    What about dry sanding off developer on aluminum parts after they have been pen. inspected?

    • @MaterialsScience2000
      @MaterialsScience2000  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Helen Reynoso You may always dry sand off any developer, as long as you do not damage your aluminium parts. It is better to wash the parts traditionally, but this is not mandatory if you dry sand them in any case.

      Answer to "I'm currently studying for a degree on Aviation Maintanence. One of my assignments is to perform the Dye Penetrant Inspection.. Should I have to buy my own Dye Penetrant or does the workshop provide it for me?": I would advise to buy the professional dye penetrant substances, they are not very expensive.

    The excess penetrant is then removed from the surface. The removal method is controlled by the type of penetrant used. Water-washable, solvent-removable, lipophilic post-emulsifiable, or hydrophilic post-emulsifiable are the common choices. Emulsifiers represent the highest sensitivity level, and chemically interact with the oily penetrant to make it removable with a water spray. When using solvent remover and lint-free cloth it is important to not spray the solvent on the test surface directly, because this can remove the penetrant from the flaws. If excess penetrant is not properly removed, once the developer is applied

      In this case, a penetrant with a UV fluorescent penetrant is used, which is later analysed under UV light.

    What chemical product do you use for that ??

    • @MaterialsScience2000
      @MaterialsScience2000  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Answer to "What chemical product do you use for that ??": You probably mean the penetrant. It is a special oil with a low surface tension and a dye. We have several suppliers - you can easily find them all on the Internet.

    Hi, why need to do pre cleaning the surface first?

    • @MaterialsScience2000
      @MaterialsScience2000  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Answer to "Hi, why need to do pre cleaning the surface first?": It is important that the defects are open to the surface. If you already have a clean surface, cleaning is not necessary. However, if the surface has covers of rust, paint or other substances, you must remove them first, otherwise the penetrant will not be able to reach the defects.

    • @MaterialsScience2000
      @MaterialsScience2000  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Answer to "Can it right aftet welding when piece are hot": Dye penetrant inspection as shown in the video only works at room temperature or, let us say, from 20 to about 50 °C. So if you weld a piece, you should let it cool down before testing it.

    Excellent video, but washing the part directly is actually not correct because it may wash out the pentrant soaked in a minor surface flaw, e.g. a micro crack from a weld surface. Instead wiping with a cleaner liquid/water is recommended.

    • @MaterialsScience2000

      Answer to "But washing parts must be done with Commercial Solvent not Water !": Not necessarily; it strongly depends on the penetrant. If the penetrant is designed to be washed off with water (it then contains an additional substance), it works well with water.

    So, that operator you have carrying out this inspection...... I'm going to say that they have almost never carried out a dye penetrant inspection before in their life. Why am I saying this? Well, first; lets look at their clothes. They have turned up in a light coloured (beige/cream) cardigan and it is clean. They have a spotless pair of jeans and shoes that have white bits on. Also, no gloves when testing. I know this is water washable but that shit literally penetrates everything it touches including your skin. Her hands are clean. Even under the nails! Second; They have carried out the test in a clean laboratory on white tables. Why doesn't it look like that table is used to slaughter Klingons on it? Seriously, that penetrant will turn all white tables pink and you will never scrub the pink out of it. Third and final point is a simple one. She is way too good looking to be an NDT inspector!
    However. It's a good video giving you the basic principles.

      Thanks for the detailed comment. It deserves a detailed answer. Well … yes, you are absolutely right. Retrospectively, we have made the mistake to denominate the second section "In practice". It should have been "Demonstration in the laboratory". If you wish to, you can watch our video on ultrasonic testing, which consists of three parts: the principle, the laboratory, and the (real) practice.
