This piece belongs to opera treasures! I love this opera and especially final a lot! I always burst in tears... It´s great to hear Joseph before his terrible desease when his voice was the highest quality! I´ve been in love with him all my life and I struggled when he was so ill... They both are so great! Thanks for posting it...

This is thrilling. Everything that has been said about the chemistry of the two singers is true. And how nice to see the WHOLE video, including the audience reaction at the end. So many youtube opera vids end when the voices do - cutting out the musical finale and the ovation/reaction. In many ways the best bit about this video is the way the camera focuses on Levine at the end of the piece, from 7.50-8.17. It's just - as I say - thrilling!

wow! what a treat! Tell me something....did Jose Carreras'' voice carry well at the Met? Some people had commented that his voice didn't carry too well at the Met? I'm sure that's utter nonsense! I saw his Carmen from 1987 at the Met on dvd and it sounded like his voice carried well then

I'll never understand why Carreras pushed his voice to try to become something he wasn't at all, and in the process always sounded (esp later) like he was trying to hoist it out there beyond its capabilities. He is not naturally a big voiced. I always wished he had stuck to lighter fare.

We must enjoy looking at the best years of Jose Carreras he gave us a lot, even knowing that it was not allways the best repertoire for his voice, but...Alfredo Kraus expert in treating his ow voice, recomended, to have a long carrier you should sing with the interest, keeping the capital. Carreras although admiring Kraus, did not share his opinion and said: I would rather sing whatever I like, than singing all my life Traviatas, Rigoletos, Lucias, don Pasquale and similar. What a pity that Carreras obstinate to imitate Pipo Di Stefano in his erroneous repertoire and voice technique, we should follow his marvelous early recordings

Watch how they interpret and become transformed by the music at the end. Their stances change, they can't help but act a bit according to the opera's plot (the characters are going to their deaths). Great music interpreted by great artists!

    Hi
Who the heck are all you Voice Trashers? It makes me sick to read all these judgemental, condescending jibes. These are great artists! Warriors of our Art. To put them in the muck of public disdain is beyond dishonorable. I also have heard them both live. Stunning voices. But, NO ONE can stay at a youthful peak forever. And this is live, Not a studio polished recording. They are wonderful artists. And as for the closet tenors throwing mud...I have done this duet many times. IT IS HARD!!! It takes everything in you to roar through it. All you Queens of the Night with your slings and arrows, leave Jose alone, and go take a voice lesson! You might become better informed!

@russpenney5775 in what key did you sing this many times? It truly IS a lot more difficult without the downward transposition they used here. To be fair, I don’t think Jose COULD have sung this in the higher key. Although Tucker often took this down, it was a choice. He sang it often in concert in the higher key and nailed the final (unwritten) B every time.

  • @chaiter1
    @chaiter1 14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There are some cuts in this duet, and I don't know if this was necessary.
Jose has in this point already put strain on his voice.Diction here comes before cantilena line, perhaps because he strived toward a declamatory drammatic style.
So, some dryness that was in the voice becomes more pronounced.
And probably some subtle changes in his health before the full blown leukemia that came a few years later are already affecting his voice.
    Still, a very good performance.

While Carreras was woefully lacking in vocal amplitude and ring not to mention his struggles with the top notes he was at least pretty, Caballe was approaching her declining years while her waistline was in ascent! A lyric tenor--Gigli comes to mind--can handle Chenier even in a house the size of the old met but a Gigli is in a different league than a Carreras since HE KNEW HOW TO SING. When this fiasco was sung(?) Carreras was years from the illness he suffered in the late 90s.

I was at the Met for this performance. Miss Caballe should give lessons on operatic acting. She is the mistress of restraint. The character comes from within, and from the music. She doesn't have to run around and do cartwheels as the singers of today do. They think they are acting: i.e. Anna Netreko. No, Monserrat was totally in character and conveyed the essence of her role just by raising an eyebrow, or turning her head slightly.

What marvelous singing from one pf the greatest sopranos of the last century and with Bernabe Marti, her tenor husband, a mentor to Jose Carreras. She was indeed a gracious prima diva. After one of her concerts, I said to her, "Mme. Caballe, you don't need me to tell you how beautifully you sang tonight"--to which she replied, "Oh, I do need for you to tell me so! I always leave the stage wondering if I have given my best." Her pride in Jose Carreras's singing is evident in the video of him singing "La dolcissima effigie" with her in "Adriana Lecouvreur." She could not help mouthing the lines as he sang the aria:

He's much too light for "Chenier" and as expected both are distant sounding with unclear diction. However, the singers attempting these roles today are I'm sad to say much much worse. To truly appreciate this duet one needs to listen to Tebaldi along with Tucker or Del Monaco (Met '60 and New Orleans '53, respectively).

I adore Caballe and her voice, on this occasion however I have a serious reservation: her pronunciation seems somewhat sloppy, exactly as it did on the DECCA recording of ANDREA CHENIER with Pavarotti, under Chailly. Shame, as this is my favourite opera, but otherwise splendid 👍👍

bastiani47 I don't suppose many people noticed. I was there and just enjoyed the splendour of it all. Be thankful that Madame Caballe lived

@pproust Bastian probably takes a score to the opera and tuts over a supposed wrong note, just to try to look clever.

These two Spaniards obviously loved each other, and Carreras was so handsome here. But they can talk about Kathy Battle and Jessye Norman being difficult; in my personal experience, she was absolutely the most demanding diva I have witnessed on stage. She had total disdain for everybody including the orchestra and the conductor. The voice was magnificent, but I think Levine was secretly glad when she cancelled, which she did all the time.

Shirley Verret says she was a very nice and fun person to be around. Everybody’s got opinions.

Only if you can handle not very tasteful bovine singing with a lisp.
