We were regular Dragnet fans back then but I now get emotional as the shows work out . The shows become my reality as I watch, I was practically crying this episode.
One of this long running TV series that had a meaning. Seems like the four in the kitchen area of the apartment had a strong feeling of sorrow of a person who experienced the tragedy of losing a baby, then, trying to replace the deep hurt of loss.
I really enjoy the radio episodes, too, @sharonroller8849, and occasionally I watch the TV shows! However, I MUCH prefer the radio shows over the TV ones!
@@michaelcase8574 Wouldn't it be ironic if, after playing a senior citizen on radio, when she was in her 20s, she would play a young adult when she is 99?
@tonypanzarella9387 I wouldn't put anything past her! She is fearless! What they thought older people sounded like back then, sounds anything but like old people today sound like. In her old age, she sounds nothing like her old person's voice back in those earlier days.
Originally telecast on January 31, 1952. Rebroadcast in syndication as "BADGE 714" from 1953 through 1962. Adapted from the November 9, 1950 radio episode. Yes, Barney Phillips was chosen to replace the late Barton Yarborough- as "Sergeant Ed Jacobs"- on radio *and* TV in January 1952.......but was eventually dropped because he sounded too much like Jack Webb. Ironically, Herb Ellis {"Sergeant Olivas"} replaced HIM as the original "Officer Frank Smith" in the fall of '52.
At 1:20, Joe Friday states, "It was Thursday, November 28th". That would have been the fourth Thursday of November, meaning, it was Thanksgiving (and, the latest date on which Thanksgiving can fall ... in the US, of course). It is surprising that they didn't play up the angle that the child was missing on a traditional family holiday.
This episode has a lot of personal meaning to me, and I NEEDED it tonight. This is the first time I have ever watched it. When I was born, in 1951, my mother had already had 2 miscarriages and a “nervous breakdown”. She was 32 years old when I finally came along. In 1951, that was very old to be a 1st time mother. Mine was a difficult birth, and I only weighed 5 pounds, tiny for a live birth back then. But, if I had been any heavier, I would not have survived. She might not have either. (Do you know the name of the physician who attended your birth? I do. I was named after him. Well, both of my grandfathers were also named John. She told me the actual truth years later.) I was “just right”, and would be her only child. She did not live to collect Social Security. Cancer of the Uterus took her 3 weeks before her 64th birthday, almost 40 years ago. Ironic, isn’t it?
A problem is the cigarette smoke adds an element of random ess to scenes. Making them more believable or tolerated. Otherwise they look stage overly simplistic.
Can you imagine, anyone expecting an award, for a missing baby? People have no shame! Why would anyone expect a reward? Imagine, a young couple, missing their child, being so worried, but worse, is a woman, who is so self centered, that she kidnaps someone else's newborn, no matter what she has been through!
13:51 Joe has one of his 'coffin nails' in his hand in a lot of scenes....they finally killed him at the age of 62,although he looked like he was 80.....
Sad story but. They didn't need nice soft guitar to soothe anyone. She took a baby! They had orphanages. All they had to do was apply! THEY spent ZERO amount of time showing us the Mother reunited with HER adorable Baby!!! Get Real.😊 She never says "I'm Sorry". And "Oh just one more thing" as Columbo would say. Mothers give birth in Alaska where it very cold for the mother and the baby...they don't all come to the south...😊
So why don’t they just do a paternity test !! I mean so what DNA is so easy to do !! Also, what if the baby was Muslim , or Jewish and now it’s baptized!

It is a very moving episode.
Flawless transfer; no VHS head-switching noise here. Transferred from a well cared for film reel.
Thank you for these episodes.
Our pleasure!
That was heart wrenching. The acting by Barney Phillips and the man who played Peggy Webber's husband was very moving. Thank you for uploading this.
Oh my gosh. ....poor woman..women understand .😞
Such a great actress
This series is so well done, utterly ICONIC. Never gets old. Film Noir is back!
Lots of Jack Webb regulars in the episode. Really touching and heartbreaking one as well.

I know the radio episode this is a remake of is going around, but I think this is the first time the tv episode turned up! Another great find!
Jack Webb often used radio episodes for his tv Series, both the 1950's one and the 1960's one.
Greatest show of all time
🎥One of my favorite TV shows!💯💥👍!
Indubidubly 🙂
Peggy Webber was terrific in ANY role she portrayed.
The great Peggy Webber. Gosh what a great actor. They dont all end like this one though.
Agreed...what a performance.
And in 2024 she is still with us at age 98. She appeared in four episodes between 1952 and 1955.
Just put up a Dupont Cavalcade Theater with Peggy Weber th-cam.com/video/AVX1B5rmwFo/w-d-xo.html
I have been trying to find out what faith she is. Does anyone know? Thanks!
Peggy was a actress not actor...yes great
Really enjoy the radio episodes , but it's nice to see the actual people , t.v. show is new for me

Peggy is still around approaching 100. The head of a radio theatre group in California.
She played Jack's mother on the Dragnet radio show.
And, when she played Joe Friday's mother, she was only in her late 20s. She could pull off any role.
@@tonypanzarella9387 She sure did! Peggy' theatre is CART, California Actors Radio Theatre. It's located in the Inland Empire area of S. California.

Beautifully restored.
Many thanks!
Peggy Webber did a very realistic Mexican accent! 😊
Loved watching dragnet sitting with my Papa ❤
What happened at you remembered was it good was it bad🎉😮
Superb acting by the woman who stole the baby. Peggy Webber.
Yes, it was. She was in an episode of Gunsmoke called Cheap Labor. She was excellent in that part, too.
Peggy Webber, Harry Bartell, Ralph Moody - quite the cast.
I’ve always thought that dragnet was always overdone and really staged but this is genuinely sad and very well acted
Frank moody. A great actor from radio. He played a great Indian in many Gusmoke radio shows as well as many utterly chacters.
Am I the only one that expected Friday's partner to have a third eye?
Hint: Twilight Zone
Code Pink. Hospitals are under better protection, but newborn abduction is still an issue. Most don't make it out of the hospital.
Jack and Barney ❤❤❤

Are you OCD? That takes a little work to verify a trivial detail
takes no work at all the last thursday in November is Thanksgiving. real basic grown up knowledge😮

End well!

Thank you for sharing your very personal story. God Bless.
May her memory be a blessing.
The small hospital and crummy hotel were not unusual at the time.
Notice the streetcar rails in opening photos and commentary.
Go Peggy!
Upload more of these, i just want the logo
I was born in 1946😊
Just the facts, people. 🥱
Gotta love it. Joe doesn't even put his cigarette down when he answers the phone. I am surprised TH-cam doesn't sensor this video.

1950s style chain smoking 🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬
25:11 I like the cartoon version of this ,where guy hits his thumb, much better....
13:51 Joe has one of his 'coffin nails' in his hand in a lot of scenes....they finally killed him at the age of 62,although he looked like he was 80.....
The party scene was cringe

I always thought it humorous that Joe's badge # and Quaalude 714s had the same #....I took a 'Lude' or two in my sordid youth.....:>)...

Ya know I am being sarcastic about the DNA testing!
Over narrated.
I hated watching dragnet my grandfather always forced me to do so. I still hate him and I hate Dragnet S.O.B.'s😢
