  • We have been growing Rijk Zwaan hybrid vegetable seeds for a few years and have developed a successful relationship with their distributor, Holland Greentech.
I was humbled to be invited to be part of group of African farmers invited to visit the home of Rijk Zwaan and learn more about them during a week filled with learning and sharing.
This video shares a recap of my trip to the Netherlands in June 2024, where we saw some of what goes into breeding and developing their hybrid vegetable seeds, and what makes them so special.
The tour also included several other visits to relevant and interesting places for emerging farmers.

Thank you. We really struggle to cater to visitors at our farms, which are busy working places.
It gives us a challenge in meeting our own deliverables and targets.
So we make these TH-cam videos as our way of sharing our experiences with Zambia and the continent.

VERY INFORMATIVE THANKS. MY ONLY CONCERN WAS THE QUESTION ON GMO SEEDLING ISSUE WAS NOT POSED TO THE DIRECTOR AT THE END AND WHAT HE MEANT BY NEW VARIETIES OF VEGETABLES USING TECHNOLOGY CAN BE DEVELOPED FOR THE FUTURE TO SOLVE FOOD CHALLENGES. IS THAT GMO INDIRECTLY?

There was no need to. As I mentioned in the video, Rijk Zwaan does not produce GMO.
They practice selective breeding to produce varieties with the desired characteristics.
It usually takes about 7-10 years to produce a new variety.
I feel many of us Africans are suspicious of plant breeding, which makes me sad.

Hi there. It happens pretty much the way we described in the video. It has taken us years to build up the relationship to this level.
If you go through the videos again, you will be able to track the process.
      All the best.
