It happened around 1955 when Elvis/Bill Hailey introduced country music elements mixed with Blues. Rufus Thomas was right about that. Elvis recorded rock & roll before Chuck did. Elvis had more hits on the R&B charts than Chuck. I also don't think chuck's voice is all that great, but he did have songwriting & guitar playing going for him. Elvis didn't write, but his interpretation of music was lightyears beyond them all.

I played piano for Chuck one night in Raleigh NC back in the late 80s..he hit on my wife..and she told him she was married to his piano player..he smiled and told her "He's Good!

He also created the first youth groupie song ('Sweet Little Sixteen'), and the very first youth protest song ('School Daze'). The place was full of 'mods' all moaning about this 'rocker' appearing - within 5 minutes they were ripping up the seats - wouldn't let him off the stage. We were all trying to learn and play his chops. There was one passage in his instrumental 'Liverpool Drive' that we were waiting for, to see how he did it - when he got to it, he was leaning over to talk to someone in the audience!
