Coke is just one of the products of the destructive distillation of coal (this is the same process that turns wood into charcoal by the way). The other product is what's called "town gas", which is a mixture of flammable gases such as methane, ethane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide. This gas mixture was historically used as a fuel for gas lights -- the most common of which were streetlights.
