Eddie Firestone who played Hoffman was in the Marines during WW2, reached the rank of Captain and was still in the reserves till 1957.
My dad was a detective in Washington DC in the 50s and 60s, His three favorite things were coffee, cigarettes and guns.
My favorite episode. I remember watching Dragnet so intently in the early 50s that I was almost in a trance. One of the Dragnet promotions was giving away a little gold badge 714 if you bought gas at a Pure Oil station. My Dad never bought any gasoline but Esso. He claimed always using the same gas was good for your car. Bless his heart he went to Pure Oill and bought a couple of gallons so I could have that badge. Thanks again dad I miss you.

.me too would watch intently....but .as a little girl..I would feel slightly " malencholy ' ..after ea episode ..it fasinated me but also made me me feel bad at same time ...I think boys feel differently......now ..I ask my 21 yr old SON do u have nightmares or don't get nightmares honey .. watching so ,& so ...he just laughs at me....never got upset at any movie or show ..that I can tell..& I know we would watch these ole re-runs together!😅.....shows the difference between boys & girls ....I'm so glad he's not bothered)! But he is still very caring and sweet,
It's amazing how this show captured the ordinary man and woman of the period the humour, the serious nature et all...Love this show!
and great acting even in the small parts. Everyone is VERY human and the dialogue mostly natural and with a lot of quiet humour ("449, yes, ma'am. Oh, 499? OK. Got it. We'll be right over.") such details really add.
Because the actors WERE men and women of that period. Those aren't costumes , that's the real attire they wore lol

Seems to me that he should have been court martialed as an active duty soldier that broke military confinement.

Yep , just the normal members of the public . I dealt with them in my job for over 40 years , and some I had to deal with you would not believe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have noticed that a lot of the people I meet are nuts, too. California is definitely worse.
The quirkiness of the side characters is what attracts me to this show.
Every single person that isn't a cop or a criminal is a nut. Been that way for over 60 years

….00:42.....I grew up in Santa Ana, 1950's and 1960's...and spent plenty of week-ends at Nu-Pike riding that roller coaster. All wooden, 2 tracks...it was the largest on the west coast for a long time...
I'm jealous. I lived in Long Beach for most of my 20's and half my 30's. Would see old photos of the Cyclone Racer here and there, got me real curious about it, and the way the Pike used to be long before I was born. I wish someone would create a virtual recreation of that coaster. I found one guy online that claimed to have made a 3D model, I was hoping to use that to create a virtual ride on it myself if no one else would, but the lousy bum wouldn't share the file with me.
It never fails - the bad guy runs at the cops firing madly. But once he's hit, he calls out for them to stop shooting because he's hit. Would he stop if THEY got hit? I'd love it if the cops yell back "I'll stop when my gun's empty!"
Or something like. When I reacquaint the rest of my bullets with their lonely Brothers that are stuck in you

Funny how Friday and partner jump out long before Hoffman gets to them, why not wait until he is even with them and grab him---love how it is a good and enjoyable story even if it does not always make sense.
Never knew Dragnet had any violence, just a stern demeanor & implied menace.

It's representative of actual police work. It had a goal of neither glorifying or vilifying the police officers. Many police officers go their entire life without shooting anyone.
It's one reason we should look closely at officers who have multiple shootings.

Love the way Friday rarely moves his arms when he walks. And, whenever they wait anywhere, Frank casually talks about his family and domestic things.
Detectives: trench coats and fedoras. White shirts, suits and ties.
Criminals: gray suits and ties.
Clerks and desk people: glasses.
Watch the car ride 19:39 they rock the car back and forth indicating it’s moving...special effects!
Guys who chose the Army over jail typically made very bad Soldiers. Believe me, I know.

1:40 Walking with their weapons reminded me of The Untouchables
in that scene I tagged Slats as a "red shirt" (doomed star trek security detail) ... then when they humanized him with his good will black eye I figured he was a goner for sure... ahh the good old days of the untouchables.
The Untouchables was another show that my dad watched that I like very much.

You should look up old James Cagney,and Humphrey Bogart movies. You think the criminals wore suits just for this show? Way back and it wasn't that long ago, people took pride in how they looked and dressed classy. Women wouldn't be seen in town even grocery shopping without make up,hair done, and looking their best. How one looks reflects a lot on the person. If you are sloppy all the time, well, what can I say. I remember dressing for Easter, getting a new white purse,white gloves, white patent leather shoes, a hat, a pretty dress. It was the only shopping we did outside of shopping for school. Even hanging out we dressed up.I didn't wear jeans for the first time until I was almost back in 1991. To this day I refuse to wear these clunky tennis shoes. I have a pair of ladies tennis shoes, the old canvas type with the pointed toe. That is how picky I was taught to be about how I look. Today, I can't afford much being a widow and on a fixed income. (My income is broken because if something is fixed,isn't it supposed to work? Mine doesn't so it's broken.). haha When I go to town I still make sure my make up is on and I try to dress as best as I can. Then when I get home, those clothes come off,and old clothes come on. We were taught that way as a kid. School clothes off,old clothes on. I have clothes that are over 20 years old,and still look good. Like I said, I don't have much. Boy I'd be screwed if I were asked on a date. I have nothing new and nice to wear, shoes that are over 5 years old. Then no money to get anything to wear either. haha It's a good thing this past 12 going on 13 years I've been by myself. I can't afford to go out on a date. haha

Interesting that this episode is almost exactly the same as the radio show version, except for a tiny twist in the ending narration.
In most cases, all of these episodes were exact duplicates of the radio version, down to the same dialog. In many cases, the actors used in the TV version were also the voices on the radio version (for a period of time, Dragnet was broadcast on both TV and radio.) When Dragnet was in its third incarnation with Morgan and Webb, they still used the same set of scripts from the radio days.
Hoffman had some balls .... Asking his arresting officers for money, then robbed a liquor store.....
9:08 - Friday answers the phone. On the other end:
Hello? (Pause) Hello? (Pause). Listen! There's been another robbery. We think it is Hoffman.
Friday hangs up. On the other end:
Hello? Gee! I wonder if they got the message. Maybe I should call back?

Being in a shootout with the cops . Then going into their office in a police head quarters. Cadging $4 off the officers that arrested you . You could not making it up !

Jeez, according to tv shows, these days there would be riot police in full gear. i found it amazing that there were only 4 "bare" cops and a tear gas gun. it must've been that way though, these stories were based on real events and the producers don't over dramatize. huh!

Wow. I know all those streets and addresses in Los Angeles. The city has changed in the last 70 years. But it always has over the centuries. From a Spanish mission area to a Mexican town to the second largest city in the US.
I have some of these on CDs, but the dialog on the discs (not the music of the introduction) is so faint it's almost impossible to hear. I'm glad these episodes are on TH-cam.

Harper Goff is the name of the actor. He was an unusual looking man, to say the least, but he was well-respected by many. He and his wife Flossie were married for about 60 years. He did work for Disney, designing sets, etc. If I remember correctly, he is listed as a Disney Legend.
Slats was played by Clarence Cassel (SP?). He is in a two or three of the Dragnet episodes.
Aren't they supposed to carry those rifles cracked open? Or did that start later after people got shot in the foot accidentally?
I think it's most likely that the actors didn't know how to use guns properly. Even today, actors frequently misuse guns in hilarious ways at times.
If Hoffman was paroled into the Army with a provision that he serve overseas, why didn't they hold onto him until he was shipped out?
Somehow after all those charges, attp murder of a peace officer X4, several armed and strongmened robberies, the army would not waant him. Even in the 50s.
You may have missed the line in the episode where they said he escaped from prison. He was being held.
He had the unusual skills of modern rock climbers. He may have used them to escape from military prison. It sounds like a wall was an open door to him.

jails dont make people better people. Jesus does. If we could only get to these people when we see them start to turn the wrong direction. It makes me sad to see them treated like animals. we are on a journey hoping to get into gods kingdom and take as many people with us as we can. That is the only reason we are here. Not to harass people that have gone by the wayside because no evangelist was available to reach them, and that is all our faults.
I have helped those who have fallen by the wayside .I was rewarded with a broken arm deaf in one ear severe tendon damage and eye damage .some people just won't ever change their ways of evil. Stay safe

They said the criminal was serving a life sentence in Folsom. I wonder if he was there when Johnny Cash played Folsom Prison? Could be he wasn't because they start out in one prison,and end up in others. Today they do that,but maybe back then they didn't. I'm not a criminal so I don't know.
He was an original member of Hal Roach Our Gang during the silent era. His name was Mickey Daniels. His last appearance was in the Our Gang Comedy "Fish Hooky" with sweetheart Mary Korman. I think you can find it on You Tube.

In the old days the Army wasn't committed to establishing freedom but a dumping ground for leftist budget bloating . That's why every war in US history was begun in a Democrat Presidential Administration . Even the recent war on terror actually began under Clinton although he refused to fight it as Arab Shieks and Princes paid him and his whore wife through the Clinton Crime Foundation , illegal campaign contributions and through CitiBank which was own by the Royal Saudi Investment Corporation through the Clinton Administration years . This is why Clinton and his HUD Secretary Andrew Coumo institutionalized FANNNIE and FREDDIE and set up the Housing Bubble Collapse with Sandy Weil then New York State Democrat Party Chairman and CEO of CitiBank . Since Nixon ended conscription and made the Armed Forces an all volunteer service the standards are very high . A clean record and even some college course work are required to get in nowadays . It is like trying to get any other government job and the pay is livable . I remember the Vietnam Era and an E-3 made $98 a month in those days .
Criminals in the armed forces were very common up until approximately 1975. You have been fed a load of propaganda about the nature of service men in the mid 1900s. Some shame was attached to being a soldier or sailor. It was considered by many the last resort for employment. My father, born in 1926, told me the US Army was largely made of hoodlums in WW 2.
I had a cousin who, in the mid '60s, got into a fight with another 19 year old and knocked out a couple of his teeth. The judge said "jail or the Army "; that's how he ended up in Vietnam.
I went in the Navy in the early 1990s and heard bad stories about the public and sailors (sailors and dogs keep off the grass). So I was surprised when people gave me respect when I told them I was in the Navy.

The goofy guy playing with the trains is Harper Goff -- who, among other things, designed the Disney theme parks. Another of his works was army camouflage patterns.
This episode should have been titled Dumb and Dummer. Everything a cop shouldn't do, those two coppers did!!!
Product placement? Jack Webb is rarely seen without a "cancer stick", "coffin nail" AKA cigarette. That could have something to do with the sponsors Chesterfield or Fatima cigarettes or it could just be that it's a prop to humanize him, a difficult task with Mr. Stick Up The Youknowwhat.

I love Dragnet! But it's nutty that Joe and his partner gave that creep money for a night out. That A-hole shot at the police, got a second chance to fix his life, only to go AWOL, and shoot at the police again!
