I have been there myself. Something happens during the Marathon when you are totally spent. Your mind plays tricks on you with irrational negativity. I recall missing a mile pace and getting a surge of negativity. In my mind I assumed my goal was way out the window immediately. My mind was telling me the math just does not add up anymore so why push it? Just jog it in. In hindsight, the math did add up and I just needed to keep pushing through. It's almost like your mind is looking for any reason to quit and then it delivers it to you with bad math. 😀

Bravo, Mike! Congratulations on a hard-fought race! You are LA tempered, strong and ready for the cooling waters of Lake Superior!🌊💜I’ve done Grandma’s Marathon several times-it is a sweet course with Lake Superior on your left all the way home (and a gentle, barely rolling course with net downhill). At the end you can cool down in the Lake. They also have the Gerry Bjorkland Half which I did last year (it starts well before the marathon so we can cheer you across the finish in Canal Park). We stay at a hotel on the finish line-so convenient and easy. I saw Kellyn Taylor break the women’s course record a year I was side-lined but still went up to Duluth. Great race weekend atmosphere. Hope you will do it. I am positive you can get your sub 3 there. But the half is also waiting for you. Thank you for the inspiring video, as always. Beautiful work.
