A quote by Ustad Salamat Ali Khan: "हमारे पंजाब में कहावत है- गाना पंजाब में जवान था, ग्वालियर में बूढा हो गया और महाराष्ट्र में उसकी हड्डी पसली रह गयी"
Sham Chaurasi Gharana (from the book "Tradition of Hindustani Music" authored by Dr. Manorama Sharma)
"The name of this Gharana is attributed to a place called Sham Chaurasi in Hoshiarpur of Punjab. Like the artists of Talwandi Gharana, the Sham Chaurasi Gharana also claim their association with the founder of Talwandi Gharana, Ustad Suraj Khan and Chand Khan alias Sudhakar and Diwakar, who were the disciples of Swami Haridas. It is also believed that both the brothers belonged to Brahmin family but due to the Muslim influence, they might have been converted Muslims. This is also contended that may be due to some economic reasons, they might have accepted Islam such as Tansen came to be known instead of Tanna Mishra. Music, those days was not considered a respectable art and to get fame, name, and money, they might have accepted Islam religion in order to get the recognition or patronage from the Muslim rulers."
