Hello guys, I'm from Germany and in the town I'm living in we had a British garrison up to the late 90s.
A friend of mine recently retired as branch manager of a banking institute here.
So he told me a story:
Many british soldiers had accounts with his bank and every few month there were 1 or 2 soldiers who way over extended financially. Such cases had to be reported to their commanding officers or quartermasters or something.
It always ended in the soldier being send to the Falklands for half a year. Extra Pay and no opportunity to spend it.😉

I am from Argentina. Was 9 when the war happened. This video doesn't bother me. What bothers me is the decision from my government at the time to invade the islands just to extend their grip on power. Actually it helped us getting rid of the military junta, but opened a different can of worms that still haunt us. And the Brits too.

As an enthusiastic fencer myself (Epee fighter, I'm not that good, but I compete in national tournaments from time to time), I can say without a doubt that the RAF corporal wasn't just a sore loser, but also someone who had no respect for the rules of fencing.
You see, since fencing has been around so long, it has lots of old and archaic traditions, like saluting your opponent before and after a match. Throwing your weapon down and storming off is a massive no-go. I know someone who threw his weapon at the ground in anger after a bout, and they got slapped with a hefty fine and a 3y ban from any national events.

Getting saluted is fun. Back during the last few days of the recruit stage back in '95 at Jørstadmoen I had just gotten my NATO sweater (civilian clothes, but accepted worn over the uniform during off-hours. It's usually bloody cold in Norway in March) and was heading to the camp cinema one evening, when a newly arrived recruit saluted me. Made my day. :) Then when I finished the recruit stage (after 3 months) I got transferred into the real military at Bardufoss military airport in northern Norway to serve my remaining 9 months. Shortly after I arrived I saluted a sergeant who then looked at me like I was an alien trying to communicate using weird hand signals. That was the last time I saluted anyone. Literally. :) Thanks for coming to my TED-talk.

I only went there once, and it WAS by choice. The Air Bridge was the most expensive flight I've ever payed for. Friend of mine was overhauling the comms for The Falklands via Cable & Wireless and I visited for a vacation. Left the UK in a heat wave and arrived just after the Mt Pleasant had reopened after being locked in after a blizzard. Enjoyed meeting the 'Stills' (so named because the armed forces had been ORDERED to not refer to the islanders as 'Bennies' so, in military fashion, the term migrated to 'Still Bennies' and was shortened). Always amused me as the islanders themselves always referred to themselves as 'Bennies' (due to many wearing the Beanie woollen hat made famous by the Crossroads soap character of the '70's). A funny place to 'holiday', especially considering the number of landmines you can be surrounded by. The week before I got there a cow had wandered into a mine field that had been 'illegally' double-shotted with an antipersonnel mine OVER an antitank mine. The resultant explosion made for a 'Blackadder Goes Forth' joke (What do you do if you step on a landmine?). Had a great time on a 'VIP' jolly put on for the islanders on the Type 42 Destroyer, HMS Gloucester.

The main mess (accommodation) complex at Mount Unpleasant was referred to as 'The Death Star' because every facility is connected by long tunnels to keep out the winter weather. It is also telling that no alcohol in the main bar is served in glasses or bottles. Why? Because you cannot use a disposable plastic cup in the inevitable bar fight.

Jingles' discussion about pay made me think of my father-in-law and his hospital commander. My FIL was admin for the Cam Rahn Bay hospital in Vietnam for three years. His hospital commander was a surgeon who had been a fighter pilot in WWII and Korea. He also went out with dawn patrol in Vietnam and did surgery in the afternoons at the hospital. My FIL discovered that the hospital commander had joined the Navy at the end of WWI at the age of 15 (yes, that put him in his 60s in Vietnam). The short period of service before his under-age status got him kicked out had never been recorded. So, my FIL, who hated all paymasters, got it on the record, which then required the pay people to recalculate all of the 2-year fogeys (pay raises) the hospital commander had received all the way back through Vietnam, Korea, and WWII. It came out to a tidy sum.

Around 1990 we convinced a matelot that he'd spend most of his time in the Falklands picking up penguins. Because they look at the planes flying over, and keep looking until they overbalance backwards and can't get back up.
He thought that for at least a fortnight, until someone couldn't hold back the laughter any more :)

Thanks Jingles, life's been rough and I'm not sleeping well but I really needed this little distraction this very early morning. And the Falkland's was the perfect setting for this story ever since I was kid and I watched the Falkland's War actually happen on TV ( I thought the reporting was pretty good back in those days ) I've been fascinated by the history of the Falkland's Islands ( and NO Argentina they're NOT the Malvinas' ) when you've spent as much time and money there as the UK has its yours not some other guys who just wants the gas and oil resources.

similar story with my father in the US Army his last assignment was an instructor teaching Senior Army ROTC at the University of Memphis in Tennessee, the closest base and where we lived was a US Navy, my father was Master Sergeant (E-8) but when he have to do things in on base like haircut ect, all the Navy sailors and NCOs would get out the way cause they mistook rank for a Command Sergeant Major (a specialized E-9) this was back in the early 90s, only Army family living in the senior NCO housing area

Thinking of people wanting to go to the Falklands, a bunch of bootnecks from one of the pubs that I drink in went back there on a memory lane thing, they were last 'Down South' in 82 and there were noticeably less people shooting at them this time, in all seriousness, it was a very emotional journey as some of the lads that they went out with didnt come back

I guess that the only reason the Cruise ships visit Stanley was the chance for the tourists to visit the white sand beaches and maybe watch a penguin set off a landmine!
But seriously, the mines are now gone, the penguins and white sand are still there and it's flipping cold.
The occasional Argentine tourist visits the sites of the Battlefields to plant their flags and take a few pictures as if they've conquered it again, but other than that, the Islands are still as beautiful to a naturalist as they could be. Still have oodles of friends in the Falklands, many of them in their Government and they're lovely people. Proud of the islands and their heritage going back 7 or 8 generations. Resiliently British!

Jingles, while you were getting saluted in the Falklands the first time, I was at the Defense Language Institute in Monterrey, CA. At that time there was a British Royal Navy Officer and a Royal Navy Chief Petty Officer there as well. Now we didn't know which was which, so to be on the safe side, we'd salute either one we'd see (when in doubt if there's something shiny on the hat, you salute). The Chief was very cool about it and would return it and tell us "you don't actually need to salute me". But again, knowing there was also an RN Officer on base, we never took the chance (and no, I never saw them enough to remember what each of them looked like).

For future reference officers jackets are double breasted with 6 buttons and senior enlisted are double breasted with 4. Plus the officers have rings on their sleeves/shoulders.

For half a year I was a tortoise-sitter for 11 armored lizards of various sizes in the camp. I also blew stuff up but the animals were what made life civilized. The only patch of grass in the whole camp was dedicated to them. I later learned that the species were in danger of going extinct. I often wonder what happened to them after the camp closed some years ago
