I was big into metal/hair bands back in the 80’s and by chance saw a outdoor show with Huey Lewis with the tower of power horn section. It was and still is one of the best shows I ever saw. Amazing 🤘👍
Great band and great music. I always looked at funk and related music as a great right hand exercise. With the bonus that it sounds great!!! Keep up the great work Dave. Awesome lesson 🎸
I was really fortunate to see Tower of Power on tour...with Huey Lewis and the News during the Fore! tour. Amazing band. I also know someone who used to play bass for them but had to quit due to a freak accident that broke his back. Thanks for this lesson Sensei Dave! I'm always looking for variations and ways to spruce up those rhythms.
I remember someone talking about that long ago. So sad when such a thing happens. I've had a pinched nerve that caused my fret hand to go completely numb across half of it. I used to wake up in tears every half hour. On a good note, a friend of mine took lessons from their guitarist when he was a kid. His brother says he could play like Hendrix by the time he was 10. I personally know he could play like Van Halen when I met him at 17.
Greetings from Brazil, David! I have learned a lot from your videos! Thank you for dedicating your time and knowledge to inform and teach about so many artists, techniques and ideas!
Cheers from California! I hope things are going good for you in Brazil. And for people in all countries. You are all my fellow Earthlings, and of course are important to me. :D
LATE NIGHT, try to do lessons about "Horn Section Chords" from bands like Janis Joplin Kozmic Blues Album, Cold Blood horn section, The Ides of March, Elvin Bishop Group, The Electric Flag, Sons of Champlin, Albert Kings Horn Section, etc. It would be nice to know what types of chords these horn sections used interlaced with the horn melody line /voice leading. Jimi Hendrix was going to do an album with the band Chicago and other horn group rock bands he was jamming with. If you learn how Hendrix uses his rhythm chords and picking tech its like the picking hand is the drummer doing the string chugging mutes and the rhythm chords are Horn Section like chords and voice leading plus the "Horn Jabs" hendrix does also in his rhythm guitar chords.
Oakland! My ancestral home. lols The other guitarist in 2 of the metal bands I was in, his dad (a pro jazz bassist) was friends with Tower of Power members, Their guitarist gave my friend lessons when he was like 8 or 9 years old, I think. I met him when he was 17, and he could play like Van Halen. His brother recalls he could play Hendrix by the time he was 10 (solos included).
That is indeed the correct usage of that word. In fact, it's probably in part because they were local, my parents age, and I knew people who were their friends, so I didn't pay much attention to them until I was older. So yea, I underrated them for awhile too. My loss apparently. lols
Hey what up man digging the lessons, Tower power is great. Hell yeah man I'm down with the funk lessons. You ever heard of Galactic out of New Orleans. They are bad ass. I think you went over maggot Brain on this channel once before to
Hey Dave - can you feature Teemu Mantysaari for metal month coming up in Oct? I'm seeing Megadeth soon and Teemu is filling in for Kiko Loureiro on this tour. Teemu's got some really cool ideas and I can't wait to see him play the Tornado of Souls solo!
I would like to see the chords for Come Back Baby by Tower Of Power, I believe there are some major 7th and minor 9ths in the song as well as a steely dan MU chord for the ending chord of the song. Thank you.
I was rying to figure why Steve Lukather said theres all theres amazing musicians but no great songs on Rick Beato. Then watch this young guy trying to figure out the exact technique of a funky old blues musicians. Im like kid you got to do your own thing because you will never sound like someone else and how they were born to play. Seems like nobody older influenced Clapton or Gilmour or Holdsworth or all the old legends and they went their own way completely. Its great fun to learn all the stuff from days gone by but at a certain time when we understand the fundamentals and whats going maybe we need to neever listen to old stuff againor master old songs. IDK but why did Lukather say theres no great songs and i must admit while theres good new stuff theres nothing that compares to the old stuff. Im not going to even come close with the new stuff i have to feeling like i did with the old stuff. I dont have the answers but Lukather was right. Were not focuasing on studying on how to be original . Maybe there needs to be channels on moving into the future and changing our focus. Idk maybe its just all been done but i doubt it. i think im going to not play one more cover for a while or study legends and study song writing and figuring out why my own music is. Are we becoming older fan boys where guys like Knopfler new where they wanted to go and focused finding their own thing. David how do change focus in teaching and move younger musicians away from days gone by and great technique and make some great new music. IDK BUT LUKATHER GOT ME THINKING. Bands like the Police Genesis and U2 were szo new and still sound like we were moving into the future as opposed to younger people either taking shredding too far or studying funky old blues players ands obsessing on their techniques. Something is wrong and Lukather got me thinking. FOR MYSELF I NEED TO PUT MORE TIME INTO FINDING MY OWN THING AND DYING ON THAT HILL RATHER THAN LIVING IN THE PAST LIKE I AM NOW AND NOT WRITING ANYTHING GOOD. Oh im a better player for sure but i got nothing to say cause im always playing guitar and not creating anything. Id rather be a sloppy hack with something to say then just another great cover band, Great but covere bands are always whatever. THESE ARE NOT MY THOUGHTS AND IM NOT SAYING YOUR CHANNEL ISNT FN AMAZING BECAUSE ITS MY FAVORITE CHANNELS AND SO VALUABLE BUT WHAT WAS LUKATHER DRIVING AT?
More funk !! Love it !!!
I dont think we give the dog in the intro enough kudo's for all the editing and producing he does
Love it ....Great job Dave, as usual !

I would never have thought to request Tower of Power, but I couldn't have asked for a better Chordplay Lesson! Thanks, David!
Good call on this one,.David. Tastiness 👌🏼
thanks so much Dave!
Great lesson!
I met Bruce Conte in 1991 when my band opened for Tower of Power and he said he loved touring very much. He also borrowed my reverb. 😎

Gotta love the funk

Dave, big fan of the channel. Would love to see some funky Shane Theriot stuff. He's a monster funk player. The more Leo Nocentelli the better.
Thanks for the class from a drummers sreat.
Hi i love your boston chord play. I wanted to ask if you could do a tutorial on ‘Hollyann’ from Boston their third stage album
Gotta do a Corey Wong/Vulfpeck lesson if you’re featuring more funk
