As someone who only played the main game I actually learned a fair bit. I still think Phantasia is one of the few old games that really needs a remake.
You posted this over a year ago , the good news is that it might happen with the new tales of revival the company announced it had several new projects to bring the tales games to modern platforms.
It's not "overlooked" when the majority people can't look; It hasn't been localized outside Japan. Phantasia is still my favorite tales since the 90s, though.
Good point. I was thinking more of how old it is compared to the other titles. I'd imagine most people would rather play whatever's shiny and new like Arise
@@BlueRainbow101 Well when it was released in North America 2006 was EXTREMELY late for the GBA. And speaking of shiny and new...it was 1 month after Legendia and 7 months before Abyss. A lot of us didn't have jobs back then and were at the whims of our parents. What makes it even sadder the GBA version was released 3 years eariler in Japan they knew about the issues the port had and the PSP version was in deveopment in 2006.
@@Chelaximon top of that, the gba port is notoriously dookie, I grew up with it and even as a kid I knew it was the worst way I could’ve experienced it. I to this day still don’t get while Namco is so adamant on localizing the infinitely better ports of Phantasia.
I'm so happy I grew up with the Tales series. Such great examples of epic and complex stories where there is no clear good and bad but rather explores the moral grays of perspectives that could be seen as conflicting on the surface but are actually much closer than initially thought. Obviously Tales isn't the only game to explore this, but Tales has such a way of unironically saying "the true treasure was the friends we made along the way" that will never cease to charm me and always bring me back to these games.
Ultimately, I feel like these games live and die by their casts of characters. The stories themselves are good (though some are kinda... just ok, in my opinion), but the one thing I tend to remember most about any given Tales games, even if I played it many years ago, is the characters. I think skits were a great inclusion to the series and I'm glad that they've been carried forward. They provide digestible interactions between characters and make them that much easier to get attached to. Usually by the time I've beaten one of these games, I've spent... who knows, 60 or 70 hours with them and parting with the cast is a bit of a bittersweet experience. Like you, I'm very glad to have grown up with this series, and I share your feelings on the charm of these games. I would even go as far as to say that playing games like these has actively helped stave off the cynicism that can sometimes come with growing up. People may look at certain themes like friendship, unity, hope, etc... and see them as naive, childish, or corny, but I feel like they are communicated in these games with *such* honesty, that I cannot help but feel good playing them. I think these games just have a lot of "heart." I find it a bit frustrating to talk about, because I feel like it's a rather ambiguous property that I can't fully describe. All that said, I'm looking forward to what the series has in store for us in the future... But I'm also looking forward to replaying some of those old gems in the upcoming remaster ;p
I haven't played any of the other Tales games and only just recently watched a full playthrough of the newest Tales(Arise). I just happened to find Phantasia while looking through a list of SNES RPGS and decided to try it and OH man was I impressed! That game is amazing for the time!
Honest question, so the Thor people died of starvation because they disnt have resources underwater BUT Cress and his party literally get there and raise the city? What? Couldn't the people of Thor have done that?
Phantasia has always been my favorite Tales. So happy I stumbled on it and emulation in the late 90s. It’s sad that Winona was so important in the LN but doesn’t even get a cliffnote in the game. But that’s Nanci’s doing.
I love your complete, unabridged timeline videos!! Especially your symphonia one! I was so excited to see you upload this! Great video im looking forward to the next Tales Of one! ^.^
The character design and art direction of Phantasia is by far my favorite of the series. I don’t like the route they went with later games. I just love the feel and look of Japanese character design in the 80s and 90s
I still think that introducing a convoluted time travel story in the first game of a franchise was really weird and could have ended pretty bad for the future of it but I'm glad it worked out because I would not have had the pleasure of casting "Indignation" on Dhaos in Vesperia.
this is my favorite game of all time. i know the plot is a little messy due to the reason you mentioned in the video but i love the characters and story too much to care. as a diehard fan of phantasia i appreciate the video. you did the story justice and explained it and the related books and games very well. its nice to see someone put some care into a video about this often overlooked landmark JRPG. hopefully someday namco gives it a fair chance, because the GBA and iOS versions weren’t it.
Always love respect to Phantasia. Been a while since I've seen the plot walked through, so I forget how truly grim a lot of it can be despite it being a very comical game plus the chibi sprites of RPGs of the time. But yeah something about its story, out of all Tales titles is the one you can tell feels most like a full fledged novel, for obvious reasons. Definitely up there for favorite stories in the series.
Bro, WHERE is the Phantasia Remake? Id say its an easy fucking sell if they market it as Symphonia's sequel. I mean, just look at FF7R. I know it wont have that budget, but shit this video sold me so hard on a Phantasia Remake of AAA scale.
Maybe with *even more* stuff in it! Ever since I learned that Symphonia was actually Phantasia’s prequel, I’ve wanted a remake of it for that alone. Maybe in a proper remake, they could even find a way to work Rondoline into the story in a more cohesive way, or introduce some retroactive references to Symphonia (and DotNW). Hell, if one of the kingdoms has a library containing a book that mentions Cruxis and the Desians, that by itself would be incredible. Also, I’d like to imagine that people on Aselia must have at least tried to find alternative energy sources, even if they went underutilized once magitechnology was rediscovered and weaponized.
I mean considering the fact that origin is lord of space and time and is an outside observer who can correct any timeline shenanigans i don't actually see many issues with the time travel
Well I’ll be dammned, you completed the Aselia timeline! I always want to play the Phantasia games and especially Narikiri Dungeon. I do have Summoners Lineage which takes place a few centuries later on GBA emulator…though I”m still working on translating that barely. Still impressive to behold.
I love Tales of Phantasia. It was my introduction to the series (snes german patch) and it probably my favorite Snes game of all time! I always thought Dhaos being a morally gray character went a bit underdeveloped in the main game but I guess he gets fleshed out a lot in the Tales of the Worlds games? Its a real shame neither the PS1 nor the PSP remakes of the game have been ever officially localized. I beat the GBA demake but it really doesn't do the game justice
I am so glad i watch the symphonia video 1st, thank you for the suggestion. I am so sad to finish this story and hope you find the time to carry on with the tales series in the future. Thanks for all your hard work.
So pretty much Cless and its companions travel back-and-forth through time. And they changed history in the past, and then someone from the future travel back 50 years in the future. Then eventually they go back to their own time. Which would technically create multiple timelines, which creates other dimensions pretty much the other tales games like tales of Xilla and other tales games and different timelines in theory. Which will make a tales of Multiverse, since they’re a different versions of the tale series. Because Tales of Xilla has some references to the spirits especially Maxwell who is lord of spirits. So they definitely have a connection to tales of Symphonia, and Tales of phantasia and with all the traveling back-and-forth through time. It could’ve created different dimensions by the entire Tales series.
The only "Tales of" that I played until now is Berseria. Love that game. Both the story and it's characters. Pretending on playing Tales of Abyss next.
I was very impressed by this! As a long time fan (And probably the only person who played the GBC Phantaisa: Narikiri Dungeon from start to end) it was so refreshing to see all of our research compiled neatly. Well done, this was so fun. I miss the Tales of Phantasia series..
And Maxwell is actually right, because when Cless and the other is went back-and-forth through time, both in the past and future. It created alternate timelines like the spinoff game you mentioned earlier. And the other Tales games. Which means there are I think four Timelines because I’m not sure because they travel to the past which creates 2 Timelines, then they travel to the future, which also creates 2 Timelines. As an example, the old timeline still exist, and the new timeline also exist, but in a different dimension . Same with the future timeline, where the original timeline still exist, but an alternate timeline exist. I know Tales of Xilla definitely has a connection because of Maxwell and the spirits.
Commenting not just for the algo, but because this was a wonderful trip down memory lane. I played the GBA and later PSX version of Phantasia as a teenager back in to 2000s, long after becoming a Tales fan thanks to Symphonia and while the series hasn't always been as giving in the West, I will be glad to be around to enjoy more. Hope everyone is playing the hell out of Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn expansion.
I love these big hour plus long videos but I also miss more consistent EruptionFang content. No shade, after all, it is your channel. Love your content.
Two things: 1: how you ended the video, your final words, with the song and footage that played.....got me emotional as I never knew the full game of Tales of Phantasia except for the existence of Dhaos himself as a tragic villain that was once a hero at one time....I LOVED this tail, the characters, the story as a whole, yes even IF the time travel aspects aren't fully developed or refined story wise and world building wise much, I still loved it! Which leads me to my second point: I don't care who disagrees with me, I think at this point, with the kind of story, graphics, and gameplay engine of Tales of Zesteria, Besteria, AND Aries, they should TOTALLY do a remake of this game, NOT CHANGING IT like in Final Fantasy 7 remake, and rebirth, but as a faithful telling of the original story but with quality of life features to make it a better version, like Fire Emblem Echoes, Person 3 Reload, and Super Mario RPG for the switch did, while at the same time having true tales of 3d graphics and voice acting too. Id LOVE to see that happen......and in the process have Rondalin have an actual story resolution and development, plus have the Nirikiri dungeon storyline with it, and you have a game with themes and a story that people today would love even more then back in the day.....tales of symphonia is on the switch now, its a petfect time to do this. Truly....
I never played this game, but it amazes me how much Tales of Symphonia explains the context for many many many things that happened in this story. I would love it if this game was re-made like Final Fantasy 7 was. I would play it in a instant lol.

This was great to see, as I love the Tales franchise. I miss the style of the older games, and of them, Takes of the Abyss is by far my favorite. I hope to see that one next, but whatever timeline you do, I will be watching!
Oh this is neat. Phantasia was a huge part of my childhood along with Symphonia and Vesperia. Newer Tales aren't for me but heck it's cool to see people still talk about Tales
damn i finish the whole VId. TOF is my very 1st RPG that I played even its in JPN ver. not understanding its story being attached to it is a mystery. years past when the ENG ver was release i fell more in love with it and exploring its world and understanding its lore in all sides and every fold. when i finished the game in ENG ver for the 1st time tears fell in my eyes... for me this is the best fantasy RPG that is ever made. until this day i still play RPG and MMORPG and there is no game for me can ever replace TOF in my heart.
Great Video, i did not know this game was a thing also if i can make a request, can you do the Tales of the Abyss next, its the game that i first play and got me into the series.
I would not consider what Maxwell says in the off-spin game about parallel timelines that serious since it seems to be purely to set-up the faux ''erased out of time'' thing they do at the end of that game. In the actual ToS game, it seems like things operate entirely within a mix of stable time loop and a timeline ''aggregate''. Sealed ''original'' Dhaos CANT be noped out of the timeline because it would delete the only reason he has to be noped in the first place, and likely the biggest reason he maintains an existence despite becoming a (reverse?) time paradox is that he dies very soon after and there is never 2 at the same time. Him being sealed is a cornerstone of the new timeline but this new timeline seemly cant exist without the old one by necessity, so the former overwrites the later where it has to be. How the world reacts to time travel seems to have a stress point because the game showcases entirely ''cosmetic'' changes as being harmless and bigger events need to have happened within the margins of what 'originally' happened. IE the Valhalla War still happening and Dhaos being defeated, but what changes is within this hypothetical ''stress limit''.
I knew about the link between Symphonia and Phantasia but had no idea about Dhaos. This also finally explains the cutscene at the start of the game. I had no idea Dhaos had travelled into the future and got sealed. BTW which version of the game were the clips from?
If you still make these these I'd love Unabriged timelines of the following series Xeno Castlevania The Legend of Zelda Shin Megami Tensei Halo Mass Effect
all i know about tales of phantasia is that the OST i listened to a couple years ago was a banger this video gonna go hard i bet dunno what the song at 9:43 is, i wish i knew EDIT: th-cam.com/video/_5p7GT1h6JM/w-d-xo.html found it for anyone who wanted
Also, Mel & dio I don't understand so they killed their old selves yet the events still happen???? Or it was an alternate universe where that happened and they live as changed people
Eruption fang look i just want you to do these things explaning the timelines of castlevania, fire emblem, xenogears, xenosaga and xenoblades, metal gear and resident evil and the final fantasy games if you can't do that tell me at least tell me im tired of you ignoring me
Paused it after you explained how complicated and how nonsensical time travel works in phantasia: to be honest as you were talking I thought, "ok, two parallel universes exists cause of this event, not sure why it doesn't make sense but I'll hear ya out." Then you said how when they travel back to the future they go to the unaltered universe as if there history changes never happened and NOW it clicked why it wouldn't make sense i agree with ya that DOESN'T make sense........oh well i guess.....
As someone who only played the main game I actually learned a fair bit. I still think Phantasia is one of the few old games that really needs a remake.

I knew about the link between Symphonia and Phantasia but had no idea about Dhaos. This also finally explains the cutscene at the start of the game. I had no idea Dhaos had travelled into the future and got sealed.
BTW which version of the game were the clips from?
mostly PS1 if im not mistaken
Phantasia was the game that got me into learning Japanese in the first place
Right on time lol u saved my day
when you actually mitsukete your dream:
What a sad story. Wish I had played this
My 1st tales game.
Dhaos looks like a mithos descendant, I'm just an obsessed Symphonia fan here to expand the world further for myself
very nice :3 i love your timeline videos.
Still i would love to see one from Tales of xillia since it's my favorite tales of game XD
Here's hoping you'll do a retrospective of tales of the abyss
I'm surprised you didn't showcase Dejap's version of the infamous "boat scene". Still, a great video!
Wonder if he’ll ever do a god of war timeline
What about Tales of Vesperia?
If you still make these these I'd love Unabriged timelines of the following series
Xeno
Castlevania
The Legend of Zelda
Shin Megami Tensei
Halo
Mass Effect
I wonder…does this mean that xilla shares the same universe as this games timeline since they both have Maxwell ?
Needs a remake to include the connection with symphonia too 👀
Let’s hope we can do one for the Ar Tonelico franchise :>
Haven't played for a looong while.
Btw love your content
I’m kinda surprised you haven’t done a timeline of metal gear but then again it hard to understand mgs
Tales of phantasia's song is the best
Amazing 😊
all i know about tales of phantasia is that the OST i listened to a couple years ago was a banger
this video gonna go hard i bet
dunno what the song at 9:43 is, i wish i knew
EDIT: th-cam.com/video/_5p7GT1h6JM/w-d-xo.html found it for anyone who wanted
It is part of the Tales of Phantasia Animation Ost. I don't recall the exact name, but it is there.
@@oscarquintanagutierrez8990 thanks bro I found it :D
explain the timeline of live a live
Where did you get the Phantasia anime clips
Do Atelier, Dragon Quest series next, people need to know how good jrpg are.
You do it
@@omensoffate I don't have the time, energy, the will or the knowledge to even begin such projects.
Do a top ten nascar sires and other sires crashes and The loud house and Rwby characters
Someone forgot Summoner's Lineage. JK, the video is great
winona survived dhaos battle?
PHANTASIA CONTENT!? have a like
My favorite game
You should make one of these on the xenoblade series
Wait so does that mean dhaos is alive at the end?
Also, Mel & dio I don't understand so they killed their old selves yet the events still happen???? Or it was an alternate universe where that happened and they live as changed people
Gotta be honest. This story feels like one of the wrong people dying over and over.
GBA: COME FORTH, THUNDER OF THE GAWWDS!
Auuyyyyyyyyyyygyg thank you 😢
Hi
Bro still makes me cry with his last lines
Lol what
Do Minecraft lore
