+Roberto Blake Great work bro! Its interesting timing for me to see this video, and because of the reinforcement I will be starting my own channel very soon! BIG thanks for the inspiration and I'll have to give you a HUGE S/O for it when I do in fact create it!
Hi Roberto. *So, you're basically saying here...that if you wanna grow your personal brand, you gotta be a [youtube] educator?* Because, @5:10 you're basically saying no one will initiate a specific search for you [your brand]. Only if you create value, like creating a tutorial such as "why should you hire a logo designer"- then that's the way you will draw attention/viewers/clients. But, what if you're, say, a photographer? Not an educator? You are not gonna create videos teaching folks how to shoot. How can you still establish yourself as an authority, and not in a cognitive/informative way, but rather in a creative/stylistic way? [as in "this guy really knows how to create good images! we should hire him for our next campaign"].
Roberto Blake My wife just gave you the biggest compliment after watching the show. She said you are clear and articulate and really know what you are talking about. She found the episode to be very informative and appreciates your genuine desire to help others and positive vibe. Dang! #CreateAwesome
I agree. Thank all of you for putting such awesome info gems out into the world. I'm a cake designer, by way of architect, by way of commercial art and it's amazing how the design concepts and processes translate through those very different channels. Thanks again!
I'm going to do «futurism» here... At 24:00 you ask for pointers... I'll guess you guys will hit 1 million subscribers in «The Futur»... :D Congrats on the million again, but this content still as lots of value, despite «we all were younger»...
Roberto is such a great speaker. I watched a few of his videos, so my face lit up when I saw that you guys did a video with him. Once again, great video! Thank you for sharing.
I'm a designer that's been following both Chris and Roberto since about 2018, I started ramping up my channel every week with 3 new videos and broke the 1000 mark back in July. I'm now almost at 2,000 and my goal is to be at 10k by the end of my second year, thank you guys for the inspiration I've learned a lot from you both.
So valuable. I was really encouraged to listen to Robert talk about his journey of self education. Robert speaks like a sniper. On point, to the point, all the time.
although ive never commented in none of Roberto Blake's videos, ive gotta say, the true power of people who are in the same area is determination/passion and positivity and this he has conveyed giving his followers more courage and truly inspiring them alot... i am one of them. thanks alot for your videos Roberto, keep creating awesome videos! :)
This was motivational on so many levels. The most beneficial part for me is how Roberto repeats his main points and builds on those ideas. He is solidifying his message and that is huge for someone like me.
Really this is one of the best interviews I've seen in a long time, Roberto so on point with his breakdowns of the essentials of personal branding and marketing online overall. Great work guys thanks
OK, this is wild. TH-cam actually suggested a Futur video to me a couple of weeks ago because of my obsession watching Roberto Blake videos recently. Glad I found both channels and it is cool to see this from 3 years ago after you both have made huge strides in growing your communities. Congratulations to you both!
"Value, creates value..." This is one of the most important thing that I have learned from school and working professionally and something that needs to be understood by everyone not just designers. #theprocess #takeashot
Thanks Chris Do, Jose & Roberto! There is so much knowledge here in this video. Thank you for sharing. I truly believe in that same philosophy too. Value creates Value. Awesome video!
This was awesome. I'm very much a introvert when it comes to cameras, so might have a go at the whole podcast thing. WOOOO!! Create something awesome today!!!
You guys are so entertaining and asked some really interesting questions! Going to continue to watch your channel. Look forward to more great videos. Thanks!

great stuff right here, as expected to Roberto Blake, really really inspiring guy, i watched every single videos of his. and i learned a lot. good job guys...
I feel like I just lack a sufficient level of self-awareness and passion to develop a personal brand and honestly I lack a depth of knowledge in anything to really demonstrate my value in any field. It's a good point that everyone starts at zero, that's pretty much where I am (even though I should be much farther ahead at my age), but I've always been too scattered to really grow in a particular direction.
cxa011500 that's being brutally honest but I think you need to give yourself more credit. We often forget the gifts we have cause what we know doesn't seem special to us. How about you try helping someone? You'll be surprised how much you know.
I have been seeing Roberto's videos and Skool Network videos for months now, and only now found out even they collaborated....this is awesome!! I would really like to see a discussion between you guys (Skool Network, Roberto) and Will Patterson, and also Aaron Draplin maybe.
Chad Solberg yup! I've got a few other book reviews coming out but I'll be shouting out ***** and the book trilogy in social coming up, as tie in to how to execute on personal branding across the Creative Services industry.
I took a branding class in college, and I struggled with it. I have the technical skill, but it was hard for me to come up with a simple design that really grasped what the company was about. Now as a professional I shy away from branding when people ask. I really want to strengthen my branding skills, because that's what most people want. I figured I would start with myself for practice. What I bring to the table is adaptability and a blend of skills (Illustration, Graphic Design, Comic Art, Typography) Any tips for taking the core values of my brand, and coming up with a solid symbol?
Your Contents are amazing! The more videos I watch, the more interested i get and the more i learn about new things :D just wanted to say thanks and keep on sharing! so my answers to your questions, Jose is more obnoxious i think... xD kidding :D you guys are amazing! and i think my challenges so now is I still haven't found my identity, like what really sets me apart from other artists/ designer and another thing is money and time i think, still don't have the budget to buy the essentials i need in creating stuff. and there still so much like i'm somewhat in the middle of being and introvert/extrovert (depends on the day lol) and lastly when i start something i tend to not stick to it (i realize it with myself just now) ei just want to share my thoughts hehe thanks for reading if your reading!
In case Roberto doesn't see this.... Seems like Roberto basically said here...that *if you wanna grow your personal brand, you gotta be a [youtube] educator?* Because, @5:10 he's basically saying no one will initiate a specific search for you [your brand]. Just seemed like Roberto's way is to go his way+the FUTUR's way. To grow your brand by being online educators. And that is not for everyone. Not everyone teaches. Not everyone likes to be filmed...
Love the content of this video but I have to say, when Jose said "Princess Mononoke over here" I almost spilled my coffee over my Macbook! That comment killed me
Really good advice, awesome plans and fission for a graphic designer to start building and finding your place. My problem with building a personal brand is getting something creative that feels good enough. I start with a concept (logo, slogan, choice of witch way to go), but then it does not feel good enough. As if im much more strict or anal about what i do or design for myself as a brand, than for some one else (NOT that i do not care for what i give others!). As if i get blind/ blank when it comes to myself! Any tips will be appreciated. Thanks for your effort and time on making the videos. Kind regards, JPDiamond.
Jean-Pierre Nel designing for yourself is always the hardest. This is why companies hire consultants to help them. It comes from not being objective. One way to solve that is to write down your brand attributes, define your customers and then work from there. It's an objective goal vs. a subjective one. Hope that helps.
Thank you guys..this is so inspiring in my country we are quite left behind in terms of positive culture like this as we are often shy and a bit reserve on our thoughts... Anyway, Could you guys share with the best and affordable setup to personal broadcast my coaching video.. Luv to hear from you guys soon. Thanks.
The best equipment is the one you already own. If you have an iPhone shoot on that. Use an app called Filmic ($10) which will give you more manual controls over exposure, focus, etc... Get a small phone adaptor and mount it to a tripod or stand to keep the video stable. The key will be to get good audio. I suggest using the earbuds you already own, or purchasing a separate lapel mic you can buy on Amazon for $10. Of course, higher quality mics will give you better results, but if you're on a budget this will work just fine. Use lighting from a window and you should be set. I hope this is the question are you were asking, if not, ask again and I'll try to answer it.
This video was really good and very helpful. While I was listening I thought about what I really want to do. Even though I've been taking graphic design courses lately. The thing I really enjoy doing the most is drawing, especially drawing jazz musicians and music themes. That's what I really want to do and I'm passionate about Jazz music. And I want to be able to help people, especially like me (baby boomers) realize their dreams. How much would you charge to personally help me find my brand and other things that will help me find my audience and clients? My budget is rather small and I know you can't always help me for free. Thank you for your help
Hi, awesome stuff u guys share everytime. I m an indian and run my design agency in india. I have a question. My english is not that great and i m bad in speaking English. If i want to start my youtube channel, What should i do to express my views on TH-cam video. Is it advisable to speak in mu native (Hindi) language?
Hi guys, Roberto Blake I believe there's a moment You co-oporate and the moment You "compete" with other graphic designers. The moment You start as a graphic designer, is the time You have to help yourself more than the others, build a brand, spread your work, get clients, recomendations...etc. The moment You have all that (for example, Roberto Blake) You can "worry" about helping and co-oporate with other designers. Depending of the person who is a graphic designer, if You show them a work You did You will get hundreads of different opinions. And if You are smart enought You will not ask for their opinion, because in the end of the day, is the client who You have to please.
So when I talk about "competing" I'm both being literal (in my case) and speaking to a mentality. The mentality of someone who "competes" is very different than someone who doesn't. For theme everything is comparative analysis instead of being self aware. One of the advantages I have is that I'm a bit neurotic and it makes me hyper self-aware and I leverage that. For example. I know that I can hold and communicate a train of though for an extend period of time, which means I can talk too much, which is terrible in social situations, but great for consulting in the context of going deep in response to a question and demonstrate that you're listening. It also means that generating content by talking on camera or by writing an article using voice dictation is super easy for me. A Competitive person rather than doing a self audit that way would look at what someone else has done in terms of a format for developing their content and just try to one up them. To put this in a design context, instead of bad mouthing another designer, I would focus on the value I create and also educating my client about what they should know, to help them screen designers, and also hold myself to the standard I'm telling them they should use. This empowers the client and lets me leverage a Unique Selling Position without having to compete with anyone but myself. Here is another example. I don't compete on price. Whenever a client tells me someone can do it cheaper I counter with: "I don't price match. The reason I can't offer you their rate is because I'm offering you my experience not just as a designer, but someone with a background in Marketing as well as Creative Direction. I'm not just an executioner, I'm going to help you understand things and take a considerable amount of time to make sure you are getting not just what you want but what you need. I'm going to justify every pixel to you and to myself. If the other person is offering you the same at their rate, you should absolutely go with them. My other clients pay this rate, because that is what they value the experience of working with me at." The idea that you have to "arrive" at a point before you can worry about helping other people is something that I think a lot of young people and not so young people have twisted. The cooperative mentality is an advantage from the gate. There is only so much work out there, and at some point. Designers I've helped have given me referrals or overflow work that filled my pipeline because we have a good relationship. Networking with them has given me access to people who eventually became my clients. There is no point at which building good relationships and helping people in your industry is something to put on the "back burner" for "after you're successful". Which may very well be the best kept secret in this industry...
Great efforts! My suggestion is to divide videos into 15 mins each episode(more views, more subject related.) The anime thing is the entertaining part, not the informative part. Exposing yourself do pull audience closer, but in the circumstances of this video, I don't think it's very efficient. Maybe develop a new session that's more audience interactive, like streaming?Or You could throw out a design task each week, ask people to send your works, present,-give feedback-pose value). But in the educating part, establish the conversations closely around the title, stay on track. As you mentioned that when presenting our portfolio, we need to restrict the quantity to focus on quality. I feel your strategies is to have a general timeline that's divided into different sessions, with similar focus and some freestyling. However, I don't see clear structure through editing(a huge advantage not yet employed). Maybe establish subtopic under "Building a Personal Brand": 1)why you talk about it[connect to the audience group]. 2)define[what is branding]. 3)why is it important[appeal to audience's desire and fear, more income, etc.] 4)play recorded conversation with Roberto Blake with edited highlights. 5)... I have more thoughts on hosts style that I could add later when I'm free. Keep up the good work, I really appreciate the designer insight. All I was trying to provide constructive feedback from my pov, hope they are helpful.
I'm more looking forward to the design contest, I think that require a deeper level of communication, as it's more interactive. I really like your videos, keep up the good work I'll stay informed of your moves. By the way, it's rare to see a channel that pays such attention to its audience, that really shows your identity as a designer, "listen to the needs"
I know this is over a year old, but I wanted to respond to your question! I think one of the main things that gets in my way in terms of creating a personal brand online is that "the internet is forever" whereas I personally am always changing. @Roberto Blake and @The Skool Network, how do you create a public personal brand when you're still figuring out who you are?
Don't let the idea of being perfect prevent you from being good. The reality is that we are all growing and evolving. Enroll people in your process as you grow. Just start and everything will be okay.
+The Skool Network Thanks so much for your quick reply! That is a great point. I just reached out to someone to ask if I can create a website for her business, thanks to inspiration from you three! :) So that feels like a good step. Thank you!!
I am a shy person i am a generalist designer and they say you have to choose one specialist to focus on and post all your content relevant to it need your advice
Whenever I have to create a logo, web, or anything for somebody else is a lot easier than when I have to create it for myself, I just don't get any ideas for my personal stuff. I don't know if that is something normal :(.
It's normal. Doing work for yourself is one of the hardest things to do. You lose objectivity. It's why doctors don't operate on family members. Same reason.
Paul, I'd recommend writing down your objectives and committing to them. Give yourself permission to change later, but stick to a deadline. Honestly, if clients didn't give us deadline, we'd still be trying to finish up our project. The same goes for doing work for yourself. You can also try posting each phase publicly and making a commitment and then announcing to your friends. they'll hold you accountable.
What gets in my way by building my personal brand? Basicly... ...it's my parents! :/ haha they totally don't understand that building a business in the internet or on the computer is totally possible in this time. okay tbh ist not "haha" it's kinda sad. But never mind :^) keep the work up! Thanks man
Really cool topic guys and thanks for introducing us to Roberto Blake! I've started to share my design process a few month ago, writting my journal and I learn a lot everyday: structure my thoughts, go beyond the immediate experience, be more relevant... Before doing that, I had to ask myself a lot of questions: "who am I?", "what do I have to offer to others?", "what makes me different?"... and it wasn't easy to answer! ;) It's true you have to be patient, it's really hard to make people interact with your content right away, you have to challenge yourself a lot. Your "personal brand" can't be done in one day! If you guys have 5 minutes, I would love to exchange and get your advices: www.theseventeenth.com/blog and in any case, keep it up!
Hey listening to this video, I feel almost connected. I have like 40 videos I am working on editing and probably 150k words of content I have written that needs edited, I make all my own graphics(which seams to take longer due to the creative flow) I know my audunice but I feel maybe I am doing to many things at once but I am handling it. I am putting in 12-16 hours every other day doing a news, station, SEO channel, Full stack Dev channel decentralized development etc. you have any time management tips. how do you handle multiple big projects at once??? thanks in advanced @robertoblake
I think you guys are VERY knowledgeable on all of the topics you discuss however, I get annoyed after a while and can't take all of the the joking and going off topic. I guess you are trying to appeal to the younger audience. I would love to see more from you all but maybe a little more serious.
Could you please expand on the question? Why am I still on the fence about ______ ? I don't completely understand what you are asking, but just recently started sharing my process and would love to weigh in. In my portfolio I share the process on all my projects when possible, but do not have copy to help narrarate. Additionally, I started sharing the process on a current project of mine via Bēhance's online WIP space: www.behance.net/mr_cncpts/wip
***** Thanks for the clarification. Sean Wes recently built his social media empire and gives insights to help others extremely well. I follow him and despite the confidence and insights I've gained, I guess I'm still lying to myself that I am not ready yet. I keep pushing back because I fear I don't have the right tools to start filming myself which is totally not true. Anyone with a smart phone is well equipped to take the first step. Or I don't have an audience that would care to listen yet. I like how Roberto referenced Vaynerchuk by saying we all start at zero. That first step is a huge scary one though.
Mark Ramdarass Part of it is surrounding yourself with people who will encourage and inspire you. You also have to truly have a desire to provide something of value, then you won't be afraid as much, you will be more concerned with what you stand to accomplish.
Roberto.. you do great stuff, so please dont take this as me trolling. You're here to speak about building a personal brand. Surely you could have put a little more effort with your "backdrop" instead of a bed ...
Roberto is great! no doubts about it! It's just ..as a designer.. "how things look" is just as important as the "quality of content" . I truly don't want to sound like a troll...but when my eyes are "wandering" and the only thing I can concentrate on is the bedsheets and stationary in the background.. it does Roberto disjustice and the "quality content" he is putting out there. Just my thoughts. Great channel btw!
This video is a year old, I think its when he was starting his business his videos are very different now. I can't imagine going from I think he said 20k subs and today he is at 180k - CRAZY!!! Great job.
It was great talking with both of you and the viewers in the audience today on personal branding and the benefits of it!
+Roberto Blake Great work bro! Its interesting timing for me to see this video, and because of the reinforcement I will be starting my own channel very soon!
BIG thanks for the inspiration and I'll have to give you a HUGE S/O for it when I do in fact create it!

i have to say this is so wild and relatable as designer who is both introverted and nerdy. Glad im not alone with this.
You are not alone Steve.
Really this is one of the best interviews I've seen in a long time, Roberto so on point with his breakdowns of the essentials of personal branding and marketing online overall. Great work guys thanks

I like the Show and this interview with roberto Blake is really nice.
Love this! Very helpful, thank you!
You're welcome Monika!
Seems like Roberto basically said here...that *if you wanna grow your personal brand, you gotta be a [youtube] educator?*
Because, @5:10 he's basically saying no one will initiate a specific search for you [your brand].
That comment killed me
That's jose alright.
I hope this is the question are you were asking, if not, ask again and I'll try to answer it.
really great content. thank you :)
+1, would loved to have chimed in LIVE.
I would have loved to answer any of your questions Chris! In fact I'll do it right here if you'd like!
thank you so much!! and chris you're very handsome and so well mannered !
awwww. You're gonna make me blush.
really Chris you have a beautiful face ...i have a passion for photography :) xoxoxox
NIRVANA burns I've always joked that it's my money maker but I was referring to my mouth. :)
So helpful man!
Thanks Rifat!
Hi guys,
Roberto Blake I believe there's a moment You co-oporate and the moment You "compete" with other graphic designers.
Whenever a client tells me someone can do it cheaper I counter with:
"I don't price match. My other clients pay this rate, because that is what they value the experience of working with me at."
The idea that you have to "arrive" at a point before you can worry about helping other people is something that I think a lot of young people and not so young people have twisted.
Chris doesn't need to do a cosplay, he is One-Punch man already
Hehe
he is inspiring!
I think I saw Chris at Full Sail , did he go there?
No. Haven’t been.
All I was trying to provide constructive feedback from my pov, hope they are helpful.
william, we are doing FB live talks now as well. make sure you follow us for notifications.
2021… who’s here
How does Roberto speak so fluently? I can't even construct a full sentence for my google home to understand.
practice. practice. practice.
Thank you!!
+Jamie Hand you're welcome.
🙏
I am a shy person i am a generalist designer and they say you have to choose one specialist to focus on and post all your content relevant to it need your advice
my advice. They are correct! we have videos on this topic. look through our library. i think it's called social media marketing.
Best
Whenever I have to create a logo, web, or anything for somebody else is a lot easier than when I have to create it for myself, I just don't get any ideas for my personal stuff. I don't know if that is something normal :(.
It's normal. Doing work for yourself is one of the hardest things to do. You lose objectivity. It's why doctors don't operate on family members. Same reason.
Any tips on how to overcome this barrier? I don't wanna have to travel to Tibet to find inner peace or something like that lol.
Thanks man
Want to see joses sandwich designs.
How do we bring him back
Really cool topic guys and thanks for introducing us to Roberto Blake!
I've started to share my design process a few month ago, writting my journal and I learn a lot everyday: structure my thoughts, go beyond the immediate experience, be more relevant...
Before doing that, I had to ask myself a lot of questions: "who am I?", "what do I have to offer to others?", "what makes me different?"... and it wasn't easy to answer! ;)
It's true you have to be patient, it's really hard to make people interact with your content right away, you have to challenge yourself a lot.
Good Fucking Video!!
I think you guys are VERY knowledgeable on all of the topics you discuss however, I get annoyed after a while and can't take all of the the joking and going off topic. I guess you are trying to appeal to the younger audience. I would love to see more from you all but maybe a little more serious.
D Carroll have you seen our newer videos? Just curious.
Same here!
I'm here for Roberto. The host was bumping hands too much for me.
ok. we love roberto. he's friends of this channel.
Isn't producing content a part time job over your freelancing job?
I don't recall the reference.

Part of it is surrounding yourself with people who will encourage and inspire you.
Roberto's great. I think he gets a pass because it's the quality of content vs. how things look. right?
Roberto is great! no doubts about it! It's just ..as a designer.. "how things look" is just as important as the "quality of content" . I truly don't want to sound like a troll...but when my eyes are "wandering" and the only thing I can concentrate on is the bedsheets and stationary in the background.. it does Roberto disjustice and the "quality content" he is putting out there. Just my thoughts. Great channel btw!
To a degree, we have to get over the form things take and focus a little more on the impact they create.
Maybe he's just being an ironic hipster
This video is a year old, I think its when he was starting his business his videos are very different now.
I can't imagine going from I think he said 20k subs and today he is at 180k - CRAZY!!! Great job.
What is that annoying sound???
air conditioner. it's why we don't shoot on the stage anymore.
NERD POWER!
Marisa Martins who is nerd? Who is power?
Chris Do and Roberto Blake at 28:25! Sorry for the basic comment, this is very helpful, I'm in the very begining of this process myself.
i am proud card carrying member of the nerd social club. : )
Don't know who is this but I am as well.
