I wonder if you could convince the scammers to solve captchas, as a "security measure"? Say that there are all sorts of automated messages nowadays so insist on sending them a captcha with each email, and insist that they include the solved captcha in each of their messages back to you. Try to get them to solve as many as you can.
    Bonus ideas:
    (1) At some point, insist that a correct captcha is incorrect, and insist they solve two additional ones as an additional security measure.
    (2) Claim that you've just learned that the type of captcha you've been using is weak, and upgrade to different captchas.
    (3) Send a broken image (file not found, or something), misunderstand and become angry when the scammer won't give you an answer.
    (4) The final captcha you send could have a solution of something like "Idiot Scammer"

In cases like these it may be a good idea to speak to the bank and get the account shut off temporarily or control temporarily given to another family member whilst you either work out a way to prove that it's a scam, have an intervention, get them to see a therapist or move them in with a family member/ vise versa who can cut their communications off etc. When I was younger, my mothers bank account was temporarily shut down by my grandma/her mother (after taking out a good chunk of money for me to feed my sister and I for a bit) because she was drinking herself into severe debt, then it was given back to her after starting rehab. It took about a year and a half of working two jobs rather than several years for her to get back out of it. So if you think someone you love is going into a downward spiral financially, see if the bank can do anything or if they don't have a credit card, take all the money out so they can't spend it and give them an allowance or look after them because they will be grateful afterwards.

I've been messing with scammers by setting up fresh email accounts through tor using tails, so in terms of safety pretty sure I'm in the clear.
Latest one I'm dealing with has some guy pretending to be a dying heiress so over the last 2 weeks I've been trying to convince her, her lawyer and her accountant (probably all the same person) to join my cult of unitology.
Also had another one where they kept asking for phone numbers so I'd look up random dominoes chains and put their numbers on

@pororoca farm They do. If live chat customer support can do it (and they do), not-so-live email scammers also can. The sad reality is that this doesn't *really* preoccupy scammers, wasting a couple minutes of their time per email at best, unless people do it en masse, but it does disrupt their peace of mind and at least we get a kick out of it in their expense.
