      @@blucka98 I guess it is difficult to define a masterpiece. Is it based on commercial mass success or is it determined by the opinions of a handful or righteous elites who puts the price of art. Something is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it. But then that still doesn't necessarily make it a masterpiece. Jeff Koons Popeye Statute for example that Steve Wynn purchased for $28 million. Is that a masterpiece?

    • @blucka98
      @blucka98 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@igloozoo3771 i see your point, but the thing about the statue is that someone with special talent can make that, and it actually took effort to conceive. now that doesn’t necessarily make the piece worth 28 million dollars, and it certainly doesn’t make it a masterpiece, but a true “masterpiece” is really only subjective to certain people, I could look at, say, jackson pollock’s work and think that anyone could make something like that, while another person could look at it and define a meaning behind it.
      The thing with this guys work is that it’s objectively shit, i mean, in the sense that everyone looks at his art and thinks its shit, not just how some people look at pollock’s art and think its shit while others don’t. Really, the people that bought his work for so much money really only bought it because they can and all their money is burning a hole through their pockets, not because they see a meaning behind his “art”. So really i think him, and anyone who buys his works are just pretentious, and any “meaning” you can dig up for his pieces isn’t what he intended to say, this dude just puts colourful dots on a page with no rhyme or reason because he knows some rich douchebag out there is gonna buy them

    • @igloozoo3771
      @igloozoo3771 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blucka98 I think some pop art like the works of Andy Warhol and Damien Hurst is deliberate to question what a masterpiece is like what we are doing here. It is also mass appeal cause it make people think...."Hey, I can do that" but once they try...the supposedly simple art isn't so simple to replicate after all. That being said, I think a true masterpiece makes one believe in the existence of a higher power or higher state of being because it is difficult to conceive humans merely evolved from animals and can create such transcending beauty. This is why we are shocked by child singers like Jackie Evancho.

    Love how at 3:16 it pans to some real art then just goes back to dots. Dude has a good color pallet sure... the most interesting one to me was the one where its got a lot of red and green that blend and white and black some how it works and I suppose thats impressive... but it looks like someone took a shit ton of gum and stuck it on a canvas without much rhyme or reason... one piece like this might speak volumes more than a couple and the over saturation is obvious and the repetition is boring and painful with lack of real creativity or much actual thought provoking elements to actually retain any interest you had in the first place the monotony of this work is just hard to deal with almost. I hardly even understand especially when he says its not about the money lmfao the only reason I could do this shit work and possibly be proud of it is the bullshit praise and recognition it garnishes. I have never really understood the interest in Damien Hurst, his works are quite simplistic with little thought, but good luck to him. But when you have made a name for yourself you get complacent and believe even though the shit before sold and there was a furor around it that even worse shit will now sell. If people are still happy to pay £Ms for it so be it. To try to shock a public to gain notoriety. It would be no different to me placing peoples heads on stakes with various expressions, laughter, sadness etc on their faces and passing it off as art.

    • @christianhaynes9981
      @christianhaynes9981 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say that his work have a tremendous amount of thought put into them. His works are extremely powerful and thought provoking, and really tackle a lot of topics, especially life and death. The whole shock factor aspect was a huge part of the YBA movement, and was something that really forwarded contemporary art. I would also like to know why you think he is now making art just to sell, because surely being a rich and famous artist gives you even more of the freedom to make art that you really want to make because you don't have many financial worries.

    No one but the artist will ever know just what importance each brush mark of paint will have on the final effect, but it does matter greatly to him as painting is an experience and not just the product which is merely a documentation of the experience. The very first stroke is likely covered up by more, but without it, the painting would never have been actualized.

    Honestly, if he actually came up with the color palette for these paintings himself I'd actually have a little respect for the work cause I do like the color rhythm these have, but the fact that he has to steal the color palette from other artists work 3:16, I have no respect for these because there's no originality to them.

    It’s okay. There are many weekend hobbyists who could do what he’s done here. I think the paintings would be more interesting with a wider variation in brushstroke. Or he could try a glazing medium to create a greater degree of depth.
