  • An abandonship drill, also known as an emergency evacuation drill, is a safety procedure conducted on board a jack-up rig to prepare personnel for the event of an emergency where immediate evacuation from the rig is necessary.
During an abandonship drill, the crew and other personnel on the rig go through a simulated emergency scenario to practice the actions and procedures required to safely abandon the rig. The drill is designed to ensure that everyone understands their roles and responsibilities, knows the evacuation routes and procedures, and can respond effectively in a real emergency.
Here are some key aspects of an abandonship drill on board a jack-up rig:
Alarm and Notification: The drill begins with the sounding of an alarm or announcement to alert everyone on the rig that the drill is taking place. The alarm system may include sirens, whistles, or other loud and distinctive signals.
Assembly Points: Designated assembly points are predetermined locations on the rig where personnel should gather after the alarm is sounded. These points are typically located in areas where personnel can safely board lifeboats or other evacuation means.
Emergency Equipment: The drill involves familiarizing personnel with the location and use of emergency equipment such as life jackets, immersion suits, and other personal protective gear. Personnel are instructed on how to properly don and use this equipment.
Evacuation Routes: Crew members are trained to identify and follow the designated evacuation routes to reach the assembly points. These routes are marked with clear signage and may involve stairways, ladders, or other means of access.
Lifeboat/Life Raft Drills: Depending on the rig's safety equipment, personnel may practice launching and boarding lifeboats or life rafts during the drill. This includes understanding the procedures for entering and securing the life-saving equipment and launching it safely into the water.
Roll Call and Accountability: Once personnel have reached the assembly points, a roll call is typically conducted to account for all individuals. This ensures that everyone has successfully evacuated or identifies any missing personnel who may require assistance.
Review and Evaluation: After the drill, a debriefing session is often conducted to review the performance, identify areas for improvement, and address any questions or concerns.
It is important to note that the specific procedures and equipment used in an abandonship drill may vary depending on the rig's design, regulations, and company policies. Rig personnel should always familiarize themselves with the specific procedures and requirements of the rig they are working on to ensure their safety in case of an emergency.

I have seen this renjith kumar driller. He was a roustabout in aban offshore rig in Mumbai in 2004. This oim.seems familiar too. Actually all these drills are only a paper work for auditing. Nobody really cares. Just when you hear go to muster station turn your card give head count to whoever is taking and after all clear go back to room. Some rigs have safety meetings after drill. It gets boring really. I was in offshore rig as a doctor from 1989 to 2023. Really fed up.
