I can't express my happiness and how satisfied I am with Midnight. To be honest I didn't enjoy Upside Down. I totally see the point that Maxx and Zack were trying to make. But this album was really good. It seems like you've found a sound that combines all of what SIO is
i could understand how maxx feels, the drums dont seem as intense as they used to be, like in the cinematics and parts of duality there were some really good drum parts compared to how they are now, but thats the feel there going for
@@colbypassadore7161 I agree completely. And as a drummer I see whetr he's coming from. It's our passion to be a drummer we dont wanna be on stage not playing. We want to be able to rock the fuck out. I'm glad that they worked it out and figured out how to mix everyones wants and needs together and make it sound amazing as fuck.
I agree thats what I thought when I first listened to upside down, I mean for me , sure its still a good album,(edit: im also one of those who enjoyed upside down) but I think if they continue with the upside down full pop vibes , the purpose of using the drums were slowly driven out and now I love how this band turned to be honest with how they feel cuz now I realize how they got the name Set It Off
"Fuck yeah, there's tension" - make that a song lyric. As an aspiring independent musician, I am REALLY loving these behind the scenes stuff cuz it made me realise why you guys are my favorite band. I am going through a similar process. Like Cody compared Cinematics and Upside Down last video. Rock and pop. I can, want and do write both. I don't have a stronger inclination to either (save for the fact that I hardly ever write happy stuff. Im all minor) I don't plan on being in a band but I probably have a similar journey ahead, finding a middle ground, I mean. Love you guys and love Midnight ❤
what i love about this band is that they're not afraid to hide the tension in the air. they don't make it seem like they're always happy and agree on everything. it makes them seem more real and thoughtful. plus, they're mature about it, they don't disagree on something and just totally flip out on each other. i love these guys
I enjoy that you get to see the good and the bad on this video. It makes it all a bit real and like Cody said your favourite band fights. That is something you don't always understand because you only see the happy side to the world. Love how real and down to earth these guys are! 💜
This album is amazing. You guys are so talented and creative with your music. Keep it up. Edit: Now that I’ve watched the video, I think y’all did an amazing job with balancing the older SIO sound with the newer poppy sound in a way that doesn’t feel jarring. Which is why it’s personally my favorite album you guys have put out so far.
I love this episode SO MUCH. You guys are being so genuine and open about everything and it’s amazing. To show what it’s really like working together to come up with these songs and ideas and how it’s not always great. It’s nice to see the reality behind your favorite records and bands. I love it.
I've listened to Set it Off since 2014 and I was so unhappy then they're stopped composing music in 2016 and I was so happy when they're published "The killer in the mirror" Cody, I love you❤
Thank you guys for such a wonderful experience! That was so cool to meet you guys, and thank you Cody for letting me sing during the show and giving me recording advice. That was so unexpected and so wonderful. You four are so good to your fans.
when Maxx opened up on how he felt about Upside Down not having much drums, it made me wonder if that's why they let Maxx have a drum solo segment during their Midnight tour, and if it is, that's awesome! I'm glad SIO is open to listen to and understand each others thoughts, feelings and opinions!
I completely understand Maxx’s point of view because I’m such a huge metal fan, and I’m more into the dark songs, but Set It Off literally makes those happy songs so beautiful and so good I can’t even be angry, like this album is one of the best they’ve ever done and I’m so ready to see these beautiful boys perform this live. There is so much good energy from these songs I just cannot wait!
Sameeee this album was a great comeback album for the band me being a metal head there were alot more tolerable and fun and a few headbanging songs to jam with, i hope their next album follows the same lines
I like how you included the not so fun parts in this as well, because not very many people get to see the reality that is creating with others. It's very rare that everyone will agree right off the bat. It can be frustrating as hell trying to form a compromise, especially with something like music which you're so passionate about.
This is very interesting because I remember seeing Set It Off open for Simple Plan and Maxx is right for some of the set he was barely even playing. I liked the show but i didn’t connect with it. I just attended their headlining tour in Santa Cruz and WOW it’s like night and day. Love the songs and now I saw Maxx on a completely different light, just owning those songs and showing off his skills on the drum solo. I loved it. And I love that his stage persona is still mysterious and slightly dark but the confidence that he was exuding was unbelievable. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since the show. Before that show I knew one Set It Off song and now I’ve bought tickets and VIP for their other two CA shows. So happy and excited to be part of the fan base now ♥️
I completely agree with maxx tbh, it’s all of you, maxx should have more fun and yes there can be happy songs but don’t go fully pop bcuz there is so much of that already, SIO is rare and different and that’s why I like you guys so much so keep a variety also on a boat ride
I like set it off. The old albums, new ones, I like em. I like their happy songs, grim songs, sassy songs, and their silly songs. They're fun, what ever they are doing, I want to hear it.
I personally loved the mix of happy tones and dark tones in this album. It felt very balanced to me, and I love that you guys show us this personal side to the band considering it feels like we, as listeners, never get to see the struggle creators go through to please us. I'm so happy with this album and you guys! I love you!
They have created something so individual. It’s raw but refined, it crescendos and has height but still grounds you. It has this sense of intensity but not a singular emotion. It’s crazy and I love it. Everything about it carries validation. It doesn’t take anything away from them and helps them grow by balancing and validating each other and it’s really spectacular. I tried to explain it but it doesn’t really make sense. Something about it strikes a really intense cord with me but I can’t really pin point what it is. I just know that this album makes me incredibly emotional. Couldn’t tell you what that emotion is but it’s powerful.
I love how they show they do speak about how they all feel and their own opinions about the record and the music produced, but in the end it does show that even though our fav band do have small ups and downs they do stay together very strong 😭❤️
I'm so glad y'all released Midnight and even went so far as to inform us that you're not 'happy all the time' and that arguments of sorts do break out.
Very insightful and interesting episode. It's nice to see the intricacies of discussing the tone of this ablum. I love Midnight. Can't wait to see you guys Sunday!!
I love that you guys aren't advertising a perfect band and you show that sometimes different members will be on different pages! Also the album turned out great!!!!
I absolutely love the new album. Even more so the whole not conforming to a certain style. Whatever you guys end up doing, myself and plenty of others will listen. Keep making the music you love!
Its so nice seeing the process of how everything is made. You really get to see how hard they worked on this album. It just adds like another layer to midnight and I love it.
You guys are so amazing! It's great for you to show us the ups and downs and not pretend that everything comes easy, it's also so great that you discuss your thoughts and feelings and try to make sure everyone gets something out of it! Midnight is so amazing and I'm growing more and more appreciation for you because you're first, very talented and you all work together to make yourselves and your fans happy! Can't wait to see you in March!!!
I love that set it off can reconnect and not just block each other out 🖤🖤🖤 Also, so sorry about missing this when it was posted I’ve been waiting for another episode😻
This is the most likes I’ve seen without ANY dislikes in a really long time or probably ever, and I can see why, this video is really cool and it lets me know that one of my favorite bands has issues like any other group of friends, and in my opinion that’s awesome.
Every one of these behind the scenes videos makes me love the album more but more importantly I'm loving the band more and all of the effort that went into this. I've said from the first day I hear the album it's combining everything I love about Set It Off... The edgy with a pop vibe to it and that doing this album wasn't easy and there was tension but in the end something truly amazing and magical came out of it. So fucking proud of you guys
I REALLY REALLY REALLY appreciate that they put this segment in here. On the surface, it always seems like everything is totally rainbows all the time with your favorite bands. And SIO's ability to sit down & air their grievances not just between them, but to the friggin' PUBLIC by filming this, is a great look into the typical creative process. Not to mention it shows their maturity in being able to address what they need to without getting petty or angry. Sidenote: it lowkey surprises me to hear how much they all dont like Upside Down. I became a fan just after Cinematics was released, and yeah, I was a little disappointed in the new "pop" sound they had on UD, but I was fine with it bc they all seemed proud of the album at the time. I guess that's not as true as I thought. (& I'm really glad they're back to a rock sound in their roots. Their obvious love for the grittier sides of MCR and The Used are what totally drew me in to loving them in the first place.) Keep it up, boys!
If y’all see this then I’m the girl that Cody hugged twice and I’m the one who made the joke about Cody wearing camo pants at the Houston concert and I was wearing a red hoodie I had a great time at the concert y’all are the best
even though Upside Down is my favorite SIO album it makes me happy to see them feeling like this about their new record because Midnight got such positive feedback and it deserves it
Im so glad you guys were able to make things work for this album because its incredible! As for upside down im so bummed that one doesnt get the love it deserved because it was a great album in its own right. I’ll admit. My first thoughts on Upside Down, and even the rest of Midnight were kinda meh, then I opened my mind a bit, listened more closely, and fell in love with it all. I see all the sides and see all of what they’re trying to do. This is without a doubt one of their best albums yet and I can’t wait to see what they do next
я очень плохо знаю английский и только интуитивно что-то понимаю из их речей, но все равно слушать их, смотреть как создается музыка которая нам нравится - просто нереально круто. спасибо вам всем, надеюсь побывать когда-нибудь на концерте!
I'm really glad that you guys feel like that tbh. I was afraid that you guys would get more upside down and less duality. The thing with upside down is not necessarily that it was too poppy but I think you lost a lot of the energy. I really see what maxx and zach were talking about. I personally feel (even though I love it and it's one of my favourite albums) cinematic was a little too rock and upside down was too pop and duality was the perfect inbetween. Midnight brings that back a lot, I love it, it's a really good step in the right direction in my opinion and I was so glad when it was released with the sound
I think that--looking back--you all achieved in making a big comeback with this album, and I think it was crafted with pure genius and ingenuity and the right mindset with a goal in mind. There's no doubting what you have accomplished musically and the impact your music leaves in peoples lives. I think you made Midnight way more diverse than your previous albums but there is always room for improvement. Like Zach said, "structure it like a pop song but make it sound like a pop song". You definitely did that but I think your songs in this album are just a bit too separated. like compare Dancing With the Devil and Stitch Me Up. Both have the elements of pop and rock but they also sound totally different. When I hear Stitch Me Up, it gives me more of a light-hearted pop song but has the energy of a rock song. Dancing With the Devil definitely has the energy and aura of a rock song. It comes with negative emotions but a positive message and outlook. It seems way more rock than pop but it still has parts of it that makes it so "popy" (for lack of a better word). The two have the details about it that make it have the ability to be categorised under Zach's whim. Yet it is so different. That's a good thing because I get disappointed when a music group that I listen to releases an album and it all sounds the same. I don't like it when the songs blend together and you can't tell one from the other. So I like how diverse it is and how you can just hear how you have incorporated your past music style and present music style. I hear Upside Down and I admit--It does sound too pop. I'm not a huge fan of pop but you can't deny the energy and talent that went into it. I hear Uncontainable and wanna jump in my seat and punch every fucking object around--yes even my best friend's face--but that's normal for me. I'm just a person with a lot of energy and edge. But then I hear Crutch and go "wow, this person in my life is a total bitch". But it has so much emotion behind it that it is undeniable. With Duality you brought the better side of people out (when I say the better side I mean their true self). Hearing your goals with Duality and what you wanted to accomplish with it is certainly inspiring and uplifting. Why Worry is such a good song because it has pop, elements of rock, edge, sass and such a good message. It had the good energy thanks to your combined efforts with Brandon and the right balance. Going back to Cinematics it was genius but had too much aggression. You indeed could have been seen as a gothic band but if you go back to the videos that were released about the production of Cinematics you hear the producers saying that "Cody has a special talent" and you can hear and see that. The way that you could hear a melody in your head and just add in what you hear needs to be added in is a gift that I wish that I had. The way you can just pour the right emotions into your singing is outstanding. But it was too dark. But that was just the kind of people you all were back then. Same with Horrible Kids. It was aggressive but had a good message. It was similar to Cinematics only it isn't as orchestral and real. It was still good. Hearing songs like Ashley's Song and I Think It's Arrogance is dark and a good song to jump to in a concert but compared to Midnight it pales in comparison. Midnight has more talent, emotion, balance, chemistry and you can tell it was written with people driven by a goal and enough creativity to accomplish it. I love seeing the way your band has progressed and how well your career has treated you. But there is always room for improvement. I can't wait to hear what you guys come out with next because I love everything you come out with (Yes, even Baby You Don't Tripajaharda and Calm Before The Storm, you can't deny they exist :D) and I really want to see where you go with the next album. Also, After Midnight is a stroke of pure genius, too. But that's from the Midnight Era, so future music is anticipated. Like Cody said in an interview with Rock Sound during COVID - 19, "we are always changing and coming out with new sounds but you will always know it's Set It Off" (by the way, you can always tell. You all have an identifiable sound and aura so strong that you can always tell it's Set It Off when you start playing). Congratulations on the improvement and I am so stoked and can't wait for future music. Stay safe and take care 💙⏳💙
plsplsplsplspls come to Mexico 15 of November I want to see ya for my birthday!!!! pls I pray you Im a big fan off you ,you where the first band that I ever loved in my life you are the best!!
I personally don’t like the whole pop thing, but I do enjoy the rock. I think that it’s better if you do rock, but it’s considered pop. Or pop, but it sounds like rock. Just as long as you include rock, I’m okay. I love you alls music, and I think that hourglass is my favorite song from the midnight album. 🖤
i love how they show that there not all a happy group that agrees all the time
Well you know what they say, it's fine to not be happy all the time (even tho my inner grammar police officer is screeching at the split infinitive)
it’s hard to not be happy all the time

I see all the sides and see all of what they’re trying to do. This is without a doubt one of their best albums yet and I can’t wait to see what they do next
i love you guys
Can't wait to meet you guy's sunday
я очень плохо знаю английский и только интуитивно что-то понимаю из их речей, но все равно слушать их, смотреть как создается музыка которая нам нравится - просто нереально круто. спасибо вам всем, надеюсь побывать когда-нибудь на концерте!
i love it so much t hat u guys don't show just the gond moments and act like ther is always everything fine :D
(sorry for my bad english :( )
I’d give my left kidney to see you guys in concert
YAY
1:32 omg look at maxx's hair!!! It's Soo long!!!
Respect!
I think the next album will be even better than Midnight since Midnight was made while working through the bands differences
3:32 preach maxx preach
They argue so maturely! My family gets upset and we walk away from each other and rant to our friends.
When are you gonna release hourglass love as a single on spotify??? I really love that song and wanna be able to listen to it!
No entiendo nada pero me encanta.
