry's crews go to Hogwarts together. The Harrymort ones are a bit more questionable....lots of stockholm syndrome and weird sex slave stuff as was mentioned in the video, there are some in wich Voldemort manages to come back to life when Harry is an auror becuz of "secret 8th horocrux" or "Harry became master of Death while still having a part of Tom's soul im him, so he also counts as a master" most of the time they boil down to Harry having an internal crisis over the idea of catching any sense of feelings for his family murderer. When it comes to Voldy's appeareance, only a few brave souls stick to the emanciated and skeletal snakeface image, sometines it gets written as it being a glamour he puts to create more fear or Worntail somehow botching the ritual to bring him back.

As a gay man I find it weird that teenage girls seem to love writing problematic gay relationships. I mean why ship harry with his bully or his bully teacher, why don't they ship him with Ron or Cedric as often? Same with Stiles and Derek, why not Stiles and Scott?
Hot take: I actually think Drarry works in a post-war world in a weird way. I think there's an appeal to it for some fans, because it fully shows Harry's acceptance that the world is gray, not black and white. Draco is a horrible person, but he's also a child/teenager that grew up under fascist and racist parents and a fascist and racist high-class world. Doesn't really make it right, but like, he has no other role models. Like imagine growing up your whole life thinking this is okay behavior, a 11 year old raised in that environment isn't going to question or act out of what he's been told his whole life. If anyone can be rehabilitated in this story, it is by far Draco. I even think it honestly elevates the story more if we get that exploration, because Harry Potter....it isn't actually that gray, it is very black and white despite all of Rowling's attempts or excuses. But having a character work through the terrible fascist and racist things he learned as a kid and learn to not do that would help remedy that in a real way, and show a very real side to how these systems in reality. I think it'd be cool to see Harry learn the power of love/compassion even towards those he used to hate, when it's justified, really hammering home his arc of realizing the world isn't black and white. It'd be cool to see Draco being a microcosm of the larger wizarding world's attempts to deradicalize. Now, I personally greatly dislike Draco, I actually think he is very obnoxious and pathetic and not a "bad boy" at all (all of that flew out the window the minute Hermione punched him in the face and he started crying for his father). But I think it'd be cool to see this, and honestly, Drarry has such toxic gay vibes it's fun to explore, even if I'm not sure I'd ever have them get together. Not really sure if I ship Drarry the same way a lot of people do, but, that's my take on why people would and reasons I can get behind.
My only problem with Drarry is that all of Harry’s personality gets thrown out the window to make him submissive to Draco in most of the fandom writing. It could honestly still work with their actual personalities.
Meh...as far as I know, in canon, they never really became friends after the war, no less romantic partners, but they were on speaking terms. If I were to stretch it, I'd still see them as friends and just friends. A pretty unexpected friendship too, considering their upbringings and who they were during the war. And also the fact that Harry has Ginny! And to a less fleshed-out extent, Draco has Astoria. But if you really had to ship Drarry...the least you can do it with their post-war versions. Draco and Harry being together as they were teens is simply just...not okay...and swings pretty far from canon. It was incredibly toxic, unhealthy, emotionally and physically abusive, almost fatal in one case...yikes. I usually like to stick to canon or what is established by canon when it comes to fictional relationships. If I were to ship something non-canon, I will be specific about it so as not to diverge too far from canon, and/or I have a really good reason to (still based on established canon).

I think when it comes to Drarry the movie version of Harry and Draco just don't come off like they hate eachother the way they did in the books idk that's at least why I think Drarry is the way it is. For reference Draco pretty much actively shits on him in the books. But in the movie instead of throwing a paper message at him made a conscious choice to make it a flying swam that still has a mean thing but why the fck did he make it a swam. There's alot that's changed in the movie to begin with making Draco more forgivable then he is in the books. Same thing happened with Snape. Sense there's this huge disconnect between the movie watchers and the book readers you often get characters change poorly or lean into better qualities. Like I think movie Ron is the reason he gets nothing in fan content sense Hermione in the movies took some of his lines. So sense most people who only watched the movies or watch it before reading the books don't know how he is in the books and write him off cause the movies mainly show his bad qualities for the most part. With Hermione it's probably the yaoi effect. (Context not all gay ships are like this but happens quite alot in fanfics its why Ginny is always bashed on or "crazy" in them) It's where a gay pairing is so popular but they have to write a villian or a way for the og love interest to not be involved with the protag take kh for instance. In the early kingdom hearts fanfics people made Kairi a love obsessed crazy girl who liked Sora. Or take Twilight (hate to bring it up but) people who shipped Jacob and Edward would write Bella that way. (I mean like she isn't really that rememberable out of protags but still) I think there's only a few fanfics where Drarry doesn't bash on Harry's friends. The only few ships I enjoy is like Luna and Harry because I just think their cute. Or Ginny and Neville cause she's full of confidence and he needs someone who'd lift him up and believe in him. Idk I just vibed with these I also like Luna and Neville only to find out it wasn't canon at somepoint which sucked. And lastly the reason I brought up drarry is because their are some really well written stories on it yeah it takes a new approach to things and changes how characters act sometimes but, for the most part keep things relatively the same and if there's no character bashing that's a win. Long story short fanfic culture straight up is all emotional and biased its why some characters are changed to fic the writers way of seeing them and letting some resentment or dislike towards a character shown. Shipping will always be like that probably it's unfortunate but true.

I love and hate the depravity of the Harry Potter fandom.
I love redemption and second chances. I'm all for redeeming characters like Draco and Snape. Draco was just a traumatized kid, and Snape -- well, if you read closely, the idea for his redemption is there, and there were moments like him telling someone off for using the M slur that seems to attempt to show that he changed, but the execution is just wonky, and sad. So if a fanfic writer can attempt to fulfill their redemptions to the fullest, then that's good, BUT if the only motivation for redeeming them is to ship them with someone, then what??? I don't understand the appeal of shipping Snape with any of his students. Or any professor x student ship. I get the appeal of Dramione. The rich elite learning from and changing because of a minority character is a trope -- a problematic trope, but a trope nonetheless. But it is problematic, especially if that's the only reason for redeeming Draco. You know what I think might be a slightly better version of Dramione? Drinny, or Draco x Ginny. You still have the dynamic or rich x poor, elitist x blood traitor, but the power dynamic is shifted a bit towards Ginny's favour, since she's much more likely to put Draco in his place. But the actual best version of this ship actually comes from the awfulness that is Cursed Child, and that is Scorpius Malfoy x Rose Weasley. There's the dynamic of someone from a pureblood elitist family with someone from a poor blood traitor family, but much of the problematic elements are reduced because Scorpius is an actually wholesome and nice character. Unfortunately, that also means the appeal is less smh Anyway, the real best ships is Lovebottom
So, when people like incest, grooming, rape, etc that is what's called proshipping. Proshippers defend that since it's fiction, it doesn't affect reality, so all of these immoral and messed up things are then subsequently amoral. The worst part is that proshippers are usually adults, and then they pray on children and teens and make them believe there is similarly nothing wrong with these depictions (which if we're being blunt is more often than not sexualized and fetishised). I honestly truly cannot fathom how people are okay with these ships. Some try to excuse it by saying they were victims, but just because they're a victim doesn't mean they can't participate in harmful practices that hurts other pre-existing victims, and could even lead to knew victims. I don't mean to be on a soap box for this, I just find the tolerance (not pointed at Smarty Pants or this video, all of what he said was great) of proshipping by some to be weird and disconcerting as a victim myself. I could really keep talking on this subject, but I feel there's not much of a point, so I'll stop here. I hope everyone has the day/night they deserve and stay safe.
Having been on the internet for... a substantial amount of time, I can say a lot of these fic trends do trace back to when the fandom mostly comprised of teenage/young adult millennials writing out their fantasies. And knowing the kind of people who hardcore stan Harry Potter today it's not hard to see why these trends have unfortunately stuck... I'm not in the Malfoy/Snape "did nothing wrong" camp but I do enjoy alternate takes on their character without the gross romanticism of them or their actions. I remember seeing a fic once where Draco actually befriended Harry and Ron from the get go and he basically became a fill-in for Hermione but he was still a racist lil prick that Harry and Ron had to re-educate. The fic never finished but it was a nice take on the "Draco in leather pants" trope that didn't make him a full on woobie.

I think the appeal comes from the shipping war from the "Twilight" saga. People like to debate whether or not Bella should end up with Edward or Jacob, and I've seen reaction videos where people have argued that Jacob had a healthier approach to the relationship up until Jacob imprinted on Bella and Edward's daughter (I personally never saw the movies, so I can't attest to anything).
It's not a fandom until the crazed Shippers come out the woodwork. I personally prefer Harry with Hermione and for Ron, I ship him with Luna. For Hagrid, he should end up the the tall lady who's name I don't know. There's 8 movies and a few thousand characters. Who would know every named character in a decade spanning series? Especially after only seeing the franchise twice.

I don't ship Harry x Hermione, but would've been cool to see Hagrid with Maxine (the tall lady) more often. They went on a quest to try getting giants on their side, but failed since the Death Eaters won them over, and killed the leader
100% agree. Can't stand shipping culture when they change the characters entire personality just so they can justify shipping them with someone else. It might as well be an original characters at that point. Snape/Lily, Snape/Harry, Draco/Harry, Draco/Hermione, Voldemort/Literally Anyone, Bellatrix/Anyone, I honestly just can't stand them. People can read what they want and if people enjoys some of these pairings then fine. I just find they don't fit at all with canon and you really need to jump through some pretty crazy hoops to even try and make them work.

Their seems to be a disconnect with some of this stuff, because people will love a ship which based on something that they are completely against in the real world, with the only explanation they give being that it's fiction.
I really believe that the people that write those types of fanfics where these characters who are clearly incompatible, are written to be together. This person clearly doesn't understand complex emotional connections or how they're developed. Mostly it's children who get ahold of certain concepts and are developing sexually that write these things out. That's how I have to understand it because if it's adults writing this type of stuff, my faith in humanity grows dimmer and I didn't think it was possible.

One time I came across a fic called Rons’ Secret. It was absolutely awful and disgusting as hell. Not gonna go into detail but it involved n3croph1lia and b3stial1ty and was possibly the worst thing I think I’ve ever read. That and the blowfly girl stories.
I can understand shipping to a point, I myself am a fan of the idea of Harry and Hermione being a possible couple because of the way the books were written. When I was reading them for the first time, I was so sure that it would be Harry and Hermione. And at times I like to speculate how that might change the story. But I do agree with you on the ships mentioned in this video. I don’t get some of the ships that people come up with in this fandom. Just from my intimate knowledge of the world and the characters, I don’t see how any of these ships could work in any universe, because they require too much on stretching the story or changing the characters to work, and some of them are in a sense disgusting. There are times I love to ship certain non canon pairings, but so long as they can be believable within the context of the story without stretching it or the characters into the realm of disbelief, and are actually healthy relationships. Some of these ships in the video don’t make any sense at best, and are honestly depraved at worst. That’s why I usually don’t get involved in the shipping community too much, I just dip my toes into areas that make sense within the lore.
On the bright side, a lot of ships between adults and underaged characters are written & read by people the same age or younger than the underage character. When you’re twelve, and have a crush on Snape, a fanfiction between 15 year-old Hermione and 50 year-old Snape doesn’t seem extreme at all. As someone who used to read romances with ridiculous agegaps when I was a kid. The people who wrote these will look back in a couple years and cringe hard.

You of course realise a child is fully capable of growing up realising they were wrong right? That just because someone was taught racism, they can grow up and change with experience?
If you take the Harry Potter part out of the title it's still true. People into good romance like characters who make sense as a couple and whose relationships have buildup. Shippers on the other hand think 2 strangers who've just met looking at each other or having sex once means they're in love, think characters wanting to kill each other is somehow sexual tension, are convinced characters who never did, never have and never will meet in a series are meant to be. You also get the shippers who think the actors are the characters and try to force them together in real life. Not even characters being different sexualities stops shippers.
If you dont read the books, i can see why you wouldn't ship Drarry.... i didn't ship them at all in the movies but after the books, i see the mutual obsession. Harry is always staring at Draco for no reason (even when he's just eating his lunch), and Draco is far worse.. Harry is much more obsessed with Draco than with Ginny, whom he barely cares for. She's always on the back burner. But Draco is actually canonically good deep down based off his wand (unicorn core) and in the books Harry canonically forgives and covers for him. They both risk their lives and the lives of the ppl they care the most for one another. It's very really sweet. They have far more chemistry than anyone else whenever they do interact.
Truthfully idgaf what people ship but I can say in fandoms this phenomenon of purifying evil/neutral characters for the sake of romance is prominent and weak af. I don't watch or read HP but it's in every fandom and it always plays the same way. The favorite is usually a villain of some sort and they woobify tf out of that character to a point it's another character. I say do whatever ship you want but for the love or mercy keep the character intact. Why even ship them if so much ends up changed? People can do what they want but I personally don't understand how anyone gets joy out of it. I think this problem has a lot to do with how fandom policing content too. If something is problematic (a troupe, a ship, etc.) people tend to harass the fan creators and sometimes the actual creators. Trying to clean up characters/troupes could be some people's way of avoiding the mob mentality but fandom space used to be so different. If you didn't like something just block or move on unceremoniously. I can't say if that's HP's fandom's issue but a lot of fandoms I've been in tend to have that problem. Purity culture fans still harass the writer for NBC Hannibal because he supports fans shipping whatever they want how they want if that's an indication of anything. It's insane.
The moment people talk about “shipping” I’m fucking out. Nope. Not doing it. What often really makes my skin crawl is how “shipping” fans like to use one toxicity to try and cancel out another. I’m a big fan of Touhou, but a really gross “ship” some fans like is between Remilia (despite being canonically 500 is referred to as a child in universe, and treated like one), and her maid Sakuya (an adult). Apparently, the age gap power imbalance gets cancelled by the employer/employee one. It doesn’t. It just makes it so, so much worse.
Honestly, the [anyone]/Snape ships have never been my jam, but having had actual conversations with people who enjoy that ship, I think some of the criticisms are pretty misguided. Obviously IRL any romantic or sexual relationship between a minor and an adult is horrifying, full stop, but the fact is that it's not uncommon for kids to have crushes on adults, especially teachers, THAT IS WHY (among many other reasons) we have so much emphasis on adults not taking advantage of those feelings. Lots of kids, even kids who know that this sort of thing could never happen IRL in a way that wouldn't be extremely bad and harmful, have crushes on their teachers. And in my experience, Snape fics are pretty much just an outlet for that emotion. When I was a kid in the fandom I hated Snape and didn't really ship him with anyone, but I did wind up talking to people who did, and it was pretty much only teens with crushes on their teachers, writing wish fulfillment for other teens with crushes on their teachers. And honestly, if you've got those feelings and you're trying to process them, fanfic by and for other kids about the most harmless way to accomplish that. (All that said, I haven't been anywhere near that ship in many years, and if it's mostly being written by adults, these same arguments don't apply. But also, I don't think there's a non-creepy way to attempt to determine or police the ages of fanfic authors or readers, so we should probably err on the side of leaving people alone.)
I think your looking at fabrication through to much of a critical lens. Its not supposed to correlate with canon. Thats not the point if fanfiction. The point is to explore possibilities. Draco and Hermione wouldn't work in canon. But its fun to read and write about a forbidden romance.

I hate that I've been aware of this crap for years. The HP Fandom is wild but despite it's size it's pretty tame. Supernatural and other media where incest is cannon is wild and my god watch out for Fandoms with monsters. I'm not talking werewolves and vampires, no, those are basic vanilla stuff. Hm, I don't think lots of you understand phenomenon of fanfiction and what's it's purpose. Fanfics are a free pass to the world you enjoyed reading about. It's self insertion for most part, but also it's a way to express yourself. Wether you like it or not fanfics and whole fan culture is a form of art. Specific, no argument, but art nevertheless. For me personally fanfics were a platform for growth, where at first I had read and written those sorts of works that tried to justify existence of Death Eaters and Voldemort. And no, not because I'm such a terrific racist, but because I, as a kid could not believe that grown-up people can be irrational and stupid enough to mindlessly hate on the other group of people for no reason but their own delusion (yes, I was very naive child). So for me personally the fanfics that justified Draco Malfoy or Severus Snape weren't bigoted talk, they were just fix-it fanfics in which the very same way ficwriters tried to fix potholes, they were fixing what for my perception then seemed a pothole too. And honestly, can you blame me? After all, characterisation of the very same Snape or Malfoy in books and movies are drastically different (in movies much better on my opinion). So if the movie can make Snape into a little bit less of a bully incel and a little more of a tragic misunderstood hero, why can't fanfic make him a good guy whose dreams come true? Back to the point the very same fanfiction made me understand that I was initially wrong about my understanding of for example Snape's character. When in movies (from which I mostly took knowledge of the Harry Potter universe) he really was portrayed as dark brooding hero, in the books he was more of a dickhead, and quite a few fanfics let me realise who he really are. Anywho, yes, shipping is weird, but it's also fun when you don't think about it much (and sometimes you can stumble upon an actual masterpiece that way better than 50% of rubbish printed our day to bookstore's shelves
Sorry, not sorry I unironically read Voldemort x Harry. In fact, that's pretty much all I read from the HP fandom. I don't ship them in a romantic way, though, I absolutely cannot stand tomarry (young, handsome Tom) or stories where Voldemort regains his handsome features so he can be romantized. For me, the appeal is the psychological torture, exploration of deeply problematic things like narcissistic manipulation or Stockholm Syndrome, or just straight-up body horror. To me, Voldemort's obsession with Harry in the books already reads deeply stalkerish, obsessed, and semi pedo, so why not lean into it and make it more adult? On the other hand, I hate Snape x Harry. It's just weird.

Shipping of Dumbledore and Potter is. I guess everyone did in their mind at least once. Harry is key to Dumbledore's lock. They're the two major characters and both are very natural together. In my headcanon Dumbledore always romantically loved Harry and if the story flew naturallx and all happened more as in our world, Dumbledore would teach Harry Potter about friendship, love, romance, intimity and physical love. That would perfectly reflect boardinng schools environment, where such relationships are very common, rather rulle, than excep1tion. Our teacher of Math was such sweet Dumbledore and I had the lucky, to Help him long into the night, we get accustomed and to know each other. Later we really deeply loved each other and we had a lot of times to spend under bedsheets together behind locked doors ❤❤❤❤❤❤

A LOT of fanfics are written by teenagers. Often they are using the younger character as a stand in for themselves & they don't see anything wrong with the age gap/power imbalance.

This is such a pet peeve for me as well!! Fan fictions treat harry like a blank slate and not a character with his own personality too! They’ll make him really submissive just so that they can pair him with Draco even though Harry’s actually really feisty. I don’t get the point of writing a fanfiction if you’re just going to change everything about the characters in order to force them together!! I don’t mind Draco and Harry as a ship, it does kind of work since they’re both so obsessed with each other but people won’t work with the chemistry that has been provided for them and instead make it so that Harry gets pregnant with Draco’s baby, like NO 😭😭. Another reason this pisses me off is that when a ship is gay, particularly two men, they will actively force one of the male characters to act really feminine, like dramatically feminine and it comes across as really homophobic that you can’t have two men in a relationship without making one if them ‘the woman’

I don't know if you read the books or only watched the movies. If you read the books and still think that ron and hermoine don't fit together then fair. But if you only watched the movies then i highly recommend you to read the books, bc in the books ron and hermoine are a much better ship and also are definitely meant for each other. In the books both hermoine and harry laugh at the idea of being together bc they are like borther/sister (if you think that harra+hermoine are better which people who don't like ron+hermoine a lot of time think). Generally the books are also a lot more detailed and the characters differ a lot to the movies, specifically ron and ginny, who were properly character assassinated in the movies, leading to a lot of fans rather leaning into harry+hermoine rather than harry+ginny and ron+hermoine.

Out of the 2 incarnetions of this ship Tomarry is the more popular i think, the fics for this one always tend to fall under two major camps: time travel fix-its where Harry is send back in time for whatever reason and decides to try and stop Tom from becoming Voldemort or Timeline mergers where Tom and Harry's crews go to Hogwarts together.
The Harrymort ones are a bit more questionable....lots of stockholm syndrome and weird sex slave stuff as was mentioned in the video, there are some in wich Voldemort manages to come back to life when Harry is an auror becuz of "secret 8th horocrux" or "Harry became master of Death while still having a part of Tom's soul im him, so he also counts as a master" most of the time they boil down to Harry having an internal crisis over the idea of catching any sense of feelings for his family murderer.
When it comes to Voldy's appeareance, only a few brave souls stick to the emanciated and skeletal snakeface image, sometines it gets written as it being a glamour he puts to create more fear or Worntail somehow botching the ritual to bring him back.

As a gay man I find it weird that teenage girls seem to love writing problematic gay relationships. I mean why ship harry with his bully or his bully teacher, why don't they ship him with Ron or Cedric as often? Same with Stiles and Derek, why not Stiles and Scott?
Hot take: I actually think Drarry works in a post-war world in a weird way. I think there's an appeal to it for some fans, because it fully shows Harry's acceptance that the world is gray, not black and white. Draco is a horrible person, but he's also a child/teenager that grew up under fascist and racist parents and a fascist and racist high-class world. Doesn't really make it right, but like, he has no other role models. Like imagine growing up your whole life thinking this is okay behavior, a 11 year old raised in that environment isn't going to question or act out of what he's been told his whole life. If anyone can be rehabilitated in this story, it is by far Draco. I even think it honestly elevates the story more if we get that exploration, because Harry Potter....it isn't actually that gray, it is very black and white despite all of Rowling's attempts or excuses. But having a character work through the terrible fascist and racist things he learned as a kid and learn to not do that would help remedy that in a real way, and show a very real side to how these systems in reality. I think it'd be cool to see Harry learn the power of love/compassion even towards those he used to hate, when it's justified, really hammering home his arc of realizing the world isn't black and white. It'd be cool to see Draco being a microcosm of the larger wizarding world's attempts to deradicalize. Now, I personally greatly dislike Draco, I actually think he is very obnoxious and pathetic and not a "bad boy" at all (all of that flew out the window the minute Hermione punched him in the face and he started crying for his father). But I think it'd be cool to see this, and honestly, Drarry has such toxic gay vibes it's fun to explore, even if I'm not sure I'd ever have them get together. Not really sure if I ship Drarry the same way a lot of people do, but, that's my take on why people would and reasons I can get behind.
My only problem with Drarry is that all of Harry’s personality gets thrown out the window to make him submissive to Draco in most of the fandom writing. It could honestly still work with their actual personalities.

Meh...as far as I know, in canon, they never really became friends after the war, no less romantic partners, but they were on speaking terms. If I were to stretch it, I'd still see them as friends and just friends. A pretty unexpected friendship too, considering their upbringings and who they were during the war. And also the fact that Harry has Ginny! And to a less fleshed-out extent, Draco has Astoria.
But if you really had to ship Drarry...the least you can do it with their post-war versions. Draco and Harry being together as they were teens is simply just...not okay...and swings pretty far from canon. It was incredibly toxic, unhealthy, emotionally and physically abusive, almost fatal in one case...yikes.
I usually like to stick to canon or what is established by canon when it comes to fictional relationships. If I were to ship something non-canon, I will be specific about it so as not to diverge too far from canon, and/or I have a really good reason to (still based on established canon).

I think when it comes to Drarry the movie version of Harry and Draco just don't come off like they hate eachother the way they did in the books idk that's at least why I think Drarry is the way it is.

There's alot that's changed in the movie to begin with making Draco more forgivable then he is in the books. Same thing happened with Snape.
Sense there's this huge disconnect between the movie watchers and the book readers you often get characters change poorly or lean into better qualities.
Like I think movie Ron is the reason he gets nothing in fan content sense Hermione in the movies took some of his lines. So sense most people who only watched the movies or watch it before reading the books don't know how he is in the books and write him off cause the movies mainly show his bad qualities for the most part.
With Hermione it's probably the yaoi effect. (Context not all gay ships are like this but happens quite alot in fanfics its why Ginny is always bashed on or "crazy" in them)
It's where a gay pairing is so popular but they have to write a villian or a way for the og love interest to not be involved with the protag take kh for instance.
In the early kingdom hearts fanfics people made Kairi a love obsessed crazy girl who liked Sora.
Or take Twilight (hate to bring it up but) people who shipped Jacob and Edward would write Bella that way. (I mean like she isn't really that rememberable out of protags but still)
I think there's only a few fanfics where Drarry doesn't bash on Harry's friends.
The only few ships I enjoy is like Luna and Harry because I just think their cute. Or Ginny and Neville cause she's full of confidence and he needs someone who'd lift him up and believe in him.
Idk I just vibed with these I also like Luna and Neville only to find out it wasn't canon at somepoint which sucked.
And lastly the reason I brought up drarry is because their are some really well written stories on it yeah it takes a new approach to things and changes how characters act sometimes but, for the most part keep things relatively the same and if there's no character bashing that's a win.
Long story short fanfic culture straight up is all emotional and biased its why some characters are changed to fic the writers way of seeing them and letting some resentment or dislike towards a character shown. Shipping will always be like that probably it's unfortunate but true.
I think it’s fun to ship characters as long as there are no weird age gaps involving kids or incest

I love redemption and second chances. I'm all for redeeming characters like Draco and Snape. Draco was just a traumatized kid, and Snape -- well, if you read closely, the idea for his redemption is there, and there were moments like him telling someone off for using the M slur that seems to attempt to show that he changed, but the execution is just wonky, and sad.
So if a fanfic writer can attempt to fulfill their redemptions to the fullest, then that's good, BUT if the only motivation for redeeming them is to ship them with someone, then what???

I get the appeal of Dramione. The rich elite learning from and changing because of a minority character is a trope -- a problematic trope, but a trope nonetheless. But it is problematic, especially if that's the only reason for redeeming Draco. You know what I think might be a slightly better version of Dramione? Drinny, or Draco x Ginny. You still have the dynamic or rich x poor, elitist x blood traitor, but the power dynamic is shifted a bit towards Ginny's favour, since she's much more likely to put Draco in his place. But the actual best version of this ship actually comes from the awfulness that is Cursed Child, and that is Scorpius Malfoy x Rose Weasley. There's the dynamic of someone from a pureblood elitist family with someone from a poor blood traitor family, but much of the problematic elements are reduced because Scorpius is an actually wholesome and nice character. Unfortunately, that also means the appeal is less smh

So, when people like incest, grooming, rape, etc that is what's called proshipping. Proshippers defend that since it's fiction, it doesn't affect reality, so all of these immoral and messed up things are then subsequently amoral. The worst part is that proshippers are usually adults, and then they pray on children and teens and make them believe there is similarly nothing wrong with these depictions (which if we're being blunt is more often than not sexualized and fetishised).
I honestly truly cannot fathom how people are okay with these ships. Some try to excuse it by saying they were victims, but just because they're a victim doesn't mean they can't participate in harmful practices that hurts other pre-existing victims, and could even lead to knew victims.
I don't mean to be on a soap box for this, I just find the tolerance (not pointed at Smarty Pants or this video, all of what he said was great) of proshipping by some to be weird and disconcerting as a victim myself.
I could really keep talking on this subject, but I feel there's not much of a point, so I'll stop here. I hope everyone has the day/night they deserve and stay safe.
Having been on the internet for... a substantial amount of time, I can say a lot of these fic trends do trace back to when the fandom mostly comprised of teenage/young adult millennials writing out their fantasies. And knowing the kind of people who hardcore stan Harry Potter today it's not hard to see why these trends have unfortunately stuck...
I'm not in the Malfoy/Snape "did nothing wrong" camp but I do enjoy alternate takes on their character without the gross romanticism of them or their actions. I remember seeing a fic once where Draco actually befriended Harry and Ron from the get go and he basically became a fill-in for Hermione but he was still a racist lil prick that Harry and Ron had to re-educate. The fic never finished but it was a nice take on the "Draco in leather pants" trope that didn't make him a full on woobie.

Seriously though, I write post-war Draco redemption myself, but I have him paired with the person who becomes his wife in canon, and I don't have her "change" him. He changes himself, because that's what a redemption is. He shouldn't need someone else to "fix" him. If Draco coild only be "foxed" by another character (specifically a romantic interest), what does that say about Draco's own capability of being redeemed? Similarly, making a character like Ron look bad and dragging him down as some terrible horrible person, just to make Draco "look good". If you have to make a character look bad just to put Draco on a pedistal, that is NOT giving Draco any sort of redemption arc.

I think the appeal comes from the shipping war from the "Twilight" saga. People like to debate whether or not Bella should end up with Edward or Jacob, and I've seen reaction videos where people have argued that Jacob had a healthier approach to the relationship up until Jacob imprinted on Bella and Edward's daughter (I personally never saw the movies, so I can't attest to anything).

It's not a fandom until the crazed Shippers come out the woodwork. I personally prefer Harry with Hermione and for Ron, I ship him with Luna. For Hagrid, he should end up the the tall lady who's name I don't know. There's 8 movies and a few thousand characters. Who would know every named character in a decade spanning series? Especially after only seeing the franchise twice.

100% agree. Can't stand shipping culture when they change the characters entire personality just so they can justify shipping them with someone else. It might as well be an original characters at that point. Snape/Lily, Snape/Harry, Draco/Harry, Draco/Hermione, Voldemort/Literally Anyone, Bellatrix/Anyone, I honestly just can't stand them. People can read what they want and if people enjoys some of these pairings then fine. I just find they don't fit at all with canon and you really need to jump through some pretty crazy hoops to even try and make them work.

Their seems to be a disconnect with some of this stuff, because people will love a ship which based on something that they are completely against in the real world, with the only explanation they give being that it's fiction.
I really believe that the people that write those types of fanfics where these characters who are clearly incompatible, are written to be together. This person clearly doesn't understand complex emotional connections or how they're developed. Mostly it's children who get ahold of certain concepts and are developing sexually that write these things out. That's how I have to understand it because if it's adults writing this type of stuff, my faith in humanity grows dimmer and I didn't think it was possible.

One time I came across a fic called Rons’ Secret. It was absolutely awful and disgusting as hell. Not gonna go into detail but it involved n3croph1lia and b3stial1ty and was possibly the worst thing I think I’ve ever read. That and the blowfly girl stories.
I can understand shipping to a point, I myself am a fan of the idea of Harry and Hermione being a possible couple because of the way the books were written. When I was reading them for the first time, I was so sure that it would be Harry and Hermione. And at times I like to speculate how that might change the story. But I do agree with you on the ships mentioned in this video. I don’t get some of the ships that people come up with in this fandom. Just from my intimate knowledge of the world and the characters, I don’t see how any of these ships could work in any universe, because they require too much on stretching the story or changing the characters to work, and some of them are in a sense disgusting. There are times I love to ship certain non canon pairings, but so long as they can be believable within the context of the story without stretching it or the characters into the realm of disbelief, and are actually healthy relationships. Some of these ships in the video don’t make any sense at best, and are honestly depraved at worst. That’s why I usually don’t get involved in the shipping community too much, I just dip my toes into areas that make sense within the lore.

On the bright side, a lot of ships between adults and underaged characters are written & read by people the same age or younger than the underage character. When you’re twelve, and have a crush on Snape, a fanfiction between 15 year-old Hermione and 50 year-old Snape doesn’t seem extreme at all. As someone who used to read romances with ridiculous agegaps when I was a kid. The people who wrote these will look back in a couple years and cringe hard.

If you take the Harry Potter part out of the title it's still true. People into good romance like characters who make sense as a couple and whose relationships have buildup. Shippers on the other hand think 2 strangers who've just met looking at each other or having sex once means they're in love, think characters wanting to kill each other is somehow sexual tension, are convinced characters who never did, never have and never will meet in a series are meant to be. You also get the shippers who think the actors are the characters and try to force them together in real life. Not even characters being different sexualities stops shippers.

If you dont read the books, i can see why you wouldn't ship Drarry.... i didn't ship them at all in the movies but after the books, i see the mutual obsession. Harry is always staring at Draco for no reason (even when he's just eating his lunch), and Draco is far worse.. Harry is much more obsessed with Draco than with Ginny, whom he barely cares for. She's always on the back burner.
But Draco is actually canonically good deep down based off his wand (unicorn core) and in the books Harry canonically forgives and covers for him. They both risk their lives and the lives of the ppl they care the most for one another. It's very really sweet. They have far more chemistry than anyone else whenever they do interact.
Truthfully idgaf what people ship but I can say in fandoms this phenomenon of purifying evil/neutral characters for the sake of romance is prominent and weak af. I don't watch or read HP but it's in every fandom and it always plays the same way. The favorite is usually a villain of some sort and they woobify tf out of that character to a point it's another character. I say do whatever ship you want but for the love or mercy keep the character intact. Why even ship them if so much ends up changed? People can do what they want but I personally don't understand how anyone gets joy out of it.
I think this problem has a lot to do with how fandom policing content too. If something is problematic (a troupe, a ship, etc.) people tend to harass the fan creators and sometimes the actual creators. Trying to clean up characters/troupes could be some people's way of avoiding the mob mentality but fandom space used to be so different. If you didn't like something just block or move on unceremoniously. I can't say if that's HP's fandom's issue but a lot of fandoms I've been in tend to have that problem. Purity culture fans still harass the writer for NBC Hannibal because he supports fans shipping whatever they want how they want if that's an indication of anything. It's insane.

What often really makes my skin crawl is how “shipping” fans like to use one toxicity to try and cancel out another. I’m a big fan of Touhou, but a really gross “ship” some fans like is between Remilia (despite being canonically 500 is referred to as a child in universe, and treated like one), and her maid Sakuya (an adult). Apparently, the age gap power imbalance gets cancelled by the employer/employee one. It doesn’t. It just makes it so, so much worse.
Honestly, the [anyone]/Snape ships have never been my jam, but having had actual conversations with people who enjoy that ship, I think some of the criticisms are pretty misguided.
Obviously IRL any romantic or sexual relationship between a minor and an adult is horrifying, full stop, but the fact is that it's not uncommon for kids to have crushes on adults, especially teachers, THAT IS WHY (among many other reasons) we have so much emphasis on adults not taking advantage of those feelings.
Lots of kids, even kids who know that this sort of thing could never happen IRL in a way that wouldn't be extremely bad and harmful, have crushes on their teachers. And in my experience, Snape fics are pretty much just an outlet for that emotion. When I was a kid in the fandom I hated Snape and didn't really ship him with anyone, but I did wind up talking to people who did, and it was pretty much only teens with crushes on their teachers, writing wish fulfillment for other teens with crushes on their teachers. And honestly, if you've got those feelings and you're trying to process them, fanfic by and for other kids about the most harmless way to accomplish that.
(All that said, I haven't been anywhere near that ship in many years, and if it's mostly being written by adults, these same arguments don't apply. But also, I don't think there's a non-creepy way to attempt to determine or police the ages of fanfic authors or readers, so we should probably err on the side of leaving people alone.)

Hm, I don't think lots of you understand phenomenon of fanfiction and what's it's purpose.
Fanfics are a free pass to the world you enjoyed reading about. It's self insertion for most part, but also it's a way to express yourself. Wether you like it or not fanfics and whole fan culture is a form of art. Specific, no argument, but art nevertheless.
For me personally fanfics were a platform for growth, where at first I had read and written those sorts of works that tried to justify existence of Death Eaters and Voldemort. And no, not because I'm such a terrific racist, but because I, as a kid could not believe that grown-up people can be irrational and stupid enough to mindlessly hate on the other group of people for no reason but their own delusion (yes, I was very naive child). So for me personally the fanfics that justified Draco Malfoy or Severus Snape weren't bigoted talk, they were just fix-it fanfics in which the very same way ficwriters tried to fix potholes, they were fixing what for my perception then seemed a pothole too.
And honestly, can you blame me? After all, characterisation of the very same Snape or Malfoy in books and movies are drastically different (in movies much better on my opinion). So if the movie can make Snape into a little bit less of a bully incel and a little more of a tragic misunderstood hero, why can't fanfic make him a good guy whose dreams come true?
Back to the point the very same fanfiction made me understand that I was initially wrong about my understanding of for example Snape's character. When in movies (from which I mostly took knowledge of the Harry Potter universe) he really was portrayed as dark brooding hero, in the books he was more of a dickhead, and quite a few fanfics let me realise who he really are.
Anywho, yes, shipping is weird, but it's also fun when you don't think about it much (and sometimes you can stumble upon an actual masterpiece that way better than 50% of rubbish printed our day to bookstore's shelves

Sorry, not sorry I unironically read Voldemort x Harry. In fact, that's pretty much all I read from the HP fandom. I don't ship them in a romantic way, though, I absolutely cannot stand tomarry (young, handsome Tom) or stories where Voldemort regains his handsome features so he can be romantized. For me, the appeal is the psychological torture, exploration of deeply problematic things like narcissistic manipulation or Stockholm Syndrome, or just straight-up body horror. To me, Voldemort's obsession with Harry in the books already reads deeply stalkerish, obsessed, and semi pedo, so why not lean into it and make it more adult? On the other hand, I hate Snape x Harry. It's just weird.

In my headcanon Dumbledore always romantically loved Harry and if the story flew naturallx and all happened more as in our world, Dumbledore would teach Harry Potter about friendship, love, romance, intimity and physical love.
