Toshogu Shrine in the city of Nikko of Tochigi Prefecture is about two hours from Tokyo via Tobu Railway.
You can take the Tobu Line from Asakusa station or SkyTree station in Tokyo. The express train runs several times a day between Tokyo and Nikko, making the travel to Nikko an easy and affordable day-trip. However, there are so many things to see in the vicinity of Nikko so it’s worth staying there for a couple days.
The Watarase Canyon is located just south of Nikko and accessible via Watarase Canyon Railway (Watarase Keikoku Tetsudo) or Route 122 by car, both of which run alongside the breathtaking canyon.
The Watarase Canyon train stops at tranquil small villages along the canyon, connecting Kiryu station in Gunma Prefecture and Mato station in Nikko, where you can take a local bus to Toshogu Shrine.
