John's neighbors arent very observant people. How on earth do you not realize the person your talking to is shy and doesn't want to be around people!?!?
It’s so sad that he was tortured so much, his own brain split and became his mother. At least that’s what John believes. He truly thinks emma is just like his mother. I don’t know tho. I think emma is the part of him that he needed. The part to do all the things his mother did for him, and instead of him doing it, a woman had to given the severe trauma. So he just became that person. I think emma may have wanted her own life, but honestly I think she protected John. Until he started panicking and getting in her way. Then she felt she had the right to defend herself. Meanwhile I think he just believes any woman could be like his mother, and therefore doesn’t trust emma in the least with anything other than domestic chores at home
Murphy is such an amazing actor. I've been a big fan since 28 days later and Batman Begins. i know his career started long before that but im an american. He really is great at shit like this and as Oppenheimer. It cannot be easy to play such complex, haunted man. Especially at multiple points in his very monumental life.
This is such an odd movie. Its so obvious he is dressed as a woman and unbelievable that no one would immediately realize this fact. Him and “his wife” have the exact same facial structure which makeup and hair cant hide at all.
I didn't notice immediately in the recap which i was only half paying attention to. And the vid is like 1" x 2" when held that way so... And we don't hear them speak, which would be the biggest giveaway, IMO. But ppl back then would not believe it even possible that one person acted as both the man and the woman. So maybe it's like selective ignorance? Idk it's a movie
@@burtan2000 it may have been more believable, but the wife/husband was interviewed multiple times and they never even had the other characters question it
This movie was so good. To be honest i didnt think that i would be that interested because i don watch movies that much but this, this was something else. The details and production was perfect i hope that you keep doing recaps on movies like this. Amazing video keep it up!
Since he fathered a child I am inclined to believe John is the real one and Emma is an alternative identity created by his mind to suppress abusive memories of his childhood
In reality it's a double consciousness where the original self feels unsafe and the other is powerful abusive identity. 😢 It's common in the real world now. Where person can live as two separate persons in one body . It's always come from a childhood abuses either by parent or by the child guardian.😢😢
I'm not sure why this has such a low rating. It's not perfect, or a mind-blowing experience or something, but I thought it was a really interesting story, well-acted, especially with a wonderful performance by Cillian Murphy. It's sort of a Psycho-like story, without ever venturing into suspense or horror.
Hello! I've stumbled upon your channel and it's been my favorite ever since. Thank you for always bringing excellent recaps and I really like your choice of movies! I hope you know that your work is greatly appreciated! Have a nice day 😊
I don’t think John ever grew up. John is just a child (always buying chocolate and baseball cards, acts shy and childish, is cared for by emma like a young man). But emma’s is a grown woman. I honestly don’t think emma is like her mother at all. I think she’s John’s protector. I think because John is still just his child self, who got tortured, he doesn’t trust any woman. Especially not one who can use his body without his permission. It causes conflict. Emma wants nothing but a normal life. I also think the entire reason she wants a kid is to do the OPPOSITE of what his mother did. I think emma wants to do things the right way. But John is so hurt and broken he can’t trust her to not hurt the child. It’s all so sad. If they’d just been able to talk to anyone about what they went thru they could’ve gotten help to trust each other and work together. I think emma could be a great mother, and I think John would love having a child to play with and love on like he hadn’t been.
Being a victim of his own mother torture and carrying that heavy burden for a long time. Something that shouldn't be happened to anyone. But changing his identity makes his/her life in a positive way. But every time he/she remember his childhood, makes him/her wonder who he/she is. That battle is mental not physical. He's victim of domestic abuse and the lesson of this movie
Actually, it doesn't exist. At some point it was reported in newspapers, and was henceforth used in fiction, but it turns out it was all a mistake. The anecdote goes something like this: two american therapists reported having found people with this disorder, but what was odd was that no other place in the world had found cases. An in-dept investigation was conducted on the studies. In the end, it was discovered to be malpractice from the psych ward staff and the doctors conducting these experiments. They lead paranoid schizophrenia cases into thinking they had another personality taking over and forgetting all about it. (A lo alien abduction. It was possible because those people are very easy to convince of stuff, and there's such a thing as cathatonia positivity.) Hence it was the doctors unwittingly making up a condition which in fact didn't exist. That's what I have been told by somebody who actually studied psychology.
@@Ireekofcocacola And they act entirely differently. I'm using that to try to make it make sense that they don't realize the two personalities are inhabiting the same body.
Man I felt bad at the end. Ugh. But decently executed, I just don’t understand why she had to merk a dude, she course just set the place on fire with clothes stuffed with pillows instead…
This is my understanding as per this recap. John was raised by his abusive mother. Though he suffered a lot because of her, he still loved her coz she took care of him and raised him. So when she died, he missed her and since his mind was not all healthy(because of all the abuses he endured), it easily broke and created a character like his mother to care for him.

I’m confused at what does being an American had anything to do with that
@@Thaisc67the actor isn’t American so that is why the knowledge of his previous work may not be known.
Why do you Americans always refer to everything as Sh#t? You have no idea how off putting and crass it is.
"The Wind That Shakes The Barley" was the first thing I ever saw him in. I think it was one of his earlier roles. Amazing film.
28 days later still my fav 💯💯
Why the hell did I feel anxious for Emma/John, And was worried about her/he getting caught.
Because the fallout of them getting found out would have been really messy and awkward. It's empathy

It’s called Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly known as Multiple Personality Disorder
Actually, it doesn't exist. At some point it was reported in newspapers, and was henceforth used in fiction, but it turns out it was all a mistake.
