We're visiting the Dutch city of Gouda in this practical guide to seeing the highlights of Gouda, in Holland, in the Netherlands. Most famous for Gouda cheese, but there are many other attractions to enjoy in this beautiful Dutch city. It has some fine examples of that special Dutch feature of the reflecting canals lined by flowers and pedestrian lanes. But here we've got several of these charming neighborhoods we'll show you in the video, and the important building where the cheese was weighed on the main town square.
The Weighing House, or Waag, has for centuries been a central point in town where the all-important cheese was weighed and deals were made.
It now contains the Tourist Information Center and the Cheese and Crafts Museum where you can taste and purchase a variety of cheeses.
The Markt, or marketplace, is the central plaza in the heart of town, home to countless pubs, restaurants and cozy sidewalk cafes.
The exquisitely proportioned Stadhuys, or City Hall, is a gem of late Gothic and early Renaissance architecture, dating from 1449-59.
The traditional cheese market takes place in the plaza every Thursday mornings 10 AM till 1230 from April through the end of August.
The street alongside the marketplace is one of the busiest in town with lots of shops, and especially the restaurants and bars and cafés - usually buzzing with people.
One block away, Groote Kerk, or Great Church, also called Saint John Church, was founded in 1485 and rebuilt after a fire in 1562. The round-arched arcades are borne by 36 pillars supporting the lofty barrel-vaulted ceiling of dark wood. It is the longest church in the Netherlands, at 123 meters.
Our walking route, starting at the train station and down to that central market square, into the church, then we'll continue along a beautiful canal down to the harbor, and then circling back around in a complete round trip walking tour of the city, and ending up back at the train station. Now we continue along the Westhaven canal.
You can easily walk along this splendid canal from the town center, only 600 meters distance - it'll take you about five minutes - down to the historic harbor where you will find clippers, barges and sailing vessels lying majestically alongside each other in the Museum Harbor, and most of these are still lived in.
In the Middle Ages, due to its central location, the town offered passage to ships en-route to Amsterdam and Flanders. After the 15th century, Gouda's role in international shipping went into decline.
Walking back towards the center from the harbor, you'll see another historic site - it's a windmill, very characteristic of the Netherlands.
We're taking a circular route through town, walking along yet another beautiful canal, observing all these bicycles going back and forth. You can actually rent a bicycle here if you'd like to peddle around in town or even extend out to some of the surrounding areas.
This route to the harbor, and then returning along a few of the less traveled back lanes, gets you off the beaten track. It's an easy stroll that doesn't take much time, and this route can bring you past another few blocks of shopping. Here you can see a benefit of being here when the cheese market is not on - you will not see very many other tourists. Then passing along a few residential blocks with their old-fashioned buildings. It's nice to get away from the historic highlights for a while and into a neighborhood that's more for locals. It's quiet and peaceful over here.
Then you will come around the bend and find what is perhaps the prettiest of the canal scenes in town along what's called the Turfmarkt.
Turf was that peat, or combustible decaying soil that was very important to the old Dutch for cooking and heating their homes, much like in Ireland and elsewhere in the north of Europe.
This route takes us back to the center at the marketplace.
There's a lovely block behind the market square. We can have a peek at it showing that very special Dutch combination of shop fronts along a pedestrian lane next to a charming little canal - circles on the map and next to it is the new market, a modern little shopping mall.
Gouda is generally visited as a daytrip from other nearby cities, which are only 20 to 30 minutes away by train. Even all the way to Amsterdam is just 52 minutes. So you can easily visit Gouda for most of the day without spending the night there. Or if you wish to overnight, there are some fine hotels such as a four-star Best Western.

You really missed some spots here which make me mad actually. Let's begin...
The city hall next to the station and the cinema also next to the station are buildings shaped in what Gouda is famous for. Cheese and Sirup waffles. You didn't mention waffles at al.
Oke, it's maybe not a really tourist attraction, but next to the Museumharbour we have the next thing that is "Gouda". Cigars, candles and so on. Made by the factory there. Also it's a nice place to walk a bit back and see the sun going down, gives a nice view over the calm waters. Way more enjoyable then seeying some boats from ancient times.
Then, you have the Goudse Schouwburg. And you missed the Korte/Lange tiendweg, also quite a nice shopping street to go on, lot's of shops there. Or what about after the church you have some small very cozy restaurants and cafe's.
We have a Museum to, called "Museum Gouda". Lot's of cuture there in such a small building. Not to forget we also have a special place for the veterans of the 40's
Then you forget the Houtmansplantsoen, which is a place with a pagode, where music performances are played in summer.
Would also love to mention the Goudse Hout, where now a place for kids is, very fun place, but mainly it's a big city park, that also directs you to the Steinse Groen. Nice places, and freakingly quiet.
Gouda also has "Kaarsjesavond", totally no mention about that, which is quite sad, because it's the biggest event of the year. (A tree is lightened).
Then the fact our city lies in the middle of everything, yes you mentioned it a bit. But basically you can reach the whole country from our station without needing to get a next train. Even from the smaller Goverwelle station. That for a city of just 70K. it's quite recognisable.
And oh yeah, there is GoudAsfalt, which is now a huge event location and a city beach.
Uhm you did mention the Best Western hotel, but forgot de Goudse Lichtfabriek, which is a restaurant in a old lights manufacturing building which huge glass.
OIther churches, also no mention.
For god sake, I almost wanna make a new video myself. If I only could film as well...
Thank you for that detailed description of your town. I will use that as my guide next time I go there. You are correct that my coverage is not complete, but that's all I got during my brief visit, and I felt it was enough to at least present a feeling for the place, and how the main parts of town look and fit together. I will go back and shoot some more, including your suggestions.

Yes, thank you, I will soon be covering Amsterdam in-depth. I was there for a week and got lots of excellent footage. I have begun my series with the other towns of Netherlands,, often overlooked, but will get to Amsterdam soon. About the maps, I am working on a way to create guidebooks that will include them, keep posted.

I go there this coming April it is my home town our family left in 1969. Curious what it looks like now. Google earth is a hard act to follow in regards to maps. Amsterdam is easy see it as a dart-board. Cut it into half. The bulls eye is central station, the triple ring is the metro which connects with all the tramways who are heading also to the central station. It is possible to reach any point in the city by public transport. For a reasonably fit person all of the city can be explored by walking alone.

There is no particular season, but as usual, shoulder season is good. Cheese market is on Thursdays, 10am-12:30pm, April-September.

Then why does Wikipedia say this: "The Sint-Janskerk or Grote Kerk in the Dutch city of Gouda is a large Gothic -style cruciform church...St. John's Church is dedicated to Johannes de Baptist , the patron saint of Gouda

This is right. The sint jans church is a whole different church... Maybe even another sort of Christian church. Like you have a lot of different Christian and church es like catholic (katholiek?) and reformed made free (gereformeerd vrijgemaakt) im a Christian and know a lot of Gouda, because I live there for 18 years. Still live in the netherlands, my parents still live there. If u have question you can ask. Sint Jan is reformed (hervormd) I thought, and grote kerk is different i thought like catholic i thought.
@@StefferXXL i think your correct i live in gouda my whole life (19 years) and sint jan is reformend for sure and not sure about grote kerk but i am not sure if its even still in use as a chursh cause ther was a iceskating course in like 2 or 3 years ago
@@echo_of_ghosts2410 there were a lot by the stadhuis... But i think the church, the big one 123 m high is more for activities than church things. But a lot of People still go on sunday to the sint Jan to have church cuz i know some of them
