I said I would cover this game as far back as 2016 and I apologize for keeping you waiting. Tales of Symphonia is special to me as though it is not my favorite Tales game, it was my first. I am impressed how good many of the voice performances are, especially Lloyd and Kratos. Unintentionally, this game is now the longest RECAP on the channel, mainly because the game has 3 dense acts, but also because I had to edit out a bunch of content to keep the recap under 1 hour (a soft, unspoken rule of mine). Well...I did play Phantasia first technically but I barely remembered it the first time played it (and only for like an hour), but Symphonia was when I became completely obsessed with the series (assuming they actually got an English release). Hell, I live in Australia and I had to even import the US version of Tales of the Abyss with swap magic to play it since it never got a PAL release on PS2 (grr Namco....). Played every Tales game since, but I'd still claim the best of the series was from Destiny/Symphonia/Abyss/Vesperia/Graces, still like all the others though.
I was actually introduced into the tables series by ToS: Dawn of the new World. It peaked my curiosity and having played the first one afterwards I was very disappointed that with all this great plot they let ToS2 fall so short.
My first was Tales of Phantasia on GBA. Then was Tales of Legendia...I fell in love with Legendia and resented Symohonia bc everyone praised it and shitted on Legendia 😅

Kratos betrayal seemed so brutal, I was young when playing this game, so a was naive about rpgs and general story tropes ect. So this really nice guy who seemed like he could never do such a thing, then turns on the team, I was like so pissed with him. I wish games could make me feel as many emotions as this one.
My guy, did you do all endings and ruin the grade shop? My last run of the game ended after I purchased everything in the grade shop... Level 3 Genis using Meteor Storm on the first boss? Funniest shit my guy ;)
I didnt play the second game, by the time I knew there was a second one I was kinda out of tales games. Somewhat recently I went back to play symphonia again, AND LET ME JUST SAY, the marble scene gets me every time.... there's so much I can say about the game that I love. Lloyd's voice actor is the same voice actor who played Robin in teen titans which was another thing I loved a lot as a kid.

I just started playing it again after 14 years of putting it off. Its incredible, especially for 2003. One of the best and first Jrpg's ive played. Best tales game hands down. Everything after it are just renditions of it.
freddyvidz It was Abyss that did it for me I loved the story and the deeper meaning too much, but Symphonia is still one of my favorites. Symphonia has my favorite cast as a whole though right up there with Berseria, Zestiria, and the Xillias (I even liked Dawn of a New World it just didn’t really feel like a sequel).
Honestly one of the greatest games I've ever played, I was just the right age when playing it (13 years old) and it utterly gutted me in the best way from turn to turn.

A few differences that can occur during the game 1. During the Zelos betrayal moment, if Lloyd had previously chosen to speak with Kratos instead of one of his other party members at a night in Flanoir, Zelos can actually commit to his betrayal and fight the group resulting in his death upon the scene's end. In this instance, Kratos will permanently join the group instead. 2. In the ending, one of Lloyd's companions will join him on his journey, depending on hidden affection levels throughout the game. Hinted at in Flanoir ( Up to 3 party members will attempt to talk with him in order of affection level before Kratos appearing if he refuses to go with any of them). Collette is the canon one however you can get anyone to do so and it just appears as them walking to join Lloyd in the fade out. Kratos is the exception and Colette will be here instead if he was the one focused. 3. The affection level mentioned above also affects who Mithos controls right after getting Origin. Whoever Lloyd is strongest with will be taken away and needs to be saved, most first timers get Collette as she is most engineered to be Lloyd's soul mate (And it is canon in the sequel) but anyone can get it, except Kratos, Collette takes his place in most scenes that require the "soul mate" to affect progression, as he is required in some events himself. The affection levels with female party members do tend to get gather heated in romance for Lloyd, Sheena being the most expressive.
You probably have a full list of games to get through, but if you could add "The World Ends With You" To that list, I would appreciate a video of that.
That segment where Lloyds loses all his companions one by one as they sacrifice themselves is sooo similar to the last episode of the first season of Sailor Moon, where all the Sailors die one by one to protect Sailor Moon so she can fight queen Beryl (which is not a bad thing because that finale is epic as hell)
I legit randomly decided yesterday to finally start going through some of the Tales games because I played this one back when it came out on the GameCube. I absolutely loved your recap of the story. It brought back lots of memories of the game and how much I loved it.
This has, to this day, been the only game I've given 5 full playthroughs, back-to-back, with no breaks in-between (outside of going to school/work and sleeping/eating, of course). And I enjoyed it greatly every single time.

45:57 This has probably been said a million times already but it it's not Kratos' Sword. Depending on whether you killed Zelos or not, the sword belongs to either Zelos or Kratos and the sword itself will be a different model depending on who it belongs to (since Kratos and Zelos have inherently different default swords in cutscenes). If you killed Zelos, Kratos has unlocked the door for Lloyd. If Zelos is alive, Zelos has kept the door unlocked for him instead. It's to play into the role of Savior that Kratos or Zelos plays. Either of them saves your allies including yourself by helping you get past Yggdrasil's contraptions. In this case, it's Zelos' sword because Zelos also has access to Cruxis as a member of the high order (Don't ask me why to be honest. Yggdrasil is an absolute idiot for trusting Zelos enough to grant him access to important rooms.)

Can you do Tales of the Abyss? It to me is the epitome of the Tales of series both in its story and characterization. I think it would definitely benefit from a recapitulation.
It was good but saying it's the epitome storywise hell no atleast you said "in my opinion" but in my opinion the story is actually kinda boring untill you get to the middle from there on it's extremely good lol but sitting through the beginning wasn't something I wanted to do for a second time 🤣
I definitely agree the story took its sweet time before it took off but when it did it really did distinguish itself as one of my favourite Tales of games. l absolutely loved the central conflict of the story, especially when dealing with the score (predestination vs. free will) and the characters really grew on me. And the opening / ending theme (Bump of Chicken's Karma) is by far the best opening song of any Tales of Game I ever heard.
I’ve long called this game my favourite game. Probably not quite correct, but it’s certainly the game that had the most influence on me as a person. I grew up in a rural, nearly all white town so this game was my introduction to the evils of racism and discrimination. Mithos is such an excellent villain for this kind of story. Even a hero who ended a world destroying war is not immune to discrimination, and his hatred and sadness are totally understandable. I also love Lloyd as a hero. The destruction of Iselia and death of Marble perfectly explain his downright revulsion for senseless slaughter and refusal to accept a world where such evils are justified.
Mithos is my favourite villain of all time. He's just such a compelling character. He's done horrible, unforgivable things, but you understand how he got there and sympathize with him even though you disagree with his decisions. Lloyd is also criminally underrated. People say he's bland, but I don't see it. Then again, people say Yuri Lowell from Vesperia is a super amazingly fantastic character, but I find _him_ bland.
Sorry it took me so long to watch this one. I think this RECAP has inspired me to replay this game myself, although I am considering the PC port on Steam, even though it is locked at 30 FPS. Great retelling of a wonderful tale, and thank you for the hard work put into this one. This game has so much content! Keep at it, and I'll meet you on the next battlefield.
Tales of Symphonia is a story about good people doing things that are terrible to save two worlds tied together by fate and following up the terrible things by finding a solution to the terrible things

I haven't finished the vid but I love this game and the tales series in general. This game got me started on tales. I enjoyed the character development and the set ups for future reveals that made the game really enjoyable on replays
This was my first ever tales game and I love it to this day, crossing my fingers that both it and dawn of the new world comes to switch just like vesperia did
This is the game that really got me into Tales and JRPGs. nothing but love for this one. doubt i'll ever play it again - i had at least 6 play thrus and probably put 1k hours into the whole game- but it was fun while it lasted
Great recap for a very long game! Weirdly enough, it's not even in the Top 5 of my favorite Tales game but it's still really really good and I usually recommend it as a starting point for the series (unless the recomendee doesn't like older games).

This is the spot, but it's when the angels and Pronyma take away Colette that Zelos steps in to fight the group. I know it's not canon, but I prefer this arc as it really does weigh the burden of the team has to do.
I cannot properly express just how much I LOVE the Tales series. I'm still salty that Tales of Destiny 2 (no, not Eternia) never made it to the US. Especially since ToD1 remains my favorite in the franchise.

I’ve played 90% of all of them and I have never been disappointed at all with any of them. Dawn of a New World didn’t really feel like a sequel because the previous cast just felt like they were there for fan service, but I still really liked it.

Mithos _with the Eternal Sword_ is completely OP, possibly the most powerful character in any Tales game. _Without_ it, though, he's incredibly strong, strong enough that 4000 years ago he could already solo the Summon Spirits' tests of combat (Gnome says as much), but he's beatable as a group. There's a _reason_ that the only hope of confronting him was by annulling his pact with Origin. He didn't give up until after he was already beaten.
I like the game but the plot has so much to try and absorb. This is what I remembered prior to watching the video. Colette is the chosen one. Lloyd has to help her on her mission to save the world. Mana supply is low. There is an alternate world where the mana supply is high. There is a mana tug of war. Can both worlds be saved?
18:40 easily beaten down I fought for 45 minutes straight every time I died I was so mad I reset the GameCube I used any and all items in my inventory on my final loss I was so fustrated that I sat there holding my eyes open as I stared at my failure only for a cutscenes to start playing. This is my first experience fighting a boss that I was not supposed to beat in my entire childhood
It hasnt to be Collete who safes lloyd from getting taken over by Mithos. It can be anybody (except Kratos) from the group who does it. Depends on the choices you make and who ends up being your soulmate.
In my first playthrough it was Genis and it made so much sense, since he and Mithos were becoming friends, that I didn't even realize it could be anyone until later on!

Damn, I've been waiting quite a long time for a recap video for Tales of Symphonia! I hope you make more recap videos for other Tales games, like Tales of Vesperia, which very recently got an awesome remake! For the Final Fantasy fans who don't know anything about Tales of Symphonia, its whole plot is very similar to Final Fantasy X, in which a "chosen one" goes on a journey to save to world, only to find out some very shocking, spoilerrific truths about how the villains use the whole journey to maintain the status quo of the world, keeping the world in the plight it was supposed to solve.
The game that could be called origin of tales if we were being literal. A great recap of the overall plot without being bogged down in the minuta. Most of the most quotable lines made it in too. Thanks for this bast from the past and proving once and for all that evil does not lie in the heart of man but in procrastination. Ha I kid.
Symphonia, Crestoria, and Berseria are so far the only Tales of games I've played and later on plan on playing Vesperia and Zestiria. I noticed how in Beseria, certain events from Symphonia are mentioned, such as: The Kharlan War, Yggdrasil, and the Church of Martel. This leads me to believe that Symphonia and Berseria are in some way connected.
Berseria is FILLED with references and namedrops to pretty much every past title. They're not directly connected, but they do small nods, and the idea of multiple dimensions and whatnot is very much a thing. Between Hearts R and Innocence R, they very much show that you can jump between dimensions and between worlds. So you're not entirely wrong. But Zestiria however? That game is directly connected to Berseria. Same world. Zestiria taking place 1000 years after Berseria. And Phantasia is directly connected to Symphonia. Again, same world, with Phantasia taking place 4000 years after Symphonia.
I'd say it's second-best, with Abyss being the best, but Symphonia is definitely tied with Abyss for my favourite and Mithos is my favourite villain of all time.
I just can't believe I took all of this story in as a kid and said "Yeah, this makes sense." It's a posterboy for JRPG convoluted BS. I still enjoyed it though.
I can’t even lie, I’m turned off by the 2.5D gameplay (especially when you don’t have moves in the beginning) at this point in my Tales Career but the story was so intense for this game and I was so young when I first played it I’m going to have to give it a shot again.

I’ve long called this game my favourite game. Probably not quite correct, but it’s certainly the game that had the most influence on me as a person. I grew up in a rural, nearly all white town so this game was my introduction to the evils of racism and discrimination.
Mithos is such an excellent villain for this kind of story. Even a hero who ended a world destroying war is not immune to discrimination, and his hatred and sadness are totally understandable.
I also love Lloyd as a hero. The destruction of Iselia and death of Marble perfectly explain his downright revulsion for senseless slaughter and refusal to accept a world where such evils are justified.
Mithos is my favourite villain of all time. He's just such a compelling character. He's done horrible, unforgivable things, but you understand how he got there and sympathize with him even though you disagree with his decisions.
Lloyd is also criminally underrated. People say he's bland, but I don't see it. Then again, people say Yuri Lowell from Vesperia is a super amazingly fantastic character, but I find _him_ bland.
I started the series with Destiny on the PS1, and am still playing the series today with Berseria, cannot wait for the new one Arise to come out!
This is an example of great storytelling really. I loved JRPGs simply by experiencing the story myself.
Sorry it took me so long to watch this one. I think this RECAP has inspired me to replay this game myself, although I am considering the PC port on Steam, even though it is locked at 30 FPS. Great retelling of a wonderful tale, and thank you for the hard work put into this one. This game has so much content! Keep at it, and I'll meet you on the next battlefield.

Tales of Symphonia is a story about good people doing things that are terrible to save two worlds tied together by fate and following up the terrible things by finding a solution to the terrible things
Doing things that are terrible? As Raine would say it "we are not in a situation to have the courtesy to play fair" but even that is bullshit. What's not doing terrible things? Allowing human ranches to operate?

I haven't finished the vid but I love this game and the tales series in general. This game got me started on tales. I enjoyed the character development and the set ups for future reveals that made the game really enjoyable on replays
Tales of Symphonia may not be my favorite Tales of game, but no one can deny the effect this game had on the rest of the series.
This was my first ever tales game and I love it to this day, crossing my fingers that both it and dawn of the new world comes to switch just like vesperia did

This is the game that really got me into Tales and JRPGs. nothing but love for this one. doubt i'll ever play it again - i had at least 6 play thrus and probably put 1k hours into the whole game- but it was fun while it lasted

Great recap for a very long game! Weirdly enough, it's not even in the Top 5 of my favorite Tales game but it's still really really good and I usually recommend it as a starting point for the series (unless the recomendee doesn't like older games).

46:54 But in my second play through I learned you could re-recruit Kratos...which then makes Zelos fight the party and die. I can't remember if it was here or somewhere else though...
This is the spot, but it's when the angels and Pronyma take away Colette that Zelos steps in to fight the group. I know it's not canon, but I prefer this arc as it really does weigh the burden of the team has to do.

I cannot properly express just how much I LOVE the Tales series. I'm still salty that Tales of Destiny 2 (no, not Eternia) never made it to the US. Especially since ToD1 remains my favorite in the franchise.
ReaverPrime Yeah same. It still kinda baffles me that it isn’t more mainstream for how amazing EVERY single one has been. I’ve played 90% of all of them and I have never been disappointed at all with any of them. Dawn of a New World didn’t really feel like a sequel because the previous cast just felt like they were there for fan service, but I still really liked it.

Mithos is completely Op. He's a close Sephiroth to me.
I mean technically you did, he was going to be taken over by his crystal. At that point he wouldn’t be himself anymore.

But that was because he gave up. He had that crystal for thousands of years. People can turn quickly in game. The old woman was captured when she was old so that was a few weeks at least.
Mithos _with the Eternal Sword_ is completely OP, possibly the most powerful character in any Tales game. _Without_ it, though, he's incredibly strong, strong enough that 4000 years ago he could already solo the Summon Spirits' tests of combat (Gnome says as much), but he's beatable as a group. There's a _reason_ that the only hope of confronting him was by annulling his pact with Origin.
He didn't give up until after he was already beaten.

This is what I remembered prior to watching the video. Colette is the chosen one. Lloyd has to help her on her mission to save the world. Mana supply is low. There is an alternate world where the mana supply is high. There is a mana tug of war. Can both worlds be saved?

18:40 easily beaten down I fought for 45 minutes straight every time I died I was so mad I reset the GameCube I used any and all items in my inventory on my final loss I was so fustrated that I sat there holding my eyes open as I stared at my failure only for a cutscenes to start playing. This is my first experience fighting a boss that I was not supposed to beat in my entire childhood

It can be anybody (except Kratos) from the group who does it. Depends on the choices you make and who ends up being your soulmate.
In my first playthrough it was Genis and it made so much sense, since he and Mithos were becoming friends, that I didn't even realize it could be anyone until later on!

Damn, I've been waiting quite a long time for a recap video for Tales of Symphonia! I hope you make more recap videos for other Tales games, like Tales of Vesperia, which very recently got an awesome remake! For the Final Fantasy fans who don't know anything about Tales of Symphonia, its whole plot is very similar to Final Fantasy X, in which a "chosen one" goes on a journey to save to world, only to find out some very shocking, spoilerrific truths about how the villains use the whole journey to maintain the status quo of the world, keeping the world in the plight it was supposed to solve.

The game that could be called origin of tales if we were being literal. A great recap of the overall plot without being bogged down in the minuta. Most of the most quotable lines made it in too. Thanks for this bast from the past and proving once and for all that evil does not lie in the heart of man but in procrastination.

Symphonia, Crestoria, and Berseria are so far the only Tales of games I've played and later on plan on playing Vesperia and Zestiria. I noticed how in Beseria, certain events from Symphonia are mentioned, such as: The Kharlan War, Yggdrasil, and the Church of Martel. This leads me to believe that Symphonia and Berseria are in some way connected.
Berseria is FILLED with references and namedrops to pretty much every past title. They're not directly connected, but they do small nods, and the idea of multiple dimensions and whatnot is very much a thing. Between Hearts R and Innocence R, they very much show that you can jump between dimensions and between worlds. So you're not entirely wrong.
But Zestiria however? That game is directly connected to Berseria. Same world. Zestiria taking place 1000 years after Berseria.
And Phantasia is directly connected to Symphonia. Again, same world, with Phantasia taking place 4000 years after Symphonia.
Bandai Namco, please remake it!

I'd say it's second-best, with Abyss being the best, but Symphonia is definitely tied with Abyss for my favourite and Mithos is my favourite villain of all time.

I can’t even lie, I’m turned off by the 2.5D gameplay (especially when you don’t have moves in the beginning) at this point in my Tales Career but the story was so intense for this game and I was so young when I first played it I’m going to have to give it a shot again.
