    "It's all fun and games until someone loses an I."
    I got this from Shinzen Young, but I don't think he originated it.

      Fortunately you quickly snap back into your ego again, and can get back to being preoccupied by the fun and games. Except now you can add the "ooh, I want to experience that again" to your list of games.

      @@gedfi Not always! I was able to repeat the experience 30 minutes a day, for three weeks before it faded. And I also took a couple of walks in the non-dual state, during that time.
      Some people don’t come back from it. There’s a whole bunch of people talking about living their non-dual lives on the Web.
      The question is, should we equate non-dualism with enlightenment, or is it just a stage along the way, or should we shift back and forth between the two (as one)?
      Here’s the best quote I have found to address this question:
      - Thomas Cleary (1983) "Entry Into the Inconceivable". p. 29.
      "What is here called true thusness of mind is associated with the noumenon, while so-called birth-and-death of mind is associated with phenomena. True thusness of mind means holistic awareness which does not cling to specific appearances but merely perceives the flux of being as simply "thus." Birth-and-death of mind refers to the awareness grasping particulars-thus in effect being born and dying along with the passing of transient phenomena, being born and dying with each thought, each mental construct, each psychological state or phase of personality. The two are said to interpenetrate because discriminating awareness cannot exist without the whole basic awareness underlying it. The sense of effacement and non-reliance is that noumenon and phenomena are interdependent and have no absolute existence; seeing in this way, one ultimately clings neither to the perspective of noumenon nor to that of phenomena. This point is parallel to the teaching of the Chan master Pai-chang Huai-hai [Huaihai], who spoke of using the so-called mirror awareness, corresponding to the "true thusness of mind," to avoid being affected by the feelings of the fluctuating mind, but he pointed out that abiding permanently in the mirror awareness is not right. …"

    My favorite glimpse at the nature of what the state of enlightenment means for someone is highlighted in the Hyakujo's Fox koan.
    The monk-turned-fox was asked "Does a man of enlightenment fall under the yoke of causation or not?". He answered no and was punished with five hundred rebirths as a fox. He asks Hyakujo for help who corrected him by saying "He does not ignore causation".
    So the answer wasn't yes but it wasn't a simple no either. It was "No, but he doesn't ignore causation". An enlightened being is free from the triple world of anger, greed, and delusion. They are free from the weight of cause and effect, but they don't ignore cause and effect. The experience sheds light on how the contradiction there (how you are free from cause and effect but still in it) isn't a contradiction.
    It changes the batteries in your Hakuna Matata from dollar store AAs to lifetime fusion batteries.

    If you've experienced the nondualistic nature of reality, the self, and consciousness, you know it. You know it with as much clarity as anything can be known. Checking the right boxes to fit other people's ideas of what an enlightened person is like is another matter altogether.

    There's a statement I read from a Steve Hagen book.. "Enlightenment is nothing more than realizing delusion." Sounds similar to Dogen's "Buddhas are enlightened about delusion, ordinary beings are deluded about enlightenment".

    Recently, I had an in-depth conversation of how do we know that we finally get it - the it. It’s not enlightenment experiences. How do treat people, yourself, animals, etc.? If we look at what the aim of what much of this practice is, the aim of our practice lay within the teaching, ie Precepts, etc. For instance, am I able to recognize poor ethics and behavior in myself, adopt the necessary changes, put them into action, and sustain that effort over time.
    There is no denying experiences just like there is no denying our actions and behavior. The latter is the key not our kensho or sartori experiences.

    • @JimTempleman
      @JimTempleman 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      One thing I like about your suggested approach is that one could apply it in to different religions to see how well a person followed the "precepts" of their own religion.
      It would also be interesting to compare different religions purely in terms of their "precepts".

    I tend to think that as long as you live in this world as a functional part of the world, these experience will only come in glimpse. It's about what you do from these glimpse. Also the one true glimpse is ABSOLUTE, Still, timelessly eternal. Well that's pretty but we are here. And my best guess is "IT" wanted to experience multiplicity and here we are.

      If you read Brad's books, he briefly brushes over this a lot, which Buddhist philosophy also brushes over a lot (The Diamond Sutra is a notable example). You are both enlightened and the entire universe, and everything you do affects everyone else, whether you realize it or not. Just like how someone on the other side of the world is probably reading the news paper right now, whether you realize it or not. The universe, your own body, even your own mind, does not ask for your permission to be as they are. Right now you are enlightened, and also digesting food, and also your body is killing off a few cancer cells, where they are, nobody knows. You don't realize any of this.

    In response to the dude's comments about you commenting on depression/anit-depressants: What people don't understand about psychology is that their definitions/diagnosis/treatment of depression (and other "disorders') are NOT based on physical abnormalities--i.e., it is not a medical matter. The "chemical imbalance" hypothesis has been debunked countless times. Anyone's concept of the mind is just as good as psychology's concept of the mind. No one is a "medical expert" or "trained professional'" when it comes to matters of the mind (We don't even know where the mind is!--or if it's a thing or fact in the first place).

      Yes, exactly. You’ve basically posted what I was gonna write, but then I changed my mind and didn’t post anything.
      I would also ad that the “chemical imbalance” idea is not only just ridiculous pharmaceutical ad copy, it’s also a perfect example of reductive materialism that suggests humans are nothing but meat machines in a random universe. This is clearly nonsense that has also been debunked.

    • @pajamawilliams9847
      @pajamawilliams9847 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The DSM has slowly been evolving towards a symptom>medication treatment similar to body medicine by rejecting actual science and actual treatment almost since it's inception. This allows them to sell more copies, like a new edition of D&D every 15 years like clockwork. Every doctor, therapist, and lawyer has to buy a new copy. If the ADA was actually in the business of helping people the focus would be on treatment plans.

    Everything Alien is Special to the Aliens. Our Experience right now isn't Alien to us thus we don't regard it as Special, An Alien's Experience in the Moment isn't Alien to them, so they don't regard it as Special. Both the Aliens Visit us and we want to see the Aliens for the "Specialness" of each other's moments. Enlightenment is seeing the Specialness in your Moment right here and now.
