Salton Sea - Miracle in the Desert - 1969 vs 2022 - Revisited

  • An update with much better (less wobble) footage and more footage comparing the Miracle in the Desert 1969 film to the Salon Sea today in 2022.
    As a reminder - people still live there - this isn't meant to make light of the sea and it's condition - but more to call out the deterioration over time to a place once considered a vacation destination.

    I really liked how you combined the sappy promotional footage from 1969 with the images from today. Well done!
    I've enjoyed staying at Covina Beach, and I hope for the sake of the birds and fish that it doesn't go away. Thanks

    The north shore area of the Salton sea was a big part of my childhood in the 70s. It’s sad what it has become.

    As a teenager living in Southern California in the late '60s, I can remember the early expectations of the Salton Sea area and have to say these videos are rather depressing to see...although now that I'm retired I do intend to spend some time camping around the area to reminisce about the past as I sip my tequila and smoke my joint.

    • @HoyaSaxaSD
      @HoyaSaxaSD ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There was a time, even long after its demise, where you probably could enjoy a joint with some eccentric artists and nomads up at Slab City and thereabouts. But now? No reason to go near Slab City, as it seems to be people really up to no good, including criminals, meth addicts, and assorted nutcases and ne’er-do-wells.
      Salton Sea itself is quite smelly because it’s filled with dead/rotting fish, and the “beach” is extremely uncomfortable because there is no longer much sand, but instead the entire beach is crushed fish bones (from the millions of fish skeletons that became brittle and crushed). Wear Crocs or something, because the beach will seriously cut up your feet like walking in glass (and probably infect it). Fun times.
      At least Salvation Mountain is still there. But who knows how long it will stay cool now that it’s creator and caretaker passed away.

    I like the contrast of the film from the 60's and the one you made in 2022. I didn't know about this place , then my son went to Palm Springs and drove to Salton to explore and sent me a photograph, that led me to youtube where I found your well done video. I read this lake was created by mistake in 1905 by diverting the Colorolado river. An ecological disaster.

    It was imagined to be a future valuable group of communities, but it didn’t turn out that way. However, there is value in the beauty of the sea itself and the wildlife. California politicians need to put some funds into delivering more water to the sea to preserve the haven for wildlife.

    Lithium has brought new investment. Musk and Buffett are looking at a lithium rebirth for the area. At 230 feet below sea level , some are looking at a canal from Mexico, or the Pacific to refill this toxic impoundment. The Sallton sea basin is on the 10 most likely deposits for lithium mining.

    Wow it’s even worse than when I saw it 9 yrs ago. It smells just like it looks too. Just really sad. Some of the art work is really good but why do humans have to ruin buildings and pools with drawings and words? Why leave your trash all over and break things that aren’t yours. Just trashed and that is due to disrespectful human beings. Is it so hard to pickup your own trash and leave things alone?
    What is it the drugs that come from Thermal or the low life’s that don’t want to work so they are bored.
    It’s really hard to see how trashed it is and those that live there in a newer subdivision how no power to stop them.
    Great video but also very disturbing.
