Greenville, NC SUCKS! I have, sadly, had to live my entire life there. ECU and Vident (ie the government) own practically everything now. After the 1999 flood, ECU & Vident started snatching up property left and right. Using government grants and bogus "beautifying" campaigns to do so. This stupid video is cherry picking crap to talk about. Why don't you talk about the East side of Greenville. Where literally thousands of low income families were forced out of their homes, just so ECU can put up more pointless expensive college dorms and parking lots. Or talk about the acres of formal trailer park and farm land that is nothing but gated dorm campuses and deserted land?! "J C Park" was once the beautiful and open town commons. It was once the focal point of events and shows. Folks use to be able to enjoy it's wide open space for walking, relaxing and fishing. Now it's littered with a ridiculous "safe zone" play area containing a hard rubber gloor (b/c heaven forbid a kid scraps a knee on dirt!), pointless monuments/sculptures, a giant restroom building, and countless crime!! I could go on and on about the crap-fest that is Greenville. It has one of the highest crime rates in Eastern NC, as well as one of the highest unemployment rates. Easily one of the most noise ridden cities as well. At this point it is mostly drunk and doped college students with zero regard for heritage, privacy, respect. I swear, mist of the drivers are college idiots that can't stay off their phones nor obey the most basic of traffic laws! Once a quiet and respectful tobacco, pepsi, and bar-b-que city. Greenville has become noisy college town littered with crime and illegal aliens. Making Kinston and Tarboro look more and more inviting every freaking year!! Oh, and screw the comments talking about Mr.Beast. other then helping two community centers and the boys and girls club (which is STILL not growing), he's done nothing for the city. He doesn't even live in the city. Remember when he destroyed his brother's house with elephant paste two years ago? Yeah, that took place in the tiny town of Winterville that hugs Greenville's western boarder. And that house, which his brother was renting at the time, IS STILL DESTROYED!! Other then gutting it shortly after his stunt, Mr. Beast has not restored it! I know because I have to drive past it every freaking day to get to work! They didn't even bother boarding up the front window until a few months ago! I still have footage sitting on my phone for a before and after video, but there is no after video if he doesn't fix the freaking house! The house has become a ugly blight on a small but lovely road of a small town. Jimmy (aka Mr. Beast), and his crew, could not care less about Greenville. Most if them grew up in Greenville, but they no longer live there. They just use it as a rare backdrop so don't learn where they actual live. My guess is they moved to Raleigh or New Bern.
Beast does live there and is renovating a former warehouse and converting it to a video and media production studio. I would assume he travels a lot for both business and pleasure. Wouldn't you, if had that kind of coin? I agree, however, that he could do more with charitable and civic contributions; to give back to the community in a permanent way rather just give things away for video views. He can do both, and at his level of income, he should be doing both. You'd think he'd do it for the write-offs at least. None of the flooded land (it's the north part of town, not east, by the way) has dorms on them. Nearly all of the land that was flooded badly is still vacant, as was the intent. It's uninhabitable. You might be thinking of the apartment complexes near Hastings Ford and the one across from the fairgrounds, but those are owned and operated by private corporations, not the state or ECU. These complexes cater to college students by renting by the room, but they are not ECU dormitories. There are complexes like this all over town because - get this - it's a college town, and most students want to live off campus for various reasons. You have to understand that every town has its good and its bad. There are trade-offs. What Greenville, NC lacks in activity and overall job opportunities (if you're in just about any medical field, you'll be fine), it makes up for with affordability. You can still get a decent single family home in Greenville/Winterville for less than $300K, and rent, though it has gone up, is still far cheaper than bigger and "more exciting" cities. Like you said, you've lived here and nowhere else. I have moved around. Don't know if I'm staying here, but I accept the trade-offs for every place I've lived. No place is perfect. I encourage you to move to a couple of different places and try out some new digs, get some perspective. Any time I even visit a town I try to look at it as if I could live there rather than think it's cool because it's unknown to me. I go to all different parts of town and go into stores, and ask myself: Could I deal with this traffic on a daily basis? Is this town easy to navigate? Could I deal with the attitudes of these people on a daily basis? Does it have the things and places I like to frequent? All kinds of things to consider when looking at a town as a resident rather than a visitor. Chances are that if you live in Greenville and go visit Raleigh or Charlotte, you're going for fun. Reality is that if you lived in those other places, you'd still be going to work, still be sitting in traffic, and still have bills to pay. You're day-to-day wouldn't change much. If it's small town atmosphere you're desiring, then small towns certainly have their own special kind of B.S. that goes on. And there is local political and government shenanigans everywhere else too. You're not going to escape that. But if you truly hate where you live, then give it a go where you really feel like you should be living. Why stay where you're (apparently) miserable?
You should check the census population numbers before making an ignorant statement like this. It's not Raleigh or Charlotte, but it's been steady growth with continuing building of affordable housing.
Greenville is DEAD! The people are rude, nasty, hateful and disrespectful. The place is dirty. The ONLY thing going for Greenville is ECU and that isn’t that great. The parks are laughable. The museum is a joke. The mall isn’t even a real mall. The place is boring and dead. People do not entertain there anymore because of all the violence and shootings. If you’re going to post anything, post the truth. You southerners love to lie.
