As a Baltimore native, I loved the Terps. I was 15 years old and was supposed to be in bed at 9pm. It was Feb. 20, 1986 and my Len Bias led Terps were playing the despised and overrated UNC Tarheels. The problem was that the game started at 8pm and I would miss the second half because I had to go to bed. I hid my small transistor radio in the bed with me and listened to the game quietly. My palms were sweaty, not from fear of getting caught, but because Len Bias was putting on the show of a lifetime and I was "there"! Lenny had a very high basketball IQ, he was a physical freak of nature, he could jump out of the gym, he had a silky smooth touch with accuracy from as far as 18 ft. out, and he was coachable. All of these assets, combined with his killer instinct on the court would have help Boston win at least 2 more rings in the Bird era. As it turns out, we will never know. Well, we might one day.
I was a student at MD. they'd given out life sized bias posters at the previous game. so we hung ours in our apt and lit candles under him during the NC game like he was a saint. he was a man among boys even in the loaded ACC. it was a joke that walter berry won player of the year in '86, but that's what playing in NY gets u. while jordan's game was already polished to an extent his freshman year, lenny was super raw his freshman year but his game just took off his jr and sr years. I'd argue lenny was still a bit raw his senior year! wasn't great on the dribble, couldn't create his shot from the outside he still had a ton of upside and playing with legends like parrish, mchale, johnson and of course bird wouldve pushed him to legendary heights.
He was bigger stronger, just as fast, jumped just as high, could block, rebound, ast, and steal the ball. Had defense and offense. The guy's game was just about flawless
Sometimes fate and life deals a crushing blow and the Len Bias story is one. My moto is " Don't believe everything you hear and only half of what you see ".
Don’t know if would have been better than MJ but it would have been scary seeing him and Bird play together possibly could have pulled in another ring or two .
His game was more developed and more polished than Jordan’s at this stage. And a much better jump shooter! Jordan jumper was shaky up until the 88/89 seasons.
Jordan's early years he played Westbrook ball more PG type play at the SG driving most plays. Bias played both forward positions but looked more like a SG.
All I know I remember the game they played against each other in college, they both had good games but in the clutch MJ did what he does??’ Both were great college players!!!! Li lived in NC and MD during that time?
With Larry Bird, Kevin Mchale, Reggie Lewis, and Robert Parish as his supporting cast as a rookie. Dawg, that would've been like if Jordan got drafted to the Lakers with Magic, Kareem, and Worthy. Jordan would've got 15 rings. Safe estimate, Bias would've gotten maybe 6-7, Jordan never retire on the Bulls, he would've gotten 8-10.
No he wasn't. If you pay attention to the game when they played against each other it's clear jordan is better. Len needed his team mate's help to contain jordan that worked for about 14 minutes.
You got to remember that Jordan had several years in Len and that makes a big difference at that level, and actually Jordan had a much better team.and coach. Bias shot had a perfect form, unblockable and he was almost a 90 % shooter in his senior year.He was bigger and much stronger and had a bigger vertical leap,by 4 inches i believe. Also a tremendous court sense, great at anticipating, very high basketball iq and an underated passer. Jordan s only edge was at ball handling but he was smaller and as a guard his primary role was to bring up the ball. So on balance I feel Bias has potential to be better
For those that have never seen Len Bias play…then they’ll never know, nor will they understand that he indeed was better than MJ! Ask John Salley, Horace Grant or Olden Polynice who all competed against Bias and Jordan in the old ACC. Bias was a problem!
I'm 47 years old and a life long Michigan State fan and even though we had a good team (which is usually the case in basketball) my favorite player was Len Bias . I'm not going to say he was better than Jordan but what I will tell you is that he'd definitely be a HOFer. Take the power game of Shawn Kemp, mix in a 46" vertical (per NBA combine) and a jumper that Jordan would've killed for it's in the bag. The highlights don't show you how unstoppable he was. And those Maryland teams minus Lenny were terrible. Take him off that team and they wouldn't have won much . Truth is, he was under utilized. You just couldn't stop him from getting his jumper off whenever he wanted to and it was PURE. Best jump shot form I have ever seen. Top that off with the fact that you couldn't block it. Damn I wanted to see him in the league, now all we got is highlights that could never adequately explain how good he really was. Horace Grant was asked by Tracy McGrady who was the best he ever seen. Wonder what he said.....
So tough to find a player that can consistently knock down that baseline jumper from the low block over a defender, or wide open from 10-12 feet out. Plus you have the athleticism above the rim. Certainly that would have translated really well in the NBA. But it's hard to project 18, 19, 20 year old kids. Jordan was rated high but I don't think anyone, save Bobby Knight, realized just HOW good Mike was coming out of college. The draft is still a bit of a crapshoot.

The problem with Len Bias is he had a drug problem. He was a good ball player, but he lacked the discipline to grow into his full potential the way Michael Jordan did. Both Jordan and Bias were evenly matched in college but that is where the similarities between them would have ended. Jordan avoided the distractions of women and drugs and focused on what mattered. He got drafted in 86 though. Bias definitely would've won 86-87, 87-88, and 88-89. Now after Larry and Walton retried it would be a different story once we get in the mid 90s.
@@kantovagrant3194 BOS had no chance against the Lakers in 87’. One of the greatest teams ever. Could they stand a better chance with a youthful Bias? Sure. That’s all tho.
After that they likely face the Pistons in 90’ and win. Now, the only ? is can the 90’ Celts plus Bias beat POR…
94-95’ are tough titles but now we’re asking him to beat Hakeem twice or at least once. Was Bias better than Hakeem in College?
No. Even with Lewis Rip, it’d still be a tall task.
Now 99’ Bias would be in his mid 30’s at his peak or barely falling out of it.
Probably a 25 & 8 guy with heady defense in the post.
That’s the most LIKELY title.
Even then, he has to stop that energetic and starving NYK team
@@kantovagrant3194 I doubt SA beat NYK with Ewing healthy so I’d give 99’ to Bias.
After that he makes it out the East twice and loses to LA.
What a tragedy
Len Bias would’ve been great no doubt, but nt better than Jordan. Stop it!!!
he couldve been equal maybe. he was big and could score. but jordan's just on a level of his own. len wouldve been ssecond place in the nba league. jordan is in jordan league tho, even when they did face off
@@enuff943 If Bias were alive and still competed with Jordan...its only would lead to situation in which Jordan became better than he was ever without Bias, Jordan need equal opponent to grow higher and higher, coz Jordan was mind and he will use it in best possible way to develop, and Bias had no mind, he has no control, so maybe...maybe, he was athlete better than Jordan in that moment, but still Jordan was better sportsman with more mature mind and with clearer goal.
Are u serious...Len Bias was than Mike at that stage...AND MIKE KNEW IT
@@curtisellis6703 HE WAS NOT and never was

stop the comparison no one is better then michael except maybe dr j, wilt or shaq and thats about it.
Shaq???
There is no comparison, len bias was better then EVERYBODY you just named . The only reason ppl try to act like he wasn't was because of how he died .Michael Jordan knows in his heart he only became the best because len bias died so he became the best by default.
He was the greatest , R.I.P.
Not
Stupid, click-bait title. Permanent ignore list.
Great college player no doubt... but not better in the ACC than David Thompson or Michael Jordan.
Better then the both of them at the college level
@@garymayfield5995 delusional
Who the duck is David Thompson? LB was a pforward with a sguard jumper.......him going to a championship contender and Jordan going to average bulls we'd all be wearing Nike air bias.... come to think of it what shoe was Len Bias contracted to?
@@rodneydiggs3926 turned the average Bulls into champions and the team to watch in the 90s. Was a instant sensation in his rookie season. Haha i/diot
@@rodneydiggs3926 David Thompson the College Basketball Hall Of Fame and Basketball Hall Of fame player. I/diot
Well, he wasn't smarter 🤔
Yep, that's the only thing about Lenny that Jordan eclipsed him on. He was surrounded by the wrong people that wanted to fuck him over. Brian Tribble should rot in hell.
Of course Lenny was better than Jordan! No question!!!
He would've been Jordan's equal. They definitely would've had some scraps between the Bulls and Celtics.
And took his own life by doing cocaine by own choice
