  • From a distant planet land comes the hero Ultraman. Here's a look at the second entry of the Ultra series: Ultraman (1966-1967).

What surprised me the most about Ultraman is how ALIEN he felt. No one knows who he is, what he wants, where he's going, or why he keeps risking his life for this planet which he accidentally went to. One of my favorite moments of the series was the showdown between Ultraman and Mephilas (who, for any non-fans, is the big blue-eyed monkey guy). These two aliens both have their own mysterious motives for the Earth. Now they're fighting, and nearly kill each other. But they don't, and end up going their separate ways. Why? Because, as Mephilas puts it, "there's no point in aliens killing each other." Ultraman, at his roots, is an alien, and no catchy theme song or special power will take that away from him. But yet he fights on. Why? Well, maybe even he doesn't know. All he knows is that the Earth is in danger, and he will fight, even if he may never rise again.

True, however we now know why the Ultramen were risking their lives for the humans on Earth. For anyone who does not know, it was stated in the Ultraman Mebius series that the Ultramen used to look like humans too. Their forms changed to what we know them as because they created their own source of light and energy that magically transformed them into Ultramen and granted them unique abilities. And since the humans on Earth resembled who they used to be, they decided to use their power to protect them.

    • @kennethsatria6607
      @kennethsatria6607 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Isn't it pretty obvious by the final episode he fights cause he's grown fond of humanity?
I think he was just doing his job as an Ultra and just saved Shin cause he was caught in the battle, but Ultraman definitely does want to protect us from harm.
I think Shin Ultraman tackles this in the most interesting way cause Lipiah has crossed a line by interferring directly to stop kaiju and prevent alien invasions of Earth, alongside bonding himself to Shin, even fight against Zoffy and the Land of Light because they would sacrifice humanity for the greater good.
This fits your pondering better cause by the end Ultraman can't think of a solid reason why he wants to protect humanity who has shown the capacity for paranoia, immaturity, ignorance and fear that random aliens can freely manipulate them with promises of power.
Beyond all that he saw a man sacrifice his life to protect a child, and he's also bonded with the SSSP members, Ultraman loves humanity almost unconditionally.

    Clickbaity title aside.
I think what makes Ultraman(franchise in general, not just the first one) really special, is that compared to say Kamen Rider, Metal heroes, Sentai, and so on, Ultraman feels more akin like Straight up science Fiction storytelling like say Star Trek with how they try to present high concept ideas and keep finding new ways to keep the set ups interesting. It's one of those Japanese shows that just stands the test of time and it's easy to see why it's become super influential to so many series.

I remember the first time I've ever watch an Ultraman tv series.
The early episode of Ultraman Tiga, you can see how the people had to used various means to defeat the aliens, and sometimes it work, and sometimes it doesn't.
Honestly, thinking back, I was more interested in Daigo, the human that was chosen to be one of the three Ultra Warrior, Ultraman Tiga, than the Ultraman itself. He's the newcomer that just wants to do his best, and he actually almost died in the first episode, which in turn causes him to be the Chosen One.
As the story progress, his character developed, and you just can't help but follow through his adventure. And the world... Ohhoho, it was entertaining. Not all the aliens were bad, and the story CAN get pretty dark at times, but Daigo and the rest of the squad act as the light in the end of the tunnels, teaching you to hold on to hope.
It helps me develope in my early years, when I was stucked in a pretty hard times.
So, I think the story of Ultraman is good regardless of the age it is shown. A great piece of media, even if the action is laughably bad.

I'm honestly tired of the cynical, darker, more realistic renditions of honest icons of justice, love, and peace, i.e Batman, Ultraman, and Superman. Part of their appeal, specifically when written at their best, is how they create the true image of a hero or overcome problems. Just look at Batman in the animated Justice League and JLU and his own animated series or Superman in All Star Superman and Superman for all seasons. Instead of the angsty manchildren that most modern depictions display them as, both heroes are honest, hardworking, think outside of the box to solve problems, thinks about others, and just has the heartwarming idea of a hero. Just look at Batman's conversation with Ace; Batman will never return to that way of kindness ever again with the way heroes are constantly "broken down" or "turned realistic" today.

@@louiswilkerson2747 Look at who the creators and editors of today are and you'll see WHY all the heroes are being deconstructured. Most of these creators are extremely cynical and in the worst cases mentally ill people. I dare you to read Tweets from these guys and tell me it's otherwise!
There many "fans" who claim to be fans of superhero who praise the darker versions; what kids liked earlier were the more virtuous, heroic versions of the characters, not the neurotic, mentally ill versions of these characters being touted as the definitive incarnations now! I HATE where the American comic book industry is now but it will not make the reforms it needs to survive, it does NOT pay people living wages, turns away better creators BECAUSE of politics and the insanely low wages. I think things will only get better when the current version of the comic market of North America DIES completely.
Hollywood in general NEVER understood superheroes. There are only 2 directors who ever did live-action adaptations of characters that were faithful in spirit in the last 43 years -- Richard Donner (Superman the Movie) and Sam Raimi (the original Spider-Man trilogy). The other live-action adaptations were cynical or the directors based their adaptations off of later comics like Marvel's Ultimate run and DC 52 which is when DC stopped being DC Comics for many people. All the GOOD animated shows and comics mentioned were produced prior to 2010. They were produced by people who were given more autonomy and didn't have to deal as much with the political BS that they do today.
The people generally making animated product today are cynics and produce up to a certain level but it's not very good in general. There is a level of mediocre constancy and it makes me sad when people praise animated adaptations when the original comics were at least 20 times better than the animated films!

@@JosephFlores-yn4yi Yeah, people don't understand the basic decency of the classic superheroes.
I hated what Geoff Johns did to Captain Marvel, the monstrosity DC calls "Shazam." It's an awful reconception of the character and it's not going to last. It's already been canceled because they couldn't keep the book on a monthly, regular schedule and even Johns' most loyal fans got tired of waiting between issues!
The original 1940s Captain Marvel was fine -- MUCH better than any character called "Captain Marvel" today. I actually like the Golden Age Captain Marvel BETTER than Superman.
Johns should have just had DC buy Miracleman if he wanted to do something closer to that deconstructed character. The problem is Marvel bought Miracleman first and even they couldn't sell the character! The original 1950s Marvelman reprints didn't sell. Marvel did reprints of all the 1980s and 1990s Miracleman comics but they weren't huge sellers and they quietly canceled it and haven't done anything with the character in years. The Miracleman reprint trades, btw, have been turning up at discount stores like Ollies. The only trade I haven't been able to pick for a fraction of MSRP is the fourth trade which goes up to issue 20; Marvel published through issue 23 (the last one finished) but haven't collected those last 3 issues and I don't seem them doing that since the character didn't sell well.

Ultraman is the first Japanese superhero I remember.
I don't remember exactly WHEN I first saw him but it was probably in the 1970s. I wasn't alive until a few years after the first telecast of the series in the US.
Now that they're showing the early Ultra series on PlutoTV, I'm appreciating the character again.
I hope they don't screw it up in the new reimaginated Ultraman movie. Anno has a fairly track record with subjects outside of Eva. I liked his Cutie Honey movie and the Shin Godzilla received generally good reviews. Some of the changes I've heard for Ultraman in Shin Ultraman have me concerned but we'll see...

I will say that I disagree with the idea of a "Clark Kent" like character falling out of favor is not true. I'm part of many groups of many fandoms that find the "dark" and "edgy" characters are not something that we can really relate with. Most people at least believe themselves to be good and want to find characters we can relate and look up to. Hell, the most popular characters in anime and Toku shows are usually good hearted individuals trying to do the right thing. Naruto, Goku, Saitama, and many others. Do they always succeed in everything they do? Of course not, but then again neither does Clark Kent.
Granted, I don't know if you are talking about the "dark" and "edgy" characters we see in series like, say, Riverdale or the live action Teen Titans show or other similar shows, but this is how it came off and thought I'd throw my two cents out there.

Ultraman is related to japan's origin as a country... Kaiju and godzilla franchise represent the nature and nuclear disaster that overwhelm japan from time to time. The kaiju and godzilla stories usually become the "man vs nature" type of story. And the ultraman is a story about miracle that will comes to us if we are not giving up. The story always comes in the following structure:
    1. Human doing everything they can, including using powerful technology to fight the monster
    2. They failed
    3. Ultraman comes to save the day
Calling ultraman names before henshin basically simbolize our prayer to god when we do everything we can but still failed to survive.
Rather than political agenda, i think ultraman franchise is more like japan's expression towards their situation. Like a poem or an art
