    My one of my great grand uncles was a stoker onboard when this ship sunk, his name was John Sunderland, born in Wexford. It's amazing seeing the wreck after searching for information on him, and seeing all us descendants of the brave crew come together.

    Remembering William Phare, Leading Stoker. Married my grandmother on 18 May, returned to the Defence a couple of days later, and was on board when she sank. Very touching to see the footage, and feeling very privileged.

    The bell from the Hood was retrieved and cleaned up in time for the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland. It was on display in Portsmouth. You could walk right up to it and touch it. I did . Very emotional moment, and thanks to the Royal Navy for allowing people to do this.

    Strange feeling watching this. One of my relatives was on board this ship when it went down. His name was Harry Packer and he was my grandfather's brother.

    Thinking of Phillip John Norrish, (Johnny) of Tenby, who died on the ship that fateful day. He had just returned from leave and his family were shocked by his death. His brother, serving on HMS Collingwood in the same battle, never recovered from it. I have Johnnys medals and his death ‘penny’. In memory of all those young men, lost so tragically that day. Never forgotten.

    I was sorting through some old family photos today. I found a picture of my grandfather's brother Victor Charles Sheppard, a young Able Seaman. He too was lost on HMS Defence. It was a subject that I never heard anything about, not even my mother mentioned it (if indeed she was even aware of his loss). I only found out about this by researching my family history and cross referencing old records. So sad that he and so many others have faded from memory as real people and are just a name on a memorial.

    I'm surprised the bell hasn't been officially recovered and turned into a memorial. I think all the bells from the Jutland ships would give people and idea of just how big the losses were.

      That would mean digging deep into the wreckage, disturbing war graves is not a good idea.

    I was forward lookout on my ship once when because of the motion of the ship the nut holding the ships bell worked it's way lose and the bell fell skimming my back on it's way down. One half a second earlier and I wouldn't be here today! It put a huge gash in the metal floor. You just never know when the lord is going to take you home!

    I am really surprised that some grave robber hasn't gotten the plate at 04:30. Nothing seems sacred, even war graves, to these vermin.

      This ship is a war grave, and as such permission would be needed to remove anything from it. Such permission is rarely granted.

      There is one of them held at the Sea War Museum in Thyboron, also there is the Jutland Memorial Park there, great place to look at.

      @@FinnborgBraga I have always believed that bell is the heart of the ship and should never be taken or rung. Myth superstitious i guess but each to there own.

    Fine looking cruisers, but sadly obsolete from the day one of their existence. And, hms Defence, for some reason it dashed in front of the british battlecruiser line, forcing them to hold fire for a while and exposing itself to point blank fire from a strong german line. Futile loss of 900 brave sailors, with nothing gained by it. It would have served much more of a purpose to let the Beatty`s Splendid cats engage the german battle line.

  • @Fricasso79
    @Fricasso79 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Probably the most pointless loss of the whole battle, they needn't have died at all if not for reckless leadership.
