- Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn recreate the running of a farm as it would've been in the Edwardian era. The trio establish their domicile, scrubbing flagstone floor and cleaning out a clogged chimney. I'm a former Brit ( became a US citizen a year ago ) and we have so much history and invention that my (now) fellow Yanks can only dream of!
I read the Morwellham Quay wiki & it sounds like the county council stopped funding their outdoor museum right around the time this was filmed, basically bringing the place to bankruptcy- so sad!! (Perhaps a response to impacts of the recent GFC?) Thankfully, it appears to have been quickly taken over by & funded by a nearby similar historical site...?
Im British, living in Bulgaria. Whilst there is a crazy amount of archaeology and history here its not accessible like it is in the UK. I really miss being able to say "lets go to Alnwick castle" or lets go to the railway museum - I mean my neighbour literally had a castle in his garden, we had a ruined castle up the road as kids to play on - its everywhere and its open and its accessible.
The National Trust is an amazing institute and I never begrudged my membership.
In Bulgaria its all under the ground and its illegal to dig it up cos they dont have the resources to look after it and stop it from getting robbed.

I love this show. It's peaceful and informative. There's no anger. There's no politics. It's just three friends learning about the eras of the past and learning some of the skills used by people in those eras. Ruth's laugh is infectious. It's just lovely to see people living and getting along so well with each other.
Yes thank goodness none of the terribleness of todays world Leslie but a way to learn how we looked after ourselves without all the modern conveniences,detergents and medicines but natural remedies and such that didnt poison our earth.

Thank you for saying what I feel. When you immerse yourself in loving one another, you create a healthy, happy environment. It isn't perfect, but you learn together and help each other. I hope we can all try to live this way, in whatever era we find ourselves.

Ironically, I'm sure that sheep's head stewed with cheap fresh vegetables was far healthier than the tinned and heavily processed products aimed at the Edwardian middle classes

(assuming they actually had enough to eat) I think throughout history the poor have generally been healthier. They are simple good food while the rich ate lots of meat, sugar, white flour etc, hence why they got the 'diseases of kings', aka all of our leading killers today now that everyone can afford to eat like shit

Sure, but the middle classes were still classed as 'peasants' until not too long ago - the middle class even going back to the middle ages were technically property owners if they 'owned' a farm, because as long as the land or property you 'owned' was on a Lord's land, they still owned you and everything you do essentially. Meaning you were still a peasant. The class system wasn't dissimilar to the American system, for example - a lot of American's today call themselves middle class as long as they have 2 cars, a large-ish house with quite good jobs. That's not the case in England. To be middle class, you have money and a certain breeding. If i inherited £1 million today, i wouldn't suddenly become middle class, regardless of how i lived. My class is dictated upon my breeding and history of my family to a great extent, that even if i were a millionaire - i just wouldn't be middle class according to most people.

Yeah it's a bit mean of him, but even if the chicken couldn't fly, due to its dimensions especially counting for all the Ruffles in the feathers creating friction, it's terminal velocity is much lower than that of a human, so even if it did suffer injury upon landing it would be less than that of a human and even with Fair bit of speed as its whole body has a lot less weight to support upon impact.

I have chickens and I YEET them all the time. I haven't clipped their wings and they parachute down without a problem. Remember they descend from jungle fowl that used to roost in trees...

That’s not necessarily true some strains of chickens when not fattened up can fly, the Indian jungle fowl for example cannot keep itself aloft for long however it carries the capability of flight, being the most oldest genus of the modern domestic chicken. And thus retains its more wild traits.

Me too. Although I suspect they have days off so there probably wouldn't be one for every day. Ruth is married and her kids were teenagers at the time of filming this I think so I doubt she just went "see you I'm off" and left for a whole year lol.

Actually, despite what it says on Wikipedia, it was already being called the First World War while it was still being fought in 1918. The name was first coined by Lieutenant-Colonel Charles à Court Repington as recorded in a diary entry of 10 September 1918. And a year later they continue to pour out new content and haven't done a damn thing about fixing the audio problems in this and (at least) Wartime farm. It's a shame as these videos are such good content and worth multiple rewatches but the sound problems take away so much from enjoying them.

I think you are correct!! The only one of the 5 period farm series Alex wasn't on was Tales From The Green Valley(2005), and that was the first series they made. So, his first appearance was on Victorian Farm(2009). And this was the second series he was a part of! So I do believe he started keeping chickens between Victorian and Edwardian Farm(2011).
Okay can we just say that Peter and Alex are such a dynamic due?

As a historian, I love these documentaries. I am so unbelievably jealous lol
My greatgranddad was a carpenter and farmer and my village was fairly backwards...they lived in a house with shingles outside made of hazel rods, wood, and a mix of clay, straw and uhm...poo, but built a modern (back then) house with a stone foundation and bricks on top. We still have a bunch of stuff, including machine-like stuff. I've seen that all my life and never really thought about it.
Also, my grandma had and used a stove like Ruth is using now up until I was around 7th grade...and I'm 30. She didn't even have anything else to cook, but she did have an oven for baking long before I was born. She quite liked that stove since it was the most amazing and lovey thing, truly, obviously much newer and in much better condition than Ruth's. She sold it to a collector eventually.
My sister cooks on-and heats her home with an old coal and gas range. It’s lovely. But I admit I would t want to deal with bringing up coal from the cellar and dealing with klinkers and ash and dust. She has super efficient hepa filters tho. She’s not old fashioned enough to not care about breathing coal dust☺️. She’s got a couple Victoria’s and gas fireplaces and so many oil lamps the kind with painted shades. When the power goes out her house doesn’t look or feel at all any different. It is beautiful. Plus hens eggs and garden canning for veg and summer fruits in winter.
I am lucky she is so industrious bc I’m disabled and could never. I wish I could.

I watched when they lived for a year on The 17th Century Farm in The Green Valley...just to see the light that they have in the house on the Edwardian Farm, let alone the thatching machine for the roofs...I'm so happy for them & I'm sure they were too. What a huge difference in farming from the 17th Century. Wonderful show & very informative, like finding out that they would use chickens to clean out the chimney. Love the peace & the good energy of everyone involved.

Every time I rewatch the historical farm shows, I always count how many minutes it takes in episode 1 before Peter is absolutely covered in filth. XD
I have been watching this series out of sequence in order to view episodes in which I had a particular interest. Now I am at Episode One. In the early 1940's, near the start of WW 2 my grandparents bought what had been an Amish farm. No electricity, telephone, indoor plumbing or other modern fixtures. When my family stayed for a weekend we lived as did Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn. I'm really enjoying this series as it takes me back to a time (I have an excellent memory sharply remembering events that occurred when I was one and two years old) which many call "a simple life" but in actuality was difficult and required a high skill level merely to survive. A five/five star rating for this series.
The people needs more series like this! Ive watched them all and hope for more! Please make more!

Calcium carbide will do the same, it produces acetylene which is used mostly for lamps (carbide lamps) but they will very slowly release the acetylene and it will go from gravel (whatever grade you have, I use powder for my cannons and pea for my lamps) to a stinky dust which is useless

This series was particularly interesting for me. Not only is it the year my father was born and which my grandparents lived, but they were also from Devon. I would love to have this experience like this marvelous team did. Thank you so much for airing it for me to watch. It meant a lot to me.

Back in Edwardian times they didn't know that prion diseases can transfer across species, so eating a sheep's head seemed like a fine thing to do.... I would have qualms.
It's no different that eating tacos de cabeza or barbacoa in mexico, its perfectly safe to eat head.
It’s still a fine thing to do. The BSE scare was mostly in the media and all those cows didn’t need to be slaughtered. You’re more likely to die driving to the grocery store than you are getting anything from eating the entire animal.

wow, so they took on cleaning & restoring the Edwardian farm after doing all that work on the Victorian Farm! Real troopers they are.
And then they did War Time Farm and then Tudor Monastary Farm and before all of them they did Tales From The Green Valley, but Alex wasn't a part of that one.
Can somebody fix the sound of this? At times the sound of the scene, narrator and music are all at the same Level. It makes it hard to understand anything when actors and narrator talk at the same time.
The floor washing reminds me of washing black and white vinyl tiles 55 years ago 😂

@@annika_panicka Ohhhh, I've heard the term, and knew what it meant, but never realised it was American. It always sounded quite British to me! I guess it came from "dish" as in a meal/ something to eat? Kinda like the term "snack" ( or "snacc" , lol) that young people use these days? The evolution of language is so fascinating! Anyway, yes- do bring it back! I'll help!

My grandparents had a wood stove until I was three or four years old so that would have been either 1999 or 2000. (I grew up on their farm in south east Queensland Australia)
Some people here in the UK still have wood burners and ranges so working in their living rooms or kitchens. My Grandparents have a gas powered Aga cooker which heats both the hot water and central heating, so its like walking into a different country when you walk into their house from what might be a very cold winter's day outside. I even wear a t-shirt and nothing else on top if I know I'm going round there. A couple of my mum's neighbours have wood burners and open fires. Mum also has an open fire in her dining room.
@@jenlfpotter3870 my grandparents stove heated their hot water too, though no need for central heating in out climate, because it heated the water it was obviously lit 24/7 so the kitchen was like a freaking sauna at least six months of the year (winter really only lasts 6-8 weeks and 4-6 weeks of spring and autumn weather respectively and summer the rest of the year), which is why they eventually got an electric oven an water heater. I know a lot of people who have those small wood ovens and use them during winter and power outages, especially in rural areas, we had one for a while but moved and they are expensive to buy and install.
I miss the wood stove. My dad built our house in the 1980s and it had a wood stove. My dad passed in 2019 and as he knew mom couldn't upkeep the orchard, chickens, and land he had her get ready to sell when he was sick with cancer. I miss that house so much. It's super handy to have in a power outage.
In the episode Ruth said that cooking ranges were produced up until the 1930s but my dads house the house I was born in and have now inherited was built in 1954 and came with a range, I remember the range it did excellent roast potatoes, my mum used it when they first moved in 1963 and it came out in 1979 although they had an electric cooker in 1965, the estate would have all had these ranges I would estimate around 300 houses and so they must have been produced well into the late 1950s at least
I would pay good money to watch a show with just Ruth and her daughter trying all sorts of historical crafts.
