    In the houseplant section of IKEA they sometimes feature larger cork discs, which would be a size similar to your original 'pizza' circle

    Milton Bradley's original Hero Quest came with little card stock tokens that helped to change the layout of the board the game came with so that it could represent different dungeon layouts. For me the Ultimate Dungeon Terrain would be a large circular board with a set of nicely illustrated durable cardstock tokens for walls, pillars, pool, altars, and other assorted dungeon features. 3D terrain is lovely, but in terms of convenience and saving space cardboard tokens are an unbeatable solution. Just pick your miniatures off the board then sweep the tokens into a box and you've packed up for the night.

      Plastic-rubber all the way! Mantic's Terrain Crate are THE best furniture to use with UDT. Super tough, rubber, takes craft paint, doesn't chip. I'm happy to recommend them.

      @@DUNGEONCRAFT1 Anything that would block line of sight is going to end up blocking line of sight of your players too. That's my main problem with 3d terrain.
      Hero Quest did it right by making the objects in the dungeon 3d, but the walls of the dungeon were either printed on the board or were marked out by 2d cardboard tokens.

      @@BanjoSick I GM standing as well. We play 1974 Original D&D, and in recent years we've pretty much abandoned sitting "at" a table, we're playing the whole room. I think UDT is a neat concept, but I'm not sure why you would use it with a fundamentally tactical system like D&D. So much of the combat system cares about things like exact positions and precise ranges. If you throw all that out in favor of abstraction, why not just play a simpler game?

    • @DUNGEONCRAFT1
      @DUNGEONCRAFT1  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because ALL D&D is now ONE D&D. If I ditch ranges, that’s still D&D.

    • @moritzhackl2575
      @moritzhackl2575 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think 5e is necessarily super tactical. I use UDT to illustrate theatre of the mind combat. I don't want to count squares, nor do I have the space to store lots of terrain. At the game table I have 6 players with their stuff as well as a buttload of snacks so UDT fits nicely.
      I tell my players the distances between the locations built on the dungeon disc and the various minis and when it's unclear if something hits I just estimate like I would with full theatre of mind.
      The reason I think UDT works so well is because much like 5e as a whole it's somewhere between tactics and simplicity. You can play 5e all kinds of ways and this way enables me to do abstracted gridless combat while still helping players to be tactical by showing where everything is (and crafting loads of scatter terrain, ideal for "animate objects" shenanigans).

    New DM. I have been enjoying running the game. Thank you fall all your advice. Thought we were going to terrain and miniature it out, but my group has been using theatre of the mind as our go to. Which works well with our speedier approach to what the characters get into.

    I have adapted your UDT concept by drawing the 'tiles'/'stones on a circle of upholstery leather (scraps/offcuts sourced for free from a local upholsterer). I use the soft 'inside' rather than the glossy outside.
    I also use a length of 12 inch wide leather (with grid) as a travel map - One end is start point, other end is destination, grid represents time periods (hours or days).
    If folk want the flexibility of a map/terrain they can roll up and pop in a document tube to transport to their games, I recommend getting on good terms with your local upholsterer :)
    Thanks, Professor DM for the inspiration.

    I like the UDT with two different ranges. Seems a bit cramped with terrain elements on it. I might try to replicate it with slightly bigger cork plates. How is the durability?

    • @DUNGEONCRAFT1
      @DUNGEONCRAFT1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      THAT would be the problem. Cork can warp. I wouldn't go that much larger with that material. And it had to be heat pad cork--it's harder and won't flake.

    I believe Ikea has lazy susan bearing sets to attach under a plywood or wood disk, or a complete lazy susan that could be dressed up... tippity tap, they have a 15inch lazy susan for $18 "Snudda". More expensive than the cork trivet set though. Hardware stores have the lazy susan bearing sets.

    I'd be really interested in seeing how these are actually used in game. Even with the larger piece it seems as though it's just a physical representation of ranges for ToTM combat rather than useful for any tactical usage.
    I have to wonder why the need for the expense and trouble (mind you, I love them) of minis if you're actually just doing ToTM.
