I was there in 1991. I found Nicholas Treadwell, Enfant terrible of the English art world, setting up in a car showroom because the organisers wouldn't let him in the main hall. We got on very well. The works he was showing were streets ahead of the humdrum rubbish on show at Art Basel. I was in Basel to study the neuropsychiatric effects of melatonin.

I used to work the fair every year for McKee Gallery from New York. Great little city , lots of fun. I miss the Beyeler Foundation, the Kunst Museum , visiting the Isenheim altarpiece in Colmar, and the most awesome Doner Kebab place just down Clarastrasse from the Fair.

I had coffee in Basel and peed. Then I moved on to Italy. Later I returned to Basel and peed then got a coffee to go!
Oh yes, I'd like to see the art show, but the timing was wrong. But I loved Italy, all of it. Luckily I visited many countries in Europe and UK while living in Wuerzberg, Germany. It would be great to return again, perhaps Next art Basel!

If this place went up in smoke, hardly anybody would be upset by its apparent loss except for high-rolling art investors.
Outside of the rarified, so-called, fine art movement nobody gives two hoots for this dross called modern art. It is all very much a case of the Emperor's new clothes in play. If Tracey Emin's unmade bed was dumped in a layby, everyone walking by would assume it is just another unfortunate bit of fly-tipping.

Art Basel is a tragedy for art at so many levels. One of the people interviewed say that the event is no longer Eurocentric-nothing further from the truth. This event is at its core a representation of what art and culture means for the Western cultural establishment. Everything that is fundamentally wrong with art right now is display in Art Basel. The way neoliberalism is manipulating the world of art is very worrisome. You can smell the money more than the paint on the canvas. The way they also have an event for designers and decorators tells you a lot, it feels like “ok , get your art here and then go across the street and buy the couch to match your painting or installation”. Also the fact that the event has branches in Miami and Hong Kong is more evidence of how the main goal of these kind of events is profit and not too much else. Can we find another European country that can surpass Switzerland when it comes to the love of money, banks and financial institutions?-it is so much the culture of that country. Miami-well, I don’t know if we need to go deep to describe perhaps one of the most superficial cities in United States. Hong Kong…well, not exactly a city know for its intellectual life, just like Miami. If you listen to the narrative of these people with their German accent, the way they talk about Art Basel and the future of such event, you can feel that they are comparing this glorified bazar with the biennials…scary as hell. Quite frankly, it would not surprise me if eventually, not to far in the future, these type of awfulness ends up as importan as the Venice biennale, or the Sao Paolo bienal. Depressing.

Art Basel is not the centre of The Modern Art World, the centre is the following art theory:
Images are made of 2D shapes, 2D shapes represent 3D form; images represent 3D form.
All Modern Art has to bow to it.

It is not presented in general education as are many other essential subjects one reason is the exclusive patriarchal system we exist under which does not value aesthetic principles in daily life. These events are mainly playgrounds for the white supremacist indo european wealthy.
