Ruth cackling as she flies past a doorway on a bicycle...you have no idea how much I needed that... Remember joy? Happiness? Yea, me neither... But Ruth reminded me...

I feel this joy every time I see new seedlings in my garden. I get giddy. Drives my kids nuts, if you go by their attitudes, but they love me. They help plant seeds with me. Teenagers.
Ruth does find the joy in her day to day.

The random folks they get for these shows are just as great as the hosts. You can take one quick glance at Bill and know his family's had saltwater in their veins for generations. He's dripping with authenticity. Same with the basket maker and the butcher. And that church scene at the end. Ngl it was kinda touching to see that one guy so happy to have his childhood chapel being used again to do an old timey Christmas service. And all that's just the stuff from this one episode! Every episode of all these farm series is full of stuff like this!

What amazes me more that these machines were once WIDELY used everywhere, is that they are STILL functional and being kept running after more than a century later.
Nowadays we can't even go 5 years with something without it ''withering'' away and having to either see to hopelessly pricy repairs or simply buy something new. I think if we had such machines that lasted longer, people would have a greater appreciation for the items they keep, generally would contribute to less junk being manufactured in such large quantities. But of course the corporations wouldn't want to be left without your money - so it's really sad to where we've come with our consumption.

Funny enough one was a ladies maid in central London but then was quickly moved to a country manor where there was an increase to the household of two- her and her newborn. Considering that that would usually result in instant dismissal , one wonders who was the father? Lol.

It is just amazing that if I heard right and this is set around 1906 that this is the world just 16 years before my great grandmither was born who is currently in the room underneath mine and whit whom I just had christmas. He told of washing clothes with ash, walking three houses ove in the village to the well to get water, having pigs over summer and slughtering them before winter as keeping them would be to expensive. By watching this series and the ones before that I realized not much has changed in the way of life I experience through her experience daily back to almost the iron age in simple living land folk. Housing changed and available materials increased in number but most of the techniques stayed almost the same! Just puts history into a closer timeframe!

Thomas Jefferson had "in house" toilets, unheard of in his time. He'd designed a system for each relief room, clay lined pipes leading from just above the river -- a source of clean air, and from the relief room another pipe pulling the air out of the house,. I don't remember how he managed to keep the air moving, but it worked.
One side effect was that even in the hottest summer days the plantation house remained cool from all that river air.
