I have been knitting and crocheting for 30+ years but never done this stitch. Thank you for your video. I do have question do you happen to have stitch count for smaller heads? 😁
I followed everything to the T; - worsted yarn - number of stitches required based on head circumference - size of needles - the stitches to knit And yet, there is NO WAY this beanie is going over my head, it’s waaay too small. Oh well, I’ll find a child to donate it to and knit another one with a totally different sizing. [EDIT] - I’ve now completed the entire beanie, and not just a portion of it. Guess what? It fits!!! It’s a tiny bit tighter than I expected, however I think if I wet the beanie it’ll expand out the perfect amount. Thanks again Davina, your videos are excellent!
I’m so thankful for your patience while teaching these beginner’s tricks on knitting. I’d like to consider myself as a seasoned crocheter but have been wanting to learn to knit again. I’ve watched many beginner tutorials but have always felt nervous the way other advanced knitters teach. They have made me especially nervous doing the purl stitch and can’t figure, for the life of me, how to hold my yarn so I can knitting stitches smoother - without me getting tangled on working yarn strands. Lol you’re so patient, your voice comes off as always encouraging to “go on… you can do it…” you keep reminding us, beginners, that it can be a disaster in the beginning & that’s totally fine, not to expect perfection coz we as beginners are just starting out “”a new language” with our hands. Thank you. I wanted to share that while watching your folder for beginners, I have finally liked doing purl stitches. AND I have finally found a comfortable way to hold my yarn. I’m a right-handed crocheter, so I hold my yarn on the left hand. I started doing that, thinking it might walk for me since I do the same while crocheting. Nope, it didn’t! I think it’s called continental knitting (left hand yarn hold). So I copied how the yarn is oriented on your hand. That worked so much better! Now I can do the purl and knit stitch more conveniently withou turning my fingers into a pretzel. Lol again, thank you ❤
After almost 2 years of having stumbled across your channel and it giving me the motivation to pick up the needles and finally learn how to knit, I can finally say that I've finally knit this beanie (I literally just finished it a moment ago and I am so happy!). This tutorial right here was the one that started everything and I cannot fully express with words just how great this journey has been and how thankful I am to you for being the inspiration for it. You are a wonderful teacher and I love your videos, truly thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me that little push to start this wonderful hobby ❤
Hi, You are my "coup de coeur"! You are the best knitting teacher!! Really, I'm more of a crocheter but always had a kick for the look of knitting projects. This year I took the decision to try knitting in the round. After watching zillions of TH-cam videos, you won! Didn't have the right size of needles (mine are 5mm) but decided to give it a try...what is life if you don't live dangerously! I appreciate all the tips and tricks you give! You're my bYTf!
I agree with so many here. Your videos are easy and fun to follow, encouraging one to jump right in and start. Which I did. So many times I tried to learn the Italian cast on. Thanks to you...done. Looking forward to learning much more through you. 😊
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I needed something new to knit during quarantine, after finishing my slytherin scarf (also with one of your patterns), and this was perfect. By the way, I used dpns for the whole thing because I didn't have a circular needle small enough and it worked perfectly, so as long as you have long enough dpns you'll be fine.
I just finished the pattern. Thank you for the tutorial, it was my first time knitting a hat and the result is just awesome. Since I didn't have DPNs I used the magic loop technique to finish the hat. It's a great and easy alternative if you already have a long (the longer the better) and flexible circular needle on hand. Mine was 36in (91.5 cm) long.
I haven't done any knitting projects yet, this is my first time. I'm happy of what my work has become. Even a beginner can do this if you're the one teaching the process! Thank you for sharing this to us!
No matter how long I've been knitting I always learn something new from you. Your tutorials are precise and fun to watch. I'm going through my stash of yarn right now to start this hat. My BFF has been asking me to make her a hat that is not a "brain crusher" and this is it! Thank you so much....Please continue with the tutorials. They are GREAT!!!!
I enjoyed this tutorial so much. Have you considered doing a brioche hat tutorial. I’m ready to try and feel your teaching style would give me confidence!
I was able to knit my first hat thanks to this tutorial! I had never attempted to knit a hat before because I was scared of knitting in the round and using DPNs, but this video helped me step by step and made everything feel so easy. Thank you so much, Davina!
I made this hat in the small size and it came out great! It is however a bit too big around the rib. I noticed a difference of 4 stitches between the small and large size. Does this mean if I want to make it smaller I can cast on 80 stitches for example? How does this affect the increase round? Thank you for your help. You did a beautiful job explaining how to make this hat from start to finish.
I really enjoy watching your videos and tutorials. The lighting is good, you're super fun and your instructions are clear, detailed and very helpful! You are amazing - thank you so much for sharing here on YT!! x Davie
thanks for the amazing cast-on tutorial! I've made the slough beanie a few years ago and still refer to your cast-on portion of the video to remind myself how-to.
Thank you so very very much for your video!! You explain everything clearly and perfectly. I crochet everyday, but I love the texture that knitting produces. I've almost finished a knitted scarf for my daughter, a very plain scarf, but I'm going try this hat and hopefully grow in knitting confidence. Again, many thanks from Perth, Western Australia 🇦🇺 💐💐
I love this hat and just finished it in 3 days! Even though I checked my gauge and used size 5 and size 3 needles as my guage showed, it was still way too big. I followed the size small and my head circumference is 21.5 inches. It must be the yarn I used that caused it to be too large. I am going to remake it with the same yarn. Will these adjustments work? CO 72 sts, Increase round: *K3, M1, K3, M1* to 96 sts. Decrease as done in the pattern.
I am absolutely ecstatic about my hat I just finished! Your tutorial is excellent. The pattern is gorgeous. I’m new to knitting, and this twisted rib stitch is my favorite now. I’m going to make these as presents. Very fun project, and really relaxing. I had to modify, because I didn’t have size 4, and 4.5 16” circulars on hand. I only had a 5 16” circular. So I just stuck with that for the entire pattern, and my hat came out beautiful. I will be buying the interchangeable circulars soon, and would love to see this with the 4 and 4.5. Just wanted to let you know, that it still looks beautiful with the 5. Thank you for the tutorial 🥰
YAY! I'm so happy for you! That's so awesome that your hat turned out the way you wanted. About the needle size, gauge is unique to each knitter, so it's totally possible for you to get a hat that fits you with a different needle size. (If you're interested in a deep dive on knitting gauge, I made a video all about it here 🤓: th-cam.com/video/M-lvbzhq3fo/w-d-xo.html ) Anyway, glad the hat worked out well for you! Whoever gets them as presents, is very lucky!
I just finished this and love it, thankyou it's my first time knitting anything. Would it be possible to swap out the textured rib for a stockinette stitch do you think?
this is a good video , thank you for the step by step, on how and what to do next, some other videos dont do these steps, i will keep watching yor videos due to the way you walk us through on what to do next. thank you so much
Hello, I was researching how to decrease for hat crowns. Thanks for that! I like the texture of this stitch pattern because usually fisherman rib or brioche seems too thick for me .
I am making this right now. I am making a size large. My question is about the size of the cast on and 2x2 is still a little tight. If I make this again, how do I make it just a little bit larger. My son in law has a large head
You have been my quarantine knitting teacher. Practicing every day. At the end of my increase row I have 3 extra stitches (I admit I am terrible at keeping count sometimes.) Should I rip it back, or do another knit round and decrease?
Do you have a video for a slouchie in a number 3 light weight? My sister can only learn watching a video and can’t understand calculating from a worsted to dk weight yarn.
Hey! I made the slouchy hat and it came out perfectly but it unraveled within a few hours and I don't know what happened! I was hopeful you had some tips for me so I can try to make it again but avoid this problem. Thank you.
This is a beautiful hat. Super easy pattern. It’s flattering on anyone. My go to pattern. I want to try this using DPN’s... I’m a beginner, but I love using DPN’s. Most peeps do t like them, but once you get used to them they are a breeze. Trying to work up a magic loop has been hard for me, Lol. It’s hard finding 16 inch circulars, and interchangeable are pricey. So gonna try to make these using myDouble Points 😉
I feel this might get abandoned, as the video has been around for awhile....but here I am! I knitted up the swatch for gauge - the stitch is beautiful!! I did 22 st for 32 rows on 4.5 mm needles, but it came out as 5" long and 5.5" wide, rather than 4. I'm not sure what to do about this - do I need to change needles? Change yarn? Keep going? Make some modification along the way?? I'm perplexed!! I believe the bigger gauge will look yield more slouch in the slouchy part of the pattern....but I can't be sure. If you are here stitching sheep (I can't recall and can't see without losing my whole comment), please advise!! Tomorrow is knitting day though, and so I might just do it up and see what happens!! 💖
Hi it sounds like your yarn may be a bit thicker. You can try switching to a smaller pair of needles. Here’s a video on gauge that goes through how to troubleshoot: th-cam.com/video/M-lvbzhq3fo/w-d-xo.html
In order to decrease down with any simple basic pattern how do you determine how many stitches to decrease and to knit ? I’m working on a simple hat and I’m about to decrease but not sure how many stitches to decrease? I have 104 stitches . Thank you your hat is beautiful.
Thank you for your fabulous and easy to follow patterns. You’ve got me through lockdown! However.. I need some help. I’ve just realised rather than textured rib, I didn’t do the knit stitch 2nd round and just did the rib round all the way. I need to decrease and wondered if you could tell me how to do this if it’s possible to finish this hat? Can I just knit or can I decrease another way? I’m praying I can so I don’t have to start again 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
So I did not follow your very practical advice of using stitch markers while doing the increase round and also chose to do it while trying to monitor an insane toddler 🤦🏻♀️ and I definitely have the wrong amount of stitches left at the end of the row (I think I have 10?!), any tips on how to fix this? 😭
My partners head measure 23.5 inch circmumbrance and 9 inches from top of crown to base of ear, so unsure which measurements, also he dosnt want a massive long slouch just a little one, can you advise
I would love if you could make a video of how to resize a pattern...for example this one...imagine I want to use bigger needles...how can i make the calculations? because not every patter have a gauge...thanks a lot!!!
Don’t you have videos on knitting a woman cardigan? Plz share link if you have a tutorial on YT or knitting instructions on your website. I checked all your videos but couldn’t find any. Could not find link to your website. Plz help! Thanks!
I’ve downloaded your paid pattern and following along 😊 I absolutely love your tutorials, you make it so much fun! I didn’t like the feel of circular needles at the start but am loving them now. Hopefully I’ll feel the same when I get to the dpns part 🤣🤣🤣🤪💜
You have such a way of making a project look so appealing! I've ordered my yarn and am looking forward to making this. Great tutorial, as usual! Your videos are fantastic. Can you put this pattern up on Ravelry so we can create project pages?
Help! I’m using a super wash wool and have encountered that dreaded knot in my skein. I’ve always used felted wool techniques in the past (think spit/splice), but don’t believe those work with super wash. Does anyone have any suggestions: the best method to continue knitting? Do I knot? Cut, rejoin with weave ins to do? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hi there, thanks for your purchase! The pattern will be sent to your email to download. If you haven’t received it, please email davina[at]sheepandstitch[dot]com
I made a mistake in one of the increase sections and only have 8. I cant go back that far. Can I just do an additional M1 at the very end of the round?
You're a great teacher. After I put the stitches on the larger needed with the K3M1K4M1 pattern and I ended with the 7 stitches at the end, I'm left with 106 stitches on my needles and not the 108 stitch count. What should I do??
You are such an awesome teacher! I'm a total newbie and after watching your beginner videos, I have knitted two scarves and a beanie on circular needles! I've started testing the magic loop method, just wondering, rather than transfering to straight needle, can i keep knitting till the end using magic loop methods?
I am stuck or stupid! Almost finished. On round 12 after decreasing, just knitted it instead of, K1 to back P1. Now to rejoin tutorial at round 16 but unsure what I'm knitting on odd rounds 13 & 15? 😳Before round 12 they were the decrease rounds. Please clarify, help!!! 😭🤣😭
Love the tutorial! Got my brim done last night, going to start the increase. My only issue is that I feel like my needles seem so much smaller than the video. I have the same size as pattern indicates and I think the gauge is right, so I shouldn’t worry, but they seem so much smaller lol
A slouchy go-everywhere beanie is a great staple for your wardrobe. Learn how to knit one up in this step-by-step tutorial!

Just finished! Seems to fit
You are a wonderful instructor. Just subscribed🤗
You have such a way of making a project look so appealing! I've ordered my yarn and am looking forward to making this. Great tutorial, as usual! Your videos are fantastic.
Can you put this pattern up on Ravelry so we can create project pages?
What would the stitches be for a kids size
A Russian join could work: th-cam.com/video/NHx9AyRnM4A/w-d-xo.html
love your video, just purchased the pattern but cannot find where to download.
How many stitches if I need the hand to fit 24” head?
could i do the dpn part in magic loop instead???
I am stuck or stupid! Almost finished. On round 12 after decreasing, just knitted it instead of, K1 to back P1. Now to rejoin tutorial at round 16 but unsure what I'm knitting on odd rounds 13 & 15? 😳Before round 12 they were the decrease rounds. Please clarify, help!!! 😭🤣😭
Can i make it longer than what its call for ?
Love the tutorial! Got my brim done last night, going to start the increase. My only issue is that I feel like my needles seem so much smaller than the video. I have the same size as pattern indicates and I think the gauge is right, so I shouldn’t worry, but they seem so much smaller lol
If I don’t have a smaller needle, could TWISTED rib work for the rim?
Sure!
Hi really enjoy your video. just wondering if you have a knit flat version of this hat. Thank you
No sorry there’s only this version knit in the round
Thanks!
Thank you!
Awesome video! Cute slouchy hat. Need to make a few hehe. Thanks
Thank you! Yup, you can definitely knit up a couple of these hats before the holidays. They make excellent gifts!
