Well, what a response to your music critics. I’m singing in the voice god gave me, brilliant!

One of my favourite lines is "She's the puzzle piece behind the couch that made the sky complete" from Alison's starting to happen by Lemonheads

Your videos are an embodiment of what you presented here. You're discussing tricky spiritual matters in your own style and wording...your own voice. And in so doing you excel at it and surpass the plethora of "run of the mill" you tube channels on the subject of Zen. You're individuality is, by definition, outstanding.

Bonus dog in the video today! You're really spoiling us, Brad!
Really like the puzzle metaphor, by the way. the Buddhist sutras spend a lot of time discussing how sentient beings all have different proclivities and capacities, etc as a product of their unique karmic circumstances. For instance, a naga is going to be taught in a different way compared to a garuda or asura. Yet the scripture also stresses how all of that is ultimately empty. It seems like a contradiction, but it's not! I think the idea of a puzzle piece being fit into a greater whole works pretty well to consolidate the two views.

Interesting talk. The "puzzle piece" analogy rings true. Here's what comes up for me listening to this though. If a person is focusing on "being who they really are" (in a Relative sense, not so much a Zen Buddhist "Awakening" sense) and basically "trying to balance" between being "too much" of an individual or not enough of one... they're missing the point. To me, the "puzzle piece" analogy is helpful more in the sense of simply accepting one's form, shape, abilities etc and I think that's what you were getting at. It's actually a GOOD thing to work on improving one's skills (and form) within the framework we are given in this life. But we don't have to "try" to present ourselves as a unique individual, because we already are one. As much as we aren't. It's a trap. Not worth putting energy into.

Would be interesting to see you make a video on the breath...Years back, I ran across an old Hindu poetry book called "Speaking of Shiva". There was a line that went:
"I am the body. You are the breath."
    I think about that sometimes.

Just kidding. I really like your version. And you ARE a man of your word Brad. You said you'd steal that metaphor, and by golly you did!

hey people, i used to get a lot of these dis-eases...like serious sickness, to the point of having temperatures of 40-42 deegree celcius, which is dangerous for your health etc...and i started to do the wim hof method later on in my life...and i started to fast...what i found out is that, the practice cleanses up the lymphatic system and emotional system...we get sick since we are actually at dis-ease...since our mind and body are connected and whatever thoughts get produced, its because the body is connected to those thoughts and the body is connected with the emotions, because the body stores emotions...the cold showers and the breathing that wim teaches, which is as simple as zazen gets you out of these "sores"...
if you look at the word called "sore" it means inside your body is "sore" either from food that is not processed because you entered a lower vibrational state (meaning you have a lot of negative thoughts and emotions...and thoughts are always reflecting the emotional state that you're in) for a longer period of time than normally because it shook your definition and belief system and you were not at ease with yourself, you were at disease with yourself....but then again, the zen way is to just go through it since, youre going to die anyway, so deal with it, sit with it, there are clues in there also, theres no need to be perfect...and i know, some things are just the way they are and theres nothing you can do about it and we have to go through them...
but hey, i love to combine zazen and the wim hof method. so, thanks brad for the channel and the teachings!
i know i may not know what bothers you or anyone...i just know that what bothered me the most is that people tend to act like jerks and i always wanted to make a stable and balanced community around me.....when i was young, i did not know that so i got easily sick since i felt everything is sick around me....well, you know, since all the jerky jerky i too started to act like one since, like yeah - defend yourself....then zazen came in and it brought me back to balance, but the wim hof method gets me to understand myself and the perception of others on a deeper level. its fascinating, its like the cold exposure and deep breathing unlocks this quite profound intelligence and i am more happy so...
i recommend it to all :)

Delson armstrong is a virtuoso. It is possible he is coming from amnesia into personhood. So at first he thought he was an arahant and assumed that's the final destination. What he did not realize is that he cannot escape cause and effect. A baby is an arahant. With time it becomes an adult but it usually picks up deleterious defilements more then beneficial ones. I was born an arahant then picking up defilements I decided to transition back to arahanthood in order to see if more could be learned about the process of picking up defilements. But you do not appear to have done so. And yet you understand true self and he does not. This is because he is now having to pick up his defilements whereas you have been dealing with yours for some time. Normal can beat genius if normal puts in twice the effort. Here the struggle is enough. So current models in my opinion are working in the wrong direction. Arahathood pales in comparison to defilements. One is a baby. The other is an adult. My puzzle piece forced me to put in massive effort and i was fortunate enough to have natural talent again due to the nature of my puzzle piece. So what was the difference... he was natural but surrounded by many great teachers that was his section of the puzzle. I was natural but had no teachers because that was the nature of my section of the puzzle. In neither is there agency. Life mirrors this. A butterfly must break out of its caccon on its own or it will not flourish. The very act of breaking out of the cacoon is what makes it a butterfly. Seems someone tried removing his cacoon for him without understanding he was meant to be a butterfly. This could take him a while. When i hear someone is trying to attain arahathood i hear they are trying to achiece ignorance. There is much to gain from attaining ignorance but it is better to learn from experience. So that is why i think its still kind of cool cause it shows as humans we can do it and for those whose initial conditions were horrific it could be of immense benefit but the endgoal is not that. Returning to yesterday is not the same as living for today unless your incapable of remembering yesterday or eve. Worse had a yesterday that was a nightmare these two may be one and the same... in my opinion. For those that remember the yesterday and it was undefiled then have faith that where you are headed is infinitely far richer then where you came from. So we sacrifice arahathood to become an authentic human being.
