we have been using electric under blankets for several years and they are brill . flick the switch with no 3 setting for an hour before bed time and turn it off as even i got too warm . its just lovely to get into a warm bed . i have seen some with people sitting with one wraped around them but i think they are made differently because the ones for bed have to be flat . if there are any b. outs then the hot water bottle will have to do .

My Silentnight single electric blanket has 3 heat settings on high it uses 2,23p per hour. That's according to the power measuring device as used by the BlackBeltBarrister (yes I bought one).

    • @blackbearish

i got one of those too, they are fantastic. safe to use all night, and if you put a waterproof cover on them, yes they can be used with that, you don't need to take them off the bed at all. they are a sod to wash, as they need space to dry afterwards, so protecting them is easier, plus, keeping them flat on the bed by tieing them down will make them last longer, as you're not folding them. I got mine after encountering one on the bed in a spare room I was staying in during 2010 in norfolk, the place was freezing, though there was an underblanket, i'd never seen that sort before. turned it on and left a fiver for the electric afterwards just in case it guzzled. now I dont think it did eat that much power, though it made my night a lot more bearable.

Most people spend 8 to 10 hours per day in bed. That's over a third of your life. So, use an automatic timer to turn off ALL your central heating about 1 hour before you plan to go to bed. The timer can also switch on your electric blanket as well so you have a toasty bed to retire to. You can even get king size blankets with different settings for each side to keep your partner happy. Your warm in bed, the rest of the house is cold, but, who cares ?.

Considering I'm using a blanket made in 1947 with vaccum tubes in the controller, yeah just no. This controller draws about an amp in operation because of the tube filaments. The overall addition to the electric bill is negligible. Electric blankets are a seasonal item and here in Texas, the bigger expense is HVAC. Especially during summer. Also, for those of you saying turn your central heat off, when outside temperatures drop below freezing for extended periods, you risk frozen pipes. Especially those pipes that run along outside walls. Never turn your heater below 55 to 60 degrees.

The best thing you can use for your general health, warmth and sound sleep is to use a lambswool underlay below the bed sheet, and a thick insulating cover (doona) on the top of the blankets. No heat can escape your body via the mattress and is retained to give you the deepest, most comfortable and serene sleep possible. From a one off purchase, this can be used for decades. Electric blankets cannot match the peace and comfort you get from retaining your own body heat.

A 150W blanket uses 0.150 kW, @ 24.44 pence per kWh = 3.6 pence per hour. A hot water bottle uses one kettle of nearly boiling water and costs about 4 pence to heat and will stay warm for 4 - 5 hours, warm blood will travel around your body so you don't really need to heat a large area of your body. Just a thought.

The calculation of power consumption isnt that simple for Electric blankets and throws because they use pulse width modulation to control the temperature. If you put a power meter or ammeter on an electric blanket you will see the power/amps turning on and off every second or so, depending on the heat setting selected. I have measured my electric throw over many winter weeks and can confidently say it cost about 1 pence an hour, or 0.04Kw per hour. I find the lowest setting keeps me warm enough when the room temperature is as low as 12 C.

read your owner's manuals carefully. most electric blankets warn you about either folding the blanket while on or lying on top of the blanket (or rolling it up as you toss n turn), as it might cause the wires to overheat.. A heating pad generally allows you to lay on top of it , with the heat then rising and being trapped by what ever type of cover you have over you, blanket, comforter etc.

Back in the early autumn I invested in Lidl's fleece duvet covers - £11.99 for the single sets - and also have many fleece type blankets to supplement. Son was sceptical but was so glad when he got first use - its like an 'instant cuddle' and so cosy! He got 2 sets but I only had one in my colour choice - so I will have to go back to cotton when I wash them - poor old mum! Prefer a covered hot water bottle - no cover? a towel will do - would feel a little nervous using electric blankets especially if you have an 'incontinent' elderly or child just in case any wiring was failing etc - so turn OFF before retiring for the night. But all and any tips to keep warm very welcome and essential at this time of year - whether because of high cost of energy or just need.

our electric blankets can be put in the washing machine . i was sceptical but its safe to do . i like flanelette sheets as well but they take quite long to dry hence fleece is perfect as it dries very quickly .

Can buy a laser non contact thermometer to find cold spots around your accommodation about twenty quid, you can get draughts from electric sockets, light switches and light fittings you can fit gaskets behind the cover without undoing any wiring, I piggy back another set of curtains at the windows on the curtains I already have that go to the floor they're good at absorbing noise too.

Yes if electric is say 27 pence per kilowatt hour, then a hundred watt( a tenth of a thousand watts) blanket on full will be 27 pence per 10 hours use, or 2.7 pence per hour.
A 60 watt blanket on full would be 16 pence per 10 hours use or 1.6 pence per hour.

True but most blankets aren't on full power all the time , they tend to cycle down for about 1/3 of the time , so your costs could be a bit lower.

Hello everyone. Have you read the new Net Zero Bill in Government? I've written to my MP and requested Bills be turned into audio so people who have been failed in school know what's going on. There are 9 Million Illiterate Adults in the UK because of State Education. Not only that the Bill and other Bills are so long people don't have time to read them. So if there is an audio Bill you can listen and multitask.

Electric BLANKETS are made to go ON TOP of you. ( Same for throws). A mattress heating pad is MADE to go UNDER the mattress pad, and hence UNDER you!! The LATTER is BETTER for sleeping!!!

Get a cheap Kill-A-Watt meter to test your actual electricity use. You'd be surprised how many devices are way off on actual current draw from what the box says.

The main benefit of an electric blanket on top of your mattress isn't so much the heat - it is more that it keeps the moisture out of your blankets.
So much nicer to go into a completely dry bed than back into your own sweat of last night!

Not an electric BLANKET, use an electric MATTRESS PAD. Far, far better.
And mine has a mine-theirs split and a timer, it can switch OFF in as little as 30 minutes after warming the bed. Only on cold, cold winter nights do I set the timer for 2 hours.
