- The choroid plexus is a complex network of blood vessels in the brain. It is lined by specialized cells that perform various functions, such as production of cerebrospinal fluid. It also serves as a barrier to prevent the entry of harmful substances from the blood into the central nervous system. Choroid plexus plays a role in recovery of brain function following trauma or stroke, and in the pathophysiology of neurodegenerative and autoimmune CNS diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
Nicole Zürcher, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, a faculty member at the Martinos Center and the Director of Human Imaging in the Chemical Neuroscience Program. She has a background in biology, behavioral and social neuroscience, and neuroimaging. Dr. Zürcher uses magnetic resonance (MR) and simultaneous positron emission tomography (PET)-MRI to study brain function and dysfunction in health and disease with an emphasis on neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders. Her main disease focus is on autism spectrum disorder and related conditions.
In this talk she discusses abnormalities in choroid plexus in individuals with autism that have been observed in her lab using Simultaneous PET-MR brain imaging.
🎥 This talk was part of Synchrony 2023 Online Symposium - 'From Bench to Biopharma', organised by the The BRAIN Foundation

The BRAIN Foundation brainfoundatio... is a 501c(3) non-profit. The founders of BRAIN envision a world where every child and adult on the autism spectrum is healthy, participates fully in education and employment, and has a better quality of life. It aims to catalyze research that results in evidence-based interventions for the disabilities associated with autism, and also results in better medical standard of care. To accomplish this, it funds impactful research through #philanthropy and our network of partners in the venture, corporate, and grassroots community.
