@rentslave I like your comment that it was a warm night, because just last night I saw it mentioned on TV that yes, New Year's Eve 1965 was indeed New York's warmest December 31st on record. (The coldest was 1917). Last night in New York was in the 40s...short of the 1965 temps but still considered mild for New Year's Eve.

On Friday, December 31, 1965, "THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON" was on the air (and if I remember correctly, Woody Allen was among the evening's guests). Normally, Johnny taped his show earlier in the evening, but sometimes made an exception on New Year's Eve. Veteran NBC announcer Ben Grauer was in Times Square, covering the moments until the ball dropped from atop the Allied Chemical builidng, signalling the start of 1966...

Tony: My guess would be that there wasn't enough light to film the outdoor shots with a color camera, since at the time they generally needed more powerful lighting to make the image come through.

Grauer also mentions the renewed optimism of a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Vietnam as President Johnson had just despatched Ambassador to the UN Arthur Goldberg to Rome to see the Pope as well as Ambassador at Large Harriman to various Eastern European capitals to put out peace feelers.
Additionally there had been a long bombing pause on North Vietnam since the Christmas truce to try and convince the North Vietnamese to come around the conference table, unfortunately nothing came of any of it.
Also a nice mention of Gemini 7 which just spent 14 days orbiting the Earth and only came down on 18th December with both astronauts showing no long term problems of their mammoth stint in space.

And Grauer references to a looming transit strike that would happen right after the new year commenced (also referencing Michael Quill, who as I remember reading suffered a stroke during the strike, but still managed to get a deal done before passing away almost immediately afterwards)! That strike would lead to New York's Taylor Law taking effect a little over a year later (early 1967) that forbade strikes by public employees.

2:03- that is a good way of showing the new year. I don't understand why now it is the year shown horizontally every year and in small numbers on the tippy-top. I'll take this any new year.

  • @altfactor

@dw438 That may be true, but color TV cameras back then weren't that sensitive to light. Although NBC may or may not have had a color TV mobile ubnit available, it's cameras (the first-generation RCA TK-41) might not have delivered a sastifactory image under the available lighting condition.
Note the tone, which was the on-the-hour tone for the NBC-TV network.
FYI: Johnny Carson's "Tonight" show was normally taped a few hours before it aired, but on New Year's Eve, the show was done live.

Note that at 2:10 of this clip, the camera zooms out to show a neon sign promoting New York's WNBC Radio (which broadcast at 660 on the AM dial).
I suspect that camera shot was intentional.

0:30 - Note the Camel cigarettes billboard at the bottom left of the picture. It featured the face of a smoker with a big circle hole where his lips would meet. Smoke (actually steam) came out of that hole, making it look like the man in the ad was actually smoking. The signage was removed later that new year (1966).

All of NBC's color remote units were in warmer climes getting ready for the New Year's football bowl games ... technology wasn't as easy, cheap or ubiquitous as it is now ... so they used a smaller, black-and-white news remote unit - still as big as a Greyhound bus those days ...

@edshaw4947927 Actually, it was more like people had common sense to avoid Times Square on New Year's Eve. The only time I saw the ball drop in person (1984-'85), I did it from 50th street and Broadway at a time that was MUCH less crowded AND you had a MUCH better view of the ball dropping. Today, that whole area is a madhouse and I would never do it from there.

The reporter mentioned the escalation of the war in Vietnam, the Dow Jones hitting almost 1,000, and the increase in social security tax to pay for medi-care. As we know, in 1966 the war in Vietnam got much worse and the stock market tanked, I was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss wishing I was anywhere else except Nam. And the futre of medi-care is being debated by our Presidential candidates today. The world continues to turn. What happens next nobody knows.
