Yamaha NS-1000's! My favorite sounding loudspeaker overall; not just Yamaha. It's my daily driver, and I'm listening to this video on them now. I can't recommend them enough. Crisp tight base from a sealed 12", and remarkable mids, and highs that don't break down when you push them. They still hold up well since the tight bass leaves room for a modern subwoofer's range in both music or home theater. I am biased, though. I grew up listening to music and film on my father's pair of NS-1000's.

      Hello there

    • @gregmiller3630

This one's easy. Back in the day I had a pair of S-4115H utility speakers that I used for home listening, mobile DJ, and friends parties when their parents were out of town. Although they couldn't play as loud as my Altec 846's, they had a smoother mid range, and were easier to move around on their built in casters. I don't know how long they were in production, but Yamaha sold a zillion of these things and if you've ever been on a carnival midway ride in the 70's, 80's or even 90's, it's probably what was barking out the sound track or announcements. To this day I still run across the odd forum thread about someone using them in their home hi-fi system with a pair of tube amps, which is kind of cool. On a more serious note, the NS-1000 and NS-690 were really nice speakers both sonically, and cosmetically. (The rosewood version of the NS-1000 was stunning)

Thanks for this. I got a pair being delivered Tuesday. £186 from Amazon. I’m busy renovating a music room at home and these fit the bill nicely as a Zone B set of speakers to run off my Yamaha RX-A880 receiver that’s in the living room.
The room isn’t big so I don’t need to turn the volume up loud. They meet the criteria and won’t break the bank. Besides, I’d rather have these than a pair of book shelf speakers.

I view a lot of these online audio review channels. They are good but they are always one persons opinion. I love the fact that you both have an opinion here and you are both accepting of each others views. It doesn't matter what I think of these speakers. you have shown in this video what I believe is the most important thing with choosing your home audio. Not everyone likes the same sound from their audio products. If they did there would be 1 amplifier 1 pair of speakers and so on. I have had many speakers/amplifiers/turntables etc. over the years that I have loved but friends of mine have not. As I get older I realised that it wasn't about what other people liked but about what I liked. Your videos give people a good idea of sound and build quality so they can go out and listen to the products with a good idea of what to expect. Please keep providing us with these very informative and entertaining videos.

I have not personally listened to these towers, but as a long time studio rat in Nashville; I can speak to the “If it sounds good on NS-10s it will sound good on anything” theory. It truly does hold water. I don’t have have Yamahas in my home or at my studio space, but I do certainly feel a certain comfort when I can reference them while closing out mixes on a new project.

Decade old NS-777 large towers with 3-way drivers has super clear not terribly forward tweeters and decent tight low end. Cabinets are hollow but heavy at 53lbs each. Gawdy dated silver finish surrounding the cones beg you to keep the grills on. $400 new, goodwill specials at $60.

  • @robrose8126
    @robrose8126 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sometimes the grain/sand sound that can be heard in some (not all) speakers & tweeters is do to the crossover component choices & design. In some cases simply replacing the tweeter electrolytic capacitors in the crossover with quality polypropylene type of the same value will give & smoother/hi-res sound in the top end without actually changing the frequently response. I do this with most speakers i have owned in the past 25 years as a studio sound engineer & electronic repair tech... including some yamaha's (ns-777's). Also, replacing things on a component level may not be for everyone, but it is also a great tool to develop your hearing for the very fine sonic differences.
Thanks & love your reviews 👍

Not my main speakers these days but I’ll never part with them even after forty years! They’re hooked up to my TV with a Yamaha YST subwoofer ✌️🌹❤️

  • @Downhuman74

There's a lot to be said about budget gear. I grabbed the Pioneer Andrew Jones 5.1 set-up 4 years ago just so I could get something that sounded half-way decent but wouldn't make me cry if/when they get beat up (I have two boys who are -- in a word -- brutal). But I was actually blown away by how good they sound (and still sound). So good, in fact, that I find I'm not in such a hurry to upgrade now that my boys are approaching a calmer age (I definitely will, though, eventually). They look basic as hell but they've held up beautifully. And oddly enough, not a scratch on them.

One night I was playing them and I started falling asleep, when the bells started playing on the Dark Side of the Moon album I thought they were in the room. I jumped up. Maybe 12 inch tall monitors about 5 inch woofers. Do not remember the model, had white woofers, extremely clear sounding speakers. Think model started with 'NS' . Fantastic. Hey guys. I’ve had a pair of NS-6HX towers for a few years now.
I was on the way home with mum and her shopping and we called in at the Op-shop. There were a set of 5 speakers, 4 towers and a centre, and as they looked interesting I decided to come back after dropping mum home..... strangely she’s not interested in speakers🤷‍♂️ go figure!
Anyway in 20mins I was back and 2 towers had been sold 🤨😭 I speculate they were the NS-8HX with an extra woofer.
Anyway I picked up the remaining 3 for $40, ....Though I never keep the grills on as they’re a silvery grey colour and a bit tatty, I believe the veneer is Canadian maple which I do like though 😉👍
Don’t know what they would have cost new, but they’re about 30kg and have twin binding posts, so I thought they should be reasonable🤷‍♂️ ......well they are!
Don’t really know how to describe the sound, except to say that I like it! I guess that’s the important thing....right 😉
Since then I’ve had them in and out of my stereo setup.... and as the last time I had them playing I had my Sansui A 80 amp hooked up I haven’t heard them with the vintage Yamaha amp I set up at Xmas ( CA610 ) 😉
I sense a swap around in the air.....can you feel it🤨😂🖖

Hi! Great video as always 😊 I have been in the planingface for a future DIY big home theatre setup (9.12.6, total power: 79000wRMS, total cost with projector, screen, seating, audio and cables is "for now" around $66666) but have had some challenges when it comes to choosing the right amps. I will need to use power amplifiers, as the speakers is going to have a true RMS rating of 2000w+ pr. speaker and i want to be able to push them to pretty high levels and be able to play at lower levels with minimum distortion. The three brands of amps I have in mind is Crown, Powersoft and Lab Gruppen. The one that I have landed on for now, is the Crown DCi 4|2400N for the mains and surrounds. The reason that I am writing this to you, is because I would love to see a comparison of more PA style amps from a sound quality aspect. SQ is going to be an important part of the system, and it is also going to be used quite a lot for two channel listening.I think quite a lot of people would love to see something like this form you, and would find it very interesting! Just the aspect of finding a PA style amp that rivals the famous budget XLS DriveCore in a setting when you have speakers that take alot of power to really open up would be interesting and give more purpose to a video like this 🙂

    favorite speakers
In defense of the much maligned Yamaha NS 10 Studio Monitors
The NS10’s were never meant to be an audio file or even a hifi speaker. They were used as a tool in the studio to aid in the tracking and mixing. They got their start in the pre digital days when 99.9% of music was going on to vinyl. Deep bass audio extensions still a thing in the future. The NS 10s aided the engineer in listening for the hiccups in the recorded tracks (tape) so they could be fixed before the two track mix went to mastering. Engineers became familiar with the sound of them. If you mixed in another studio you could be sure to find a set of them sitting on the meter bridge waiting for you. I still have my old set in my wall of speakers at home now. I like to listen to them every once in a while.
    Yamaha NS 1000s
I remember listening to the rebuilt? Set of them over You Tube at the Kenrick showroom. I think it was Sarde singing. Where did they pour in the secret sauce to get them to sound so good, over You Tube even?
Lastly I like the 48 star hanging on the wall in the background. Family?

Just an add about Yamahas professional prowess. They produce the NEXO line of live event systems that are basically audiofile P.A. systems. They have engineered these systems to go toe to toe with just about any manufacture. If you are interested in this kind of tech, check out their website.

With all the negatives, $499 is even over the top for these loudspeakers. It is built poorly and sounds bad at higher volumes, which is why most people buy tower speakers. Spend $100 more and get the Klipsch RP600M.

Now, here is a nice subject for a future video, you said in the video speaking about the Fluance speakers:
"provided you pair them with an amplifier that can properly control their built-in 8" subwoofers"
That would be a great subject to treat in a video, how do you determine if an amplifier can do that etc..
Not just for the Fluance but in general, it would a great informational/tutorial video I assume
(PS: I did rewatch the Fluance speakers review to make sure and you didn't mention this in that one)

Thanks Andrew, I appreciate your honest review. The 'famous' Yamaha studio monitors are the NS10's I believe...used in many recording studios around the world, personally I've always thought of the Yamaha brand in general, as a bit 'bright' sounding or "digital-ish''.. lacking warmth & real 'feel', although I know they make fantastic equipment, it wouldn't be my first choice. Anyways, just my 2 cents worth.
    Cheers 🤘

I have the Polk T50 and I’m happy with them. I’m sure I can find a much better speaker, but these polks do what I need them to in a home theater setup in a small room.
They can be had on sale for as little as $150 a pair(what I paid) and just hearing what you said about the Yamaha build quality at $500 is concerning. The polks are inexpensive, but the build is solid.
Would definitely be interested in your opinion on speakers that I’m satisfied with.

I bought a pair of Yamaha NS-F51 tower speakers for 250€ wich was a bargain with what they offer i believe 3 or 4 years ago and they are well built and sound great still have them can't get a better deal now a days but i think this is a euro only market they were the best budget speakers at that time and well built Also but they like gone they sold out, the only downside i could listen was the tweeters they start to make noise and i found out those tweeters were built to close to their house so some people they opened the tweeters and fixed this issue. Love the NS-1000m vintage speakers

The Yamaha NS-10M, released in 1978, was a closed box design home audio speaker. In the early '80s Studio Recording Engineering demi-god Bob Clearmountain began using them in the studio as a secondary reference monitor to check his mixes. And so many top recording engineers began to use them. They were very unpleasant sounding and so harsh, so much so that many engineers would tape tissue paper over the tweeters to calm them down. They also did not extend very low to put out much bass, but their magic was to reveal mix imbalances in the critical midrange frequencies which in turn made for mixes that translated well out in the wild on all sorts of playback systems. They became ubiquitous as nearfield secondary mix reference speakers, but they never were or are used as the primary mix speakers. They are used as a secondary mix reference check much like the Auroratones' little full-range speaker cubes that sat on the bridge of the mixing desks.
But as the technology has changed greatly in studios over the decades. They are not relying on larger JBL in-wall systems for primary playback systems like they did in the '70s and '80s. Nearfield self-powered monitors have taken over as Genelec became the new standard that was positioned on shelves just above mix desks. Many other brands have come up like ATC, Focal, and Adam Studio Monitors. Also in the last 20 years, the home studio has taken a huge slice of work away from major studios and all of these home studios were initially powered by lines like Event, Alesis and Mackie started making much more affordable solutions. In the last 10 years, the Yamaha HS-8 studio monitors and their smaller iterations made a huge impact in the semi-pro and home studio sub $1000 market. Currently, brands like KRK, JBL, Kali (ex-JBL engineers), Neumann, Mackie, PreSonus, Tannoy, Eros, M-Audio, Behringer, and many others compete fiercely in the sub $1500 market. I happen to be being my first pair of Kali LP-6s for my bedroom home studio. The Kali seems to be the best value for money in the sub $500 category right now. We all gotta start somewhere...

The flaws in the high volume listening aren't going to matter because you'll be annoying the neighbours way before the graininess becomes a personal issue!
