He was romanticised in Alexandre Dumas' books under the name D'Artagnan, a name he also used himself. He died during the siege of Maastricht

Two of the oldest churches are to be found here and are more then 1000 years old. The city is 2000 years old, the second oldest city in the Netherlands. Its original name is TRAIECTVM AD MOSA or MOSA TRAIECTVM.
Maastricht is a beautiful city, so is Amsterdam. Both can't be compared to each other, it's very different. Despite that Amsterdam is my hometown, there are many places in Amsterdam, which are very nice and you can enjoy the atmosphere. Whenever I go to Maastricht, it certainly is beautiful, but it feels more as a different place in Europe, rather being a typical Dutch city, it is a special city.
Yes it’s all personal preference. But I think we can surely say that Amsterdam has become overrun but tourists the last few years. It’s a shame people only go there and skip out on the rest of the Netherlands!
Italian born in Liège (Belgium), near Maastricht. The comparison between these two cities is simply impossible as Liège is light years behind Maastricht and for so long.😂
@@KokoroKompass 1600 is actually late in the Renaissance period, considering that Leonardo da Vinci died in 1519 and he was the major figure of that period. The Middle Ages finished in the 1300s at the start of the Renaissance.
Maastricht is a beautiful city, but not the only city that is beautiful. Amsterdam is also a very beautiful city, just like so many other cities such as Alkmaar, Delft, Gouda, Amersfoort, Zutphen, Deventer, Haarlem, Den Bosch, The Hague etc. Each city has its own beauty and one appeals to you more than the other. It’s a matter of taste which city you like the most.
@@KokoroKompass A large part of the tourists who visit Amsterdam don't walk through a city like you do. They go to Amsterdam to visit the coffee shops and to get drunk and to visit the red light district. They also haven’t an eye for the beautiful houses and museums. The vast majority of tourists who visit the other cities like you , go for the beauty of the city. And if you do a Europe tour, you really don't have the time to go to Maastricht for a while. But having said that, have you ever been to Belgium. speaking of beautiful cities....
@@KokoroKompass Yes I understand. I lived in Amsterdam for more than 12 years, but the increasing drug tourism has not done the city any good.I lived in Old South where it was still fairly quiet. The current mayor, Halsema, is trying to reduce this excess burden. The city itself remains very beautiful and is still in my heart. I also had family living in Maastricht and I used to visit regularly as a child. As far as Belgium is concerned: Bruges ( Brugge) and the city center of Mechelen are also really beautiful, I have been there last year and Ghent ( Gent) is also very nice
Yes although you cannot compare Maastricht with Amsterdam for example. Maastricht feels more like a village, in a good way. Much more to explore around the city as well, and indeed 5 minutes from Belgium and a bus goes directly to Aachen (Germany) You will not regret the choice of city at least😊
It's simple, stop acting like an American rushing through the place like a coffee addicted hyperactive person with ADHD and go to a terrace or café to drink or eat something and do it there. The enjoyable thing in our burgundic culture is walking around while enjoying a few breaks with good drinks & food. Around the noon you'll have lunch anyways so that's one moment, before that you can enjoy a coffee with a piece of pastry or a cocktail/beer/wine on a summer day, in the afternoon you can have something sweet accompanied with a coffee or some tapas or snacks if you prefer savoury and then its evening and you'll go out to eat again and enjoy the art of eating two to three courses slowly while talking to eachother, which gives you 1-2 hours to dump your load in their toilet. That's like 3-4 potty breaks from the late morning till the evening, most people should be fine with this.
