Anyone who says a negative comment on this 2 man crew is simply a troll....or drunk/on drugs. This is outstanding, precision teamwork. Excellent chain man with exacting chain action. Other floorhand superb. NO WASTED action. EVERY move served a purpose. My hat off to these two fine professionals.
Very polished performance. Both knows their job as well as the others job allowing them to work very efficiently. Definitely spent many hours working together. No substitute for a well oiled crew.
Reminds me of when I was Ruff necking in northern AB. It was hard work but at the time pay was good, food was good, beer was good and the body got into tip top shape. Can be very miserable work though especially when the weather and other workers don't co-operate. A great experience overall though!.
Forget about people that worked on triples dogging your rig. Anyone who's worked a rig knows the bigger the rig, the easier the work. You guys are all stars! I'd shake your hand.
That looks fun. I drilled 6" production blast holes underground for 5 years. Very similar to this. Everything is based on the same principle. Always wanted to work on an oil rig.
I love throwin chain when I have a good crew. There is no technology that can replace a good driller and his hands. Get er in tha hole hands. Good job guys...I'm a West Texas hand and it's not rare to use the chain. Alot of drillers that I've worked for would rather me throw the chain than use the Kelley Spinners.
Throwin chain isnt very safe, .... if you haven't much experience, do not respect it, or work with people that are sparsely experienced. I've been drilling for 3 years...on rigs for 10. Kids that come out to work now, dont understand how lucky they are, to have the technology they do today. Good to see some guys still know how to work, OR aren't scared of it,as most of the younger generation is now. We used to run 4 man crews, no loader, got the job done faster, and found time to keep rig clean
As long as they have some sort of reflective material ...I run in the oil patch trucking the drill stem and casing to the rigs and moving rigs.we need that too plus the H2S etc.. etc.. GODI etc.. etc...
@pantsarehard the chain is a "old" fast and efficient way to spin that pipe together and use the tongs to tighten it up to specs. The newer rigs may use a set of hydraulic tongs that spin the pipe and tighten with a pull of a lever.
yes, thx. and i don't resist change, i just decide whether it's good for the rig or not. like the time they wanted to put a pipe spinner on our rig. it lasted about a month before it almost hurt my motorman. haven't used it since. so thats my point. it sounds good. get rid of the ever so dangerous spinning chain and try and stuff a pipespinner on an already crowded floor. safety?...nope...in our case a hazard.
how about driller, derrick, motors, floor 1, floor 2, leasehand. seen w/ asst. driller, asst. derrick & loader as well. hence some rigs will "3 man" it on connections. all i know is "2 man" connections working on singles.mind you, we tried using a pipespinner that required "3 man" connections. little to say the pipespinner lasted about a month (leasehand didn't show up) and then back to the spinning chain.
Yeah-! Looks like the good old days... Two floor hnds and spinning chain. If the driller adjusted the Hydromatic a little, he'd get the pipe falling faster. Set a trip time for the other crews to try and beat. Burn those brake pads! They make 'em new every day...
The key is the rope tail on the end of the chain. When I was a chain hand I had one fall off, and the driller didn't want to stop to affix a new one. I threw that chain exactly twice without a tail, and got whacked like a red-headed step child by the end of it both times. Uh, no. I walked off the floor until the driller came to his senses. Duh.
@misplacedwrench actually telescopic doubles are the most utilized rig in the oil patch right now, there aren't enough to go around, triples are going outa style real fast! Takes to long to rig up and tear out ur average triple
Exactly....and damn...people make it out to be this horrible place where you get get killed or maimed at any moment and we shouldn't do it because it's not worth it! i know it's definitely been worth it for me since now i'm pushing. and dangerous? not from what i've seen.(i actually seen more guys get hurt in shop class in highschool)
To throw the chain, or make up the joint? the less wraps i put on the harder you have hold on and pull back on that chain, but it would probly be harder to throw more wraps good like that, I usually go three wraps. LOL this one guy on a diferent video says he can can throw 49 wraps! amazing must be a long spinnin chain hey!
people go on and on about how dangerous this is but i don't see it. sure i've got hurt a couple times, nothing serious. but mostly because they wanted "change". my biggest point is that the industry is in need of workers and people are scaring them off w/ stories of guys getting hurt and killed. thx
It's time to shed the "fuck, fight and trip pipe" persona. most guys i know in the oilpatch have families to feed and mortgages to pay. Here in Alberta we are changing our image to attract workers to the industry. It has come a long way since i started. there are still alot of guys unwilling to conform but i think overall its going well.
so I have a few questions on the drilling aspect. im going to school to become a petroleum geologist not a derrick hand so, what is going on with the shoe that is being put in when connecting the pipes? also what's with the chain being wrapped around the pipe?
The chain is attached to a winch and that pulls on the chain to spin the pipe threads together. The tongs are used to apply the final torque to the threaded connection. I'm not sure of what shoe you are referring to. You might be referring to the slips(3 wedges) that are used to keep the pipe stem from falling down the hole as the rig hands connect the kelly to the next joint of drill pipe.
damn r2d2 had to write a novel for everyone to read. hell, delete the obi-1-kanobi message there r2d2!! sure there has been bad accidents and deaths in the industry. Um, being a soldier, firefighter, cop etc is dangerous as well.....we just make more money....thats all. i don't know about the rest of you but i feel pretty damn safe on my rig. riggin is the life
ok, i notice a hint of sarcasm there.you don't get it i guess. i'm sure you got lots of experience and think you know better than most. but when i comes to what i know through experience and practice, being openminded is neccessary butwhen it comes to ensuring guys don't get hurt, its not open for discussion. change hurts guys, i've seen it, i preach it. we don't change the way we do things(the safe way) and noone gets hurt. hence i have 2000sfty days and my rig has 1600.
There's no worm. He got his head caught in the chain and the driller hit the gas. End of the worm. When I worked as a Roughneck up in Wyoming back in the 70's, this long hair hippie dude got his hair caught in the chain and the driller let 'er rip It pulled off his head. Another guy on the rig told me he walked almost to the dog house before he collapsed. Said it totally freaked everyone out.
God the good old days throwing chain only them boys who chunked chain know what it is on rig floor now all rigs have fancy top drives an air slips an not to forget the dumbass st-80🤦♂️
i've met guys with 20-30yrs exp that relly don't know shit dude, honestly. i've worked right from leasehand to rig manager on conventional singles. sure i've seen some stupid shit over the years. but that made me a better driller/push because i didn't want to do things like that. watch "riggin on a single" and notice we make & break with 2 sets of tongs. all our pipe is torqued to spec and we wear all our ppe. fuck we went as far as to put handrails on top of our doghouse!
All of you guys are so cool!!! My boyfriend's a Driller in ND on the Bakken. Rig 23, Cyclone Drilling. So much respect for what you guys do!
Stress Belden They've worked together for awhile that's for sure
Gotta respect the chain,I’ve been there and done that! Still have all my fingers too
Very polished performance. Both knows their job as well as the others job allowing them to work very efficiently. Definitely spent many hours working together. No substitute for a well oiled crew.
I'm drunk and this shit is not easy
holy fuck
con cuidao
Very good operation, close quarters. Chain hand: good tight wraps gets it of quickly. Great crew, even the 2 we do not see, and the tooley.
Damn. That is truly tough work. You deserve a hell of alot more than bankers do.
that's the best chain hand here on TH-cam, only on that knows to slap the wraps back down close to the tool joint,,,
Reminds me of when I was Ruff necking in northern AB. It was hard work but at the time pay was good, food was good, beer was good and the body got into tip top shape. Can be very miserable work though especially when the weather and other workers don't co-operate. A great experience overall though!.
Happy you enjoyed my home Province of oil country
Forget about people that worked on triples dogging your rig. Anyone who's worked a rig knows the bigger the rig, the easier the work. You guys are all stars!
I'd shake your hand.
Glad to see somebody actually get the chain over the tool joint. I used to throw the chain on rig 26 for Zapata offshore 90's. well done
Fun to watch, I worked as a motorman in Alberta back in 1977-80 and remember it fondly.
Pure skill and guts!
Drillers are a breed of their own!
Look after yourselves and keep drilling!
That looks fun. I drilled 6" production blast holes underground for 5 years. Very similar to this. Everything is based on the same principle.
Always wanted to work on an oil rig.
Now thats how it's done! Thumbs up!
I love throwin chain when I have a good crew. There is no technology that can replace a good driller and his hands. Get er in tha hole hands. Kickass connection. Those are some cute little tong ya got there
Wow i haven't seen chain in like 8 years we use a pipe spinner..and yet we still get hurt go figure!
Mike bsd12
looks like HT40 DP. Loving the spinning chain...all our rigs use a tds and power tong.
HOLY SHIT NICK!!! thats super wicked. this is ILLogic. damn you gatta have some strength for that crap. nice man.
Fuck yeah good connection there boys. I miss the rigs.
So Cool, I miss the rigs.
Badass Connection Boys !!! Keep It Up !!!
Whoooo thos boys are killin it 👍👍
Excellent, Luis from Tabasco. I work for CABSA. Congratulations.
Nice job guys,.. nice and smooth
Really impressive, skilled....
Well service for life

I'd hire them.. good hustle, men!
Now we can see how dangerous a job this is.
@pantsarehard the chain is a "old" fast and efficient way to spin that pipe together and use the tongs to tighten it up to specs. The newer rigs may use a set of hydraulic tongs that spin the pipe and tighten with a pull of a lever.
Haha these guys make it look easy.
stay safe guys! and keep up the good work
Whoever disliked never got their hands dirty.
Man that looks dangerous!
nice work!
wow that looks super dangerous.. crazy job!
@MrDriller666
i guessing that is a compliment...this i wicked old school riggin......diggin some evil ditch up here in western canada...excellent vid.
thats a bold statement to make.
yes, thx. and i don't resist change, i just decide whether it's good for the rig or not. like the time they wanted to put a pipe spinner on our rig. it lasted about a month before it almost hurt my motorman. haven't used it since. so thats my point. it sounds good. get rid of the ever so dangerous spinning chain and try and stuff a pipespinner on an already crowded floor. safety?...nope...in our case a hazard.
Make em bite, wormy
Nice connection hands!
nice rig footage
I tink hes watchin the blocks and derick man, my driller is the same way
hey wheres the sparks coming off the spinning chain, theres none, how the hell am i gonna light my ciggarette man?
how about driller, derrick, motors, floor 1, floor 2, leasehand. seen w/ asst. driller, asst. derrick & loader as well. hence some rigs will "3 man" it on connections. all i know is "2 man" connections working on singles.mind you, we tried using a pipespinner that required "3 man" connections. little to say the pipespinner lasted about a month (leasehand didn't show up) and then back to the spinning chain.

fuck yeah, good work. lmfao, engineers? they RIGGERS man
like to see the motorman throw in the slips from the top of the V-door, with a flip in the slips
Duh.
That rig looks like a pretty small one. You should see ours. 110 National!
Good job
@misplacedwrench actually telescopic doubles are the most utilized rig in the oil patch right now, there aren't enough to go around, triples are going outa style real fast! Takes to long to rig up and tear out ur average triple
Nice chain flipping
great to see pd rigs iam on rig 654 the service rig
Fuck a top drive and an iron ruff neck.... nothing like an old kelly rig with catheads... real ruffneckn.. nice video good work fellows
Exactly....and damn...people make it out to be this horrible place where you get get killed or maimed at any moment and we shouldn't do it because it's not worth it! i know it's definitely been worth it for me since now i'm pushing. and dangerous? not from what i've seen.(i actually seen more guys get hurt in shop class in highschool)
nice connection guys!
Hell yeah!
Я хотел бы ваочию пообщаться с одним из них.Мне кажется это лучшие специалисты в своём деле.
good job
Dats' the way ya do dat!
Looks to me like it's wintertime in this vid. every rigger knows you don't dope out on a trip in the wintertime....it freezes and is hard to spin in.
To throw the chain, or make up the joint? the less wraps i put on the harder you have hold on and pull back on that chain, but it would probly be harder to throw more wraps good like that, I usually go three wraps. good job..
was that tubing?... nice handles on the tongs btw )
this is in canada real men
Enough wraps? Nicely done though!
do this positions fill up quick or is there always openings? and also how long does a regular joe need to train before he's ready to do the job?
Nice work with the chain. Its an artform thats dying fast.
Holy that looks like dangerous work, one person out of position and ouch..
They just get pissed because Canadian rig hands can out work any rig hand anywhere......
fast and very effective....pros!
What is the purpose of the chain? To secure it so it gets connected real tight.. ? I always thought that look cool when they do that.
@SH4DES1 Good for you, I'm a Financial Advisor myself. There wayyy too much drugs on the rigs in Canada, especially Alberta.
Класс! Молодцы канадцы.
カッコいい!!
WOW !
lol . kid moving string Almost fell when he tried to make a connection.
SLIPS!!!!!!!!!
nice work ... how we apply on rig i have just two theory not expirence in drilling

just to bad to see that it takes that many raps to spin it in

so dangerous, easy going ...
thank you
